Seems likely that Jags will play tonight.

I think this will make him the first home-grown Blade to play for England in a world cup finals. Ted Burgin was in the squad in 1954 and Hodgy in 1958 and 1962 but neither played.

Anybody i've missed.

Has any United player played in World cup whilst still with us (even if not home grown). Currie's England didn't qualify. hagan didn't get the caps as his peak period was during the war years.

Was just going to say that Trig, Kelly was overlooked for Bonner in '94, Suffo went to one but don't think he played.

Suffo did play in 2002 but he'd signed permanently for Numancia (After going on loan there following the Battle of Bramall Lane) by the time the cup started

he may have played in the Euro championships but i think that was before we signed him. I don't think he played in a world cup or at least while he was with us. Dellas?

Flo played for Norway in the 1994 World Cup while he was with us.

He did, in 1994, Trig Jnr (TE) and I were there. He played in all 3 group games. All 4 teams finished on four points and Norway ended up bottom on goals scored, with just one goal.

Everton released Jags when he was 15 and he came to us when Stewart White (David White's dad) was in charge of bringing in youth players to the club

Warnock doing his usual historical revisionism with the Jags story, from my memory of the period Warnock continued to play Jags in midfield for the vast majority of his time with us despite the general opinion from fans I spoke to that he would be better suited to centre back.

Well aye. The 4 goal mauling we had at Wigan when Jags was relatively new to the role was largely put down to his lack of strength. The irony being, a few years later, Warnock decided to use Jag's strength at right back against Wigan which helped us toward relegation.

A more purist footballing manager than Warnock wouldn't have used him in midfield half as much, although in his defence, we did get promoted with him there. But Jags did have a few shockers along the way.

Suffo played in Cameroon's first game in 2002 (as sub) when he was still on United 's books. He signed permanently for Numancia before the second game.

He and Flo are thus the only two United players to play in a WC finals. Nilsen (94), Kelly (94), Hodgkinson (58 and 62) and Burgin (54) were in squads but didn't play.

Off the top of my head. United players who have played in the WC whilst not with United.

David Carney - Australia 2010
Jan Fjortoft - Norway 1994
Len Allchurch - Wales 1958
Bruce Rioch - Scotland 1978
Martin Peters - England 1966, 1970
Jimmy Johnstone - Scotland 1974
Peter Withe - England 1982
Phil Thompson - England 1982
Paul Parker - England 1990
Paul Hall - Jamaica 1998
David Kelly - Ireland 1994
Stuart McCall - Scotland 1990

There are probably more....

Right you are.

Sorry, Withe was in the squad in 82, but didn't play, as was Bobby Campbell for NI that year.

I thought Jags played well last night. Got some good blocks in and saved a goal with that header off the line. Just wish he would be a bit more commanding and positive rather than boring sideway passes to Gerard, he's better that that.

Why did the Brazilian Marcelo never get to any of the world cups?

Because he was shit?

And Portuguese, wasn't he?

Portuguese parents, born in Brazil, I guess he could have played for either Country if they'd wanted him.

He wasn't shit at all, he had a very respectable better than one-in-three record for us which is not bad at all for a striker adjusting to a new league. He wasn't most people's idea of a Brazilian striker though - He had a poor first touch but as seen in the video above it was sometimes a help, his miscontrol invited the Coventry defender to commit and dive in allowing Marcelo to go past him.
