The Blades failed to make it five victories on the bounce and had to settle for a point against lowly Norwich at Bramall Lane. A game lacking in quality throughout saw both teams routinely give possession away and the Canaries did have spells in the game where they created opportunities. Danny Ings missed two great opportunities to score before he did finally net after good work from Seriki and Chong. However, despite not looking under any pressure, poor defending from Tanganga and Soumare saw the Blades concede a leveller. After this both sides could have won it and in the end the final chance went the way of the visitors but Forson missed a one on one after he had the freedom of Bramall Lane, with Michael Cooper making the late save to preserve a point. The final stages of the game saw United look ragged and the number of changes meant it was always going to be difficult to find the same level of consistency and cohesion that they have in previous games.

Wilder had been forced into a wholesale reshuffle. There were 8 changes with a combination of illness, injury and rotation with 3 games inside a week yet again. There was no place in the match day squad for McGuiness, Peck, Riedewald and McCallum. There was a completely new midfield with Chong, Arblaster, Soumare and O'Hare; new front two with Cannon and Ings starting. Bindon also started. There were places on the bench for Matos, Zatterstrom, Curtis and One; joining Hamer, Brooks, Campbell and Bamford. Norwich also had injuries and suspensions at the back and were forced into shuffling their own pack but the dangerous Josh Sargent started up front. Former Blade Anis Slimane was on the bench for the Canaries.

The game began with United starting brightly and Seriki’s good work down the right saw the ball pulled back for Cannon but it was blocked by a defender. At the other end Wright had an effort not far wide and Norwich then started to have a spell in the game as the issues that plagued United to start the season in midfield saw them played through on more than one occasion. After Seriki failed to clear, the ball came across from the byline and Schwartau was denied by Cooper and then Ings on the line did well to clear the overhead kick from Sargent. United continued to lack the crispness of previous games, not surprising considering the number of changes, but Chong was looking lively down the right-hand side.

Medic was booked for bringing down Seriki and Burrows free kick was tipped over before Seriki was cautioned for bringing his man down after losing possession. However, when he was upended again in a more advanced position, somehow referee Smith decided to keep his card away this time. The inconsistency of the referee had frustrated much of the home crowd for a number of odd decisions.

United should have taken the lead when Burrows corner was missed completely by the keeper but Ings somehow headed over with the goal at his mercy. Just before half time Ings then volleyed horrible off target after more good work from Chong down the right. Sargent picked up a knock and had to come off – with Forson coming on – it seemed like he was concussed meaning Norwich could use an additional substitute if required.

The second half saw McLean replaced by Marcondes with another injury blow for the beleaguered Canaries. United came out of the traps quickly and Burrows sent a great low cross over that just evaded Cannon and Chong at the back post. Seriki was brought down by Springett leading to another yellow card. Burrows sent over another dangerous ball, from the dead ball but Ings diverted header went wide. It was another great opportunity for the former England man. However, it was not long after when he finally got his first United goal. Seriki’s ball down the line was inch perfect for Chong and the winger skilfully found space as he beat his man before sending over an inch perfect cross and INGS could not miss this one from only a few yards!

Arblaster came off just before the hour, as did Chong, who had seemingly picked up a knock – with Hamer and Brooks coming on. Mundle Smith and Chrisene replaced Springett and Schwartau for the visitors. On 65 minutes out of nowhere, Norwich – who had created little in the 2nd half – were level. Hamer had tried a flick as United attacked but City broke and as the ball came over and Tanganga made a hash of clearing the ball. Makama pounced and sent it goalwards and SOUMARE (OG) could only bundle it into his own net. It was a messy goal to concede but gave the visitors new life.

United were now struggling to find any momentum and two careless passes from the hapless Soumare summed up his night. However, Burrows seemed to be pulled down near the Kop as he looked to go past his man but Smith waved it away. Matos and Bamford replaced O’Hare and Cannon – with Hamer moving down the left-hand side. The game now was incredibly scrappy. Brooks looked threat down the right and got past his man twice before winning a corner and having another cross blocked. However, City were looking as likely as the ball came over and United struggled to smuggle it clear. Slimane came on for Wright – returning to Bramall Lane and then Jurasek was introduced for Makama with less than 10 minutes to go -the 6th sub for City!

