How much should we expect them to figure next season? We have added some steady, but maybe unspectacular signings so far. Will Clough be looking for the likes of Dimaio, De Girolamo, Calvert-Lewin, Reed and Khan to add flair and skill?

I think they'll get their chance.

As much as I think De Girolamo has been massively over hyped, I think he needs to start stepping up. The others will get chances at some point.

I am sure they will get some game time in johnstones paint or the league cup early rounds and they fully deserve it after the Rotherham game. I also expect some 1 or 3 month loans to league 2 clubs. I really cant see too many league starts though unless there are major injuries. If we are up by March they can have a few games :-)

If they are good enough they will get their chance.

If Wallace signs, he seems like the sort that injures easily (a lot of Tranmere fans seem to think he's a 20 game a season player) so I'd have thought opportunities will be there for the youngsters. The real question I guess is whether both Doyle and McGinn will be kept on, given how crowded the middle of midfield is starting to look. I suspect the latter will be sold.

There should come a point in time when the younger players develop their game skills, where. hopefully they equal or out perform the guys in the team. A bit of a balancing act but, when /if that situation arises, I trust the manager to play them.

From afar it seems that we have a good crop of young lads, eager to step up. I believe they are in the right place.

Viewed from afar that would seem to match how things progressed at Derby. I just hope our lads are up to the task. At the moment I'd suggest it's a gamble unless we sign a couple more proven attacking players.

Absolutely. A point lost on many Bladey, Bladey Blades.

It's up to any player to show the manager why he should play, not for the manager to give "Young Joe / Jordan / Jason / Juan / Jimmy..." a 'chance' whether they've earned it or not. We're Sheffield United, not a fucking crèche!

Cloughy says there is intererst in loaning out Long, but who to?

Would a League 2 club offer the right standard?

If he went to a League 1 club would that be right? I could see him saving a penalty or making a mitake that puts someone else into second or 6th place on the last day of the season.

New professionals May 2014.jpg

These are the new pros:

Left to right: (Travis Binnion), Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Joel Coustrain, (John Dungworth), Otis Khan, CJ Hamilton, Ben Whiteman, Connor Dimaio, Kyle Scarisbrick, Louis Reed, Julian Banton, Diego De Girolamo, Jason Paling, (Jamie Annerson)

We should definitely look to improve our goal scoring. Come August, we may be missing the significant attacking contributions of Brayford, Coady and Maguire, so other players have to step up, or be signed.

Off topic mate , but have you had the chance to get to any of the rugby , both the young and test stuff thats going on down your neck of the woods , cant wait for England to stuff the Paddies at the w-end .

Hi Dublin, IMO England were unfortunate to lose. They were well up for it and I wouldn't be surprised if thy win the next one. The thing spoiling such an enthralling game for me was the attitude of a small section in the crowd who bood. the English at every opportunity.
This is something that has crept into the game recently and it spoils the game. the papers seem quite biased in favour of th A.Bs. Nothing new there but little credit is being given to England, who I MO are a much improved side.
I will be a fireside viewer. Saturday. The game is in the cold South island. Best wishes

Agree Sirius mate , that booing business seems to be creeping in all over , however its nice to see in Ireland , and the UK people are given the respect they deserve , thought England played well and deserved more from the game but it looks good with the world cup coming up , the youngsters are playing well in your neck of woods also , but I have to stay up till nearly 3 to finish watching them , it was great to see them beat the Aussies like they did last week , hopefully once they beat Ireland will set them up for the All Blacks once they beat S.A .
Did'nt think they did cold weather down there buddy .
All the best D .

Got to differ with you on that booing point.

I was in Clonmel early February watching the game against the French in a bar and the Irish contingent booed the England continuously and the roar when the French sealed it was deafening.

I spend a lot of time in Ireland as I have a big interest in Greyhound Racing and have many Irish friends but to go of like that especially against the French really pissed me off.

I can speak from experience that they do do cold in NZ - the second test is in Dunedin at the bottom of the South Island; the next land southwards is Antarctica so the wind blowing in off the Southern Ocean can be a bit chilly!

The rugby should be OK though as since Carisbrook (aka House of Pain) closed they've moved to an enclosed stadium which is a bit nuts. I was surprised how well England played in that first test but I think the ABs underestimated them. The second test is set up nicely but it's a shame that England will drop Freddy Burns for Owen Farrell.

Back on topic: I think Clough has shown enough over the past 9 months that he's more than willing to put the youngsters in the squad if they meet his standards. I'd expect to see one or two in the matchday 18 on a regular basis. I'd also not be surprised to see some of them out on loan: York and Burton being likely destinations.

I wonder if a loan to Tranmere would have been used to help sign Wallace. They have lost that Fon Williams.

A B E anybody but England , they see it as a way back at the old enemy ,
I've had it and still get it to various degrees now , best thing to do next time your over is just ignore it ,
most people don't mean anything by it , and 9 times out of 10 it's just a slagging , you will get the odd tool who means it and will try to give you hassle , rise above it brother .
Had a few good nights at Shelbourne park , good food , good time , but very few winners .

Yes you are probably right there fella.

Ive met a lot more decent people over there than bad.

I would expect both Doyle and McGinn mto be moved on in January, if not before, now that NC has had the opportunity to bring in some players that he has chosen.
McGinn has failed to make an impression at this level and Doyle is now too slow and immobile to be effective.

Doyle will definitely stay this season and Mcginn may move on..Doyle did well once Clough came in and I think he has a lot to offer this season, both on and off the pitch.

Off the pitch maybe, I wouldn't question that. But on the pitch I don't think so. His improvement under NC was marginal , he couldn't possibly have got worse and he was still the weak link in the team right to the end. He can no longer keep up with play.

He's not been able to 'keep up with play' with the better players in L1 since we came down.
I think Clough recognised this but also saw qualities in the bloke that he brought to the fore.
I'm not saying he'll play every game and I'm happy that Nigel had brough a lot more 'steel' to the club, but I think he'll play his part and I hope he's around to see us get promoted!!!

UTB!

P.s-I've been a critic of the bloke previously also...but I'd take exception that he improved 'marginally' under Nigel..he had some great games!

Each to their own eh!?

Don't want to go over old ground esablade and i take your points on board regarding Doyle, but for me,if we want automatic promotion,i would like to think Doyle won't be playing much,we now have Basham and Wallace who are both younger and a bit more mobile than Doyle from what i have seen of them(which isn't much admittedly)and i'd like to think one of these will step upto the plate.

Doyle maybe able to come on when we are winning by 1 or 2 goals just to keep it tight but thats about it,very good pro,but as we now have plenty of leaders,Doyle isn't going to be needed as much as you think next year.

HEY!

"We're all in it together.".I do agree...but Doyle will be here, pushing the team on (and hopefully celebrating) at the end of next season!
As I said, I'm not the bloke's biggest fan but IMO he did well since Nigel came in.

UTB!
