At which point do we look to next season?

We are not out of the woods..

last saturday was an epic backs to the wall job, but should have been an easy 3 points, take that in mind..

We somehow manage to struggle with the easy jobs, let alone the hard ones.

Surely it shows the opposite? Ragged them all over, then still managed to only be 1-0 playing with 9 men.

We should be putting in our best performances till we are safe in the knowledge that we aren't making the top 6 or being relegated. The rebuilding should have started after we came down from the Premier league the first time, but we stuck with the old guard too long and here we are, we can't spend big because the owners don't have the money , imo they waited to complete the deal in January in the belief that we were going up and the prem money would bank roll us, we blew a chance in the play off final and here we are now in a poor championship league where anyone can beat anyone, we're out of the cup, most teams are playing 3 times a week so we can't use that as an excuse and we have some good players ( maybe new lads coming in) and with decent coaching we can improve, but we shouldn't just give in

The next 7 months should be the seen as a long preseason , 2 windows to trim and rebuild the squad based on a new budget , still with sights on challenging next year .

I'd like to think theres a team sheet and squad sheet somewhere for the 26/27 season with names of those staying and already looking for those needed to be brought in following some inevitable releases ans sales .

I'd love us to win every game and make the playoffs of course , but think focusing there will just be a distraction to the job in hand of assembling a capable squad for next season.

I suppose this topic has been breached in other threads without perhaps making it the centrepiece.

So my question would be, at which point do we concede defeat on the current season and look to the next one? And how does this impact your actions?

I think 2 wins in the next two give you some belief. But I’m still not sure how that changes things in many cases.

Keeper - we’ll probably stay as we are. Personally I’d like to have seen Faxon vs Mansfield. I’d also have considered Patterson on loan and get Cooper fixed up. For now we’ll probably make do and offload Davies in the summer.

Defence - With eyes on next season I’d like to see Sasnauskas and Sachdev sent on loan to see if they could be viable squad options next season. For the first team, IF we could get a reasonable deal, then I’d be tempted to get a centre back in and they would be my token moderate effort to have a bit of a play off dart. I’d be expecting Mee and Bindon to be off the books by the summer and for Wilder to try and offload McGuinness. He’ll be out for centre backs in the summer. Bindon or Souttar may be options depending on finance. I’d probably keep Burrows for now l, long contract, no rush to sell, unless daft money gets waved.

Midfield - we are learning to live without Hamer. I’d take someone like Rothwell on loan and pocket the fee for Hamer and the wage saving. Rothwell can play deeper which would probably be more useful.

Forwards - Getting Bamford potentially sets us up for next season and Cannon seems to play better off a presence. Ideally Marsh and Oné come into the picture next season after game time on loan. Campbell needs to shake himself then he remains an option. You’ve always got O’Hare as a 10 too. Not against Ings moving on or staying if fit for the 4th striker role though don’t know his wages of course.

So for me, perhaps Boly on loan and Rothwell also but Gus out the door and a number of younger players to gain experience on loan.

Much beyond that I’d be surprised.

What would you do?
I don’t want to admit it, but I think the club has already made that decision within. We’ve obviously got enough talent to keep us away from the trap door of relegation, so the hierarchy have already written this season off…So not expecting any significant incomings this JTW.
But it’s a bit different for us fans, we need the hope (regardless of reality) to get us through this long up and down season. The dwindling thought that we might gatecrash the playoffs needs to be kept alive…As mid table apathy kills any season stone dead.

A lot are saying that there are too many teams between us and the play offs, and i get that, but we also need to play them (mostly).

Teams between us and Top 6...

Southampton (away)
Swansea (home)
Leicester - played twice (6pts)
Birmingham (away)
QPR (away)
Bristol City (away)
Derby (away)
Wrexham (home)
Watford (away)
Stoke - played twice (6pts)

For arguments sake, lets say we have beaten Oxford in our game-in-hand.

That then puts us behind the teams as follows:

Southampton (above them +2)
Swansea (-1)
Leicester (-3)
Birmingham (-3)
QPR (-5)
Bristol City (-5)
Derby (-6)
Wrexham (-6)
Watford (-6)
Stoke - (-6)

Meaning that, if we beat all of those teams (i know we wont) and just match their results in the other games, the most we can be behind any of them is 3pts. The definition of 6-pointers!

I think we'll finish 6th to 9th.