Hamer had a powerful shot turned round by Kovacevic and Bamford headed over as the Blades tried to find a late winner. The game ticked into 6 minutes of stoppage time and United were doing more of the attacking now but Campbell hooked over and Soumare was then cautioned for a cynical pull back. The Blades looked to return it into the box, Seriki slipped and Forson was suddenly in the clear but with a lot of time to think about it, he rather scuffed his shot and Cooper turned it round the post to deny City a winner.

United – It’s hard to be too critical really. The performance was a messy one but with 8 changes and so many key men out injured/ill/rotated around – it was always going to be hard for us to replicate the excellent form of the winning run. We had the heart of our midfield taken out and changed our whole front 6. We also were missing Mee and McGuinness. So, it was a patched-up team and those that come in on the whole showed why they have not been playing really. I felt Chong did ok but overall too many were off their game and it was really scrappy. We never had control of the game against a poor Norwich side. Still for all the concerns over lack of retention of the ball and our openness in midfield and indeed across the field, we still had enough chances to win the game really. Ings missed 2 or 3 really good one and we had a few other good moments where we made the wrong choice. Still, they also had one off the line and Cooper made a few good saves and then a brilliant one to deny them the best chance of the whole second half right at the end. In the end, a point was about right.

Despite the patched-up team – it seemed we may do enough and after the break had 2 or 3 good chances even before the goal. We seemed like we had upped it and put the pressure on and they started to wilt. I felt the leveller came out of nothing really and until they scored, not sure they really threatened up the goal. It was such an avoidable goal – Tanganga has to clear before and then Soumare makes an absolute mess of it. We also had the ball at the other end and Hamer tries a daft flick.

After this it was became a bit of a mess really and they had more of the ball. We ended up with Soumare and Matos in midfield and they were abysmal with poor touches, not closing them down and not protecting the defence. I was disappointed Hamer did not get on the ball and Campbell barely touched it. Until we had a late few moments – mostly through positivity of Brooks, I thought we became ragged and disjointed and the last chance for them summed up the way we played for much of the night – it was all a bit s**t or bust and Seriki’s error should have ended up with them winning the game.

In the end, a draw was a relief weirdly when we are playing a team 2nd bottom but that is how the game kind of went. We easily could have lost it – but we could have won it too for long spells. Our XH was much higher than them but they had more possession and Cooper made more saves. So, a draw was the right result. Neither team really did enough or showed enough quality to win a poor game.

It does show that there are a number who are not at the level of those that they replaced – however some of the senior players, Ings, O’Hare, Burrows, Tanganga and those that came on (Hamer/Campbell) did not really do enough either. I felt that our shape was a bit of a mess and that it was too big of an ask for Arblaster to come in – when Soumare was so bad too. Hopefully we can get a few back – but sounds like Peck may be out for a few weeks whilst the others were a sick bug. The midfield worries me as those that came in looked way out of their depth (Arblaster still coming back of course so not really aimed at him) and we did not get much out of Ings and Cannon – even though Ings scored. Just one of those games – with so many changes – you take he point and move on. As I say, hope a few are back for Friday but today has shown we do need reinforcements and a number will be moved out as they are not up to the level we need. Positives were the return of Arblaster, Chong and Brooks. West Brom are struggling so hopefully we can start well and keep the unbeaten run going but we now have 3 of next 4 away so might be a bit trickier- with the fitness issues also over a number of players.

Ratings:

Cooper 7/10 – He made two decent saves first half – one from the ball pulled back – when they had the overhead kick after. Then saved a low shot to his right. His distribution was poor with some strange kicks that just gave them the ball back. At the end, he makes a vital save to preserve us a point. It was a poor finish – but he did position himself well. Reminded me of Henderson v Norwich in the Championship promotion season.

