Ross Barkley

Why would wilder inquire to loan a injured player to come and be on the treatment table.
Because he might be a very good player who is available to come in on loan.
That take a loan spot up when he could loan a player ready to play don’t get it
Are we in desperate need of players who are ready to play? Our squad is huge, and the one position we were light in has already been filled.

I'd be up for Barkley on the proviso that he's fit but just out the picture at Villa. They're doing well at the moment and it'll be tough to force himself in.

If he's injured then no but if not, he'll bring more to the table than bloody Matos or biscuit legs Davies, as good as he is, is never fit enough to contribute.

Why would you even consider it even Villas manager says he could be out for 12 weeks

Is Ross dating another Wilder daughter 🧒 can’t think why else 🤔

We saw this with Holding last season.

Wilder typically likes to see a player play a couple of games in the U21s, building up their minutes... and then make a couple of first team cameos before they're trusted to start.

By that stage, it's March and you've already lost half a dozen games out of a short loan.

His approach to building up fitness is correct, but it makes signing an injured / rusty player a bit of a waste of time...
Particularly this season where we need to be almost perfect (from now) to get top six.

Barkley's wages will be astronomical and it'll probably come with a loan fee.
I'd rather we looked at a permanent option, even if the quality isn't as high as Barkley's, but that can help us in future seasons.

A good market to look at would be players with six months left on their deals.

The squad is going to be rationalised substantially in the summer as parachute payments run out. I think we’ll be unlikely to sign permanents in Jan who can actively contribute to the first team this season, that quality will be delivered by loan IMHO.

Know what you mean but you’ll find that market of player demands very high wages…..well above their real worth.
Their agents use the argument that the transfer fee was very low or nil…..then they feel it’s their right to demand a high wage.

At least with loans we’re only committed to a high wage for 6 months whereas signing someone who’s contract has almost ran out
Then SUFC are forced to commit to a high wage for 3 years or so.

If we fail to get promoted our annual Sky money reduces from 35 million to about 7 million.
That’s a huge decrease in income, so we need to sell 2 or 3 of our better players and we won’t be able to offer new signings attractive wages anymore.

You sometimes hear….arent our owners ambitious and wealthy? Surely we should be keeping our better players
But having rich owners outside the PL doesn’t mean spend what you want….there are still FFP rules which restrict and control spending and salary offers.

I suppose the difference being that this thread isn’t necessarily about Ross Barkley in particular, despite bearing his name. It’s more about overall strategy to squad-building.

I hate it when you try to type "Thread: overall strategy to squad-building" and it autocorrects to "Ross Barkley". It happened to me twice yesterday.

We've signed Bamford though Rods