Seriki 5/10 – Really weird game. Some positive moments but some awful mistakes and decisions too. He got 2 Norwich players booked and should have been 3 with strong runs and nearly set up a few goals with some good balls in. He also set up Chong. Showed lots of energy again but he also made a number of poor mistakes and gave it away a lot. The chance first half came when he dithered near the byline I think and we saw this a few times. He does get fouled a lot but goes to floor a lot too and looks for free kicks too much (I think he dives at times I am sad to say also). The chance at the end came form his mistake of course.

Burrows 5/10 – Like Seriki – some good moments but inconsistent. Sent over 2 or 3 great crosses from set plays and general play – the cross 2nd half was begging to be converted. He too thought was guilty of some bad touches and mis controls. He was not as secure in possession and it came off him way too much. He lost a few 50/50’s on half way that saw them break too. Not at the level he was last season and expect McCallum back Friday – if recovered from his illness.

Bindon 5/10 – Becoming a theme of these marks. Some decent stuff, where he won a few tackles and stepped out and neat and tidy enough. However, he also got muscled out of it too easily -the chance early on when he got rolled round and towards the end he lost 3 or 4 headers on the bounce and played some aimless balls. He did ok but I am not sure he is the answer long term and expect him to go back in January – if Mee and McGuinness are back and fit.

Tanganga 3.5/10 – Had a poor night. Been playing well but tonight he ended up looking at full stretch too much. He took too many touches and could have cleared the ball a few times but dithered and this happened on the goal. He just was too lackadaisical in everything and kind of set the tone but did not get much protection at all from in front but still has to cut out the errors.

Soumare 2/10 – Nightmare. Hard to watch a player look so badly out of his depth. He scored an own goal and got booked but it was more his general play. Always in the wrong position – lost his man routinely and completely off the pace. He seemed to have no concept of where he needed to be. We had a big gap where he should have been. On the ball his passing was mostly awful and the ball kept bouncing off him. Did not win any tackles and just looked woefully out of his depth. Had a few ok games earlier in the season but I was never totally convinced and the last 3 or 4 cameos, he has struggled. Tonight, he was absolutely hopeless. He could not have done much worse really and how he survived being subbed – I do not know – maybe the lack of options? Seen enough of him overall to say that he will leave in January – he looked like Coulibaly tonight in terms of how he had no concept of where to play and meant we had no shape at all and Norwich passed through us. The own goal wasn’t unlucky either – he kicks it the wrong way. Yes, it was driven across but a good player adjusts his body and clears.

Arblaster 4.5/10 – Did ok to start with and just kept it simply but struggled to keep up with the pace. As the game went on, he started to struggle to keep up with runners coming through and we lost midfield completely. He moved it on neat enough but he never really came out of the half turn – like he used to and other than one decent ball to Ings, he struggled I felt to get in the game. It is his first game though and you know it will take him some time but he looks a long way off ready being able to play regularly on that evidence. I would not have started him – he has had no u21 minutes (one behind closed doors game – is that it?) but suppose medical team know more than me! I barely noticed him for long spells so despite him being back in his first game – I can only mark what I see. I think he was a great player (and hope he can get back to that) for us – but will need time. We had no control of midfield and the opponents went through this area too easily.

O’Hare 4.5/10 – Disappointing overall. Ball kept bouncing off him and never kept it. We ended up tossing it away too often. Needed him to help drive us up the pitch but it never really happened. I thought that he faded badly and was not shocked when he went off.

Chong 7/10 – Our most impressive outfield starter. Began with a few runs and linked up with Seriki but then overplayed a few passes. Had one shot wide and sent another decent cross in. Some loose touches but continued to be lively and set up the goal with a great piece of skill and calm/composed ball in.

Cannon 4/10 – Largely ineffective. Began pressing and harrying. He ran the channels also but I thought that he was slow to react to things too. He had one chance from Seriki’s shot but hit a defender. He then also miskicked another – he also then should have got on the end of Burrows ball second half. Does not seem to anticipate things.

Ings 5/10 – He gets 5 for scoring and clearing one off the line. He might have been a 3/10 if it had not been for these moments! He missed an absolute sitter and then blasted another off target, missed another good chance from the free kick when he glanced wide and then shanked another. He looked a shadow of the player I remembered and so slow. He is a player than if we had only signed to January, you would not keep him. He looks probably the least dangerous of our strikers here. Did score I suppose but a big drop off from Bamford and Campbell tonight.

Subs -

Hamer 4.5/10 – Wanted a lot more. Showed flashes. He had one shot driven at the keeper but he had a number of opportunities to play us in but overhit it or telegraphed it. His daft flick set them on the break too. We needed him to really show his quality and find a moment but did not happen.

Brooks 7/10 – Along with Chong, our next best player and only played 30 minutes! He looked dangerous and continued to go at his man. He beat him a few times and sent over some decent crosses. Been very direct and needs to keep this up. I was disappointed he was taken out – he needs games now – he is a young lad so should be fit enough to keep playing – especially when we had so many other changes?

Bamford 6/10 – Looked the best forward of the lot. Ball at least stuck to him; he linked up and gave us an outlet.

Matos 3/10 – Another that showed he is not good enough. Won a few tackles but then normally gave it straight back. Technically he is horrific with passes never weighted properly -either hit too hard or too soft. He seems to just run around like a headless chicken and with him and Soumare – we did not have a midfield to end the game. No discipline or football brain at all. Looks a dreadful signing that hopefully we can move on but mind boggling our scouts thought he was worth signing and for decent money too.

Campbell – Barely touched the ball when he came on and looked off the pace till he hooked one over the bar late on.

Manager: Wilder 5/10 – Harsh as many of changes may have been enforced but I also think he should have left some of those that were fit (Hamer/Brooks and one of Campbell/Bamford) in the starting line up as we ended up with too many new players and looked like a team simply thrown together. He probably had no choice but then many of the changes/subs during the game seemed a bit desperate and we ended up with players moving around positions and had no structure/shape at all. After they scored, they changes he made did not really help (apart from Brooks) and he did not change the formation to give us a foothold in midfield (play three in there for a while – or drop a striker back to help us see more of the ball). It seemed a bit ‘lets just chuck him on and hope for the best.’ I think it might be positive in that there are a number that now will probably leave in January – as showed they are not up to it- as harsh as that sounds.

Norwich – I thought they might be right around the playoffs. I liked the signings they made and also thought with Sargent staying this would mean they would be a contender – not for the top two – but playoffs for sure. They had pulled off quite a coup in getting Liam Manning from Bristol City and saw no reason why he would not be a success – he knew the division, a Norwich fan and sure him having an immediate effect. It never worked and was a bit of a disaster and he was eventually sacked. Clement was a bit of a left field appointment and by all account’s performances have improved and have picked up some points and started to score goals again. There is a fair bit of talent in the side and like with us, should have been nowhere near the bottom but have not quite had the recovery we have had. They remain in a fair bit of trouble but I sense they may pull away at some point but need to start putting some consistent results together.

Tonight, at times you could see why they were near the bottom and defensively some of the marking/mistakes should have yielded more goals for us but they stuck in the game and had moments. They had chances both halves and after we scored, stayed in the game and got level. They could have won it and definitely deserved a point. They did pick up more injuries to key men but I think Clement may get some results soon – they have enough in the squad that should see them higher than certain teams.

Opponent Man of the Match – Makama was a handful and helped set up the goal but number 7 Mattson looked a decent player and the stand out midfielder on the park.

Opponent Weak link – Sargent was ineffective before he went off but had one effort but the left back, Springett, was awful and struggled all game before he was taken off. Chong and Brooks had the beating of him and his replacement all night.

Referee / Officials – Josh Smith. Awful. Inconsistent with everything he did. At times tried to let it flow- then became fussy. Booked players for offences that were not as bad as some that escaped yellow cards. Gave some perplexing decisions both ways. Thought we had a number of fouls he did not spot but then missed Tanganga’s blatant hand ball. Burrows looked to have a decent shout for a penalty too? He just seemed to want to be the star of the show but he made so many wrong calls – both ways.

Crowd- Three thousand down from the weekend which was not a surprise being an evening, poor weather and a night match just before Xmas. Crowd were quiet for long spells but the stop start nature due to two poor side and a bad referee did not help and the only noise came from frustration. Smallest Norwich following at the Lane for a long time – maybe 500 or so but they did their best to support their team.

Thought Bindon was our best player, didn't do much more than the basics but that's all that was needed. Chong had a couple of moments but was no better than the others who got a 5 out of 10.

Good effort getting this done so quickly! Yeah agree in the most part, thought O'Hare actually improved in the 2nd half, first half he was looking a bit weak but still grafting.

Soumare’s pass completion rate was 89%. He doesn’t have the composure to help us control a game from midfield and he didn’t provide much of a screen for the back four but your review of him is a bit over the top.

Overall agree with your review of the game though. We weren’t great but did enough to win. Norwich had a spell from the 5th to the 25th minute but after that they didn’t have another shot until after they’d equalized. I think they only had two shots second half. We were sloppy and far from our best but they really didn’t lay a glove on us outside that short period.

It felt like we got out jail because of the chance at the end.

Bindon passing was really poor. He constantly went back to Cooper too. He was ok but he lost 3 or 4 headers late on and got lucky twice when he got put muscled. 1st when they broke and same nearer the end. He tried to bring his man down both times.

He was not awful but very ordinary. Problem was others were worse!

Riley Roberts gave him 1/10 for the Pinch!

I thought he was abysmal. He was never in the right place, never picked up a man and cant recall a single forwards pass.

The own goal also cost us 2 points. It's not unlucky. There are no forwards near him either. He kicks it with the wrong foot, the wrong way into his own net. The cynical booking was awful too as he grabs his man with a diving pull back!

I think 2/10 was generous.

You said his passing was “mostly awful” which simply isn’t true. Criticize him for stuff he does do badly by all means.

89% doesn't really tell the story. He played some basic sideways and backwards balls. He did give it away or play some poor balls.

He fired a few at people which might count as an accurate pass in his stats but the weight of quite a few passes meant his recipient quickly lost it. Stats sometimes can be misleading I believe.

You have to work pretty hard to make 89% pass success rate look bad. He didn’t do anything amazing with it but he used the ball ok.

Stats can be misleading in all sorts of ways but they can also be a useful counterbalance to totally subjective opinions, which are often even more misleading.

I thought Chong was really good. It seems bizarre that Wilder brought in so many players but had Hamer and Brookes on the bench. Wilder was shouting abuse at the linesman, but it was Wilder who picked a completely disoriented team.

Can’t disagree with any of that. Let’s hope they get to the chemists, and we can put out something approximating a first 11 on Friday. Win then and this becomes a good point dug out under difficult circumstances

Spot on with the report DB but what do you expect with eight changes Norwich was not not the worst side I’ve seen this and will finish mid table

I'd hoped for more from Soumare. On occasions he looks very good with athleticism and ability on the ball, but then he frustrates by being too erratic and making a mess of things. Performances need to be put in context though. It was a patched up team with players who haven't been allowed to build the same understanding shown by the team that's played of late.

I think when players generally have an unconvincing game and then go on to making a couple of noticeable mistakes, picked up by the crowd etc, you get the ott reviews.

Regarding his passing it was ok and we don't know the instructions and restrictions he's given. Our current style is quite attacking and it wouldn't be a surprise if the management wanted Soumare to take few risks with his passing.

His best pass was in the second half when at first he was a part of some passing in our own half, got it from Cooper, carried it forward past Norwich's first press, drew attention from their deeper midfielders before threading a fine pass through them to Hamer. Hamer turned and there were space and runs in behind, but his pass failed.

Harsh on the ref who was having to cope with the cancellation of the offside law which oddly was introduced at 8.45pm on a Tuesday night. Fortunately the lino on the JSS side was fully up to speed with the changes.

I agree that Soumare had a disappointing game. Funny enough I would give him an extra 0.5 point for his booking as Seriki played an appalling square ball which was intercepted & we were in trouble till Soumare "took one for the team".

In between his excellent attacking play, Seriki can make some real blunders!

Soumare's booking was a good one, we've been guilty in the past of being too naive in those situations. He stopped a bad situation in its tracks.

Thought Cannon was awful again. He did run about a bit trying to press/close down but as usual he rarely got close to succeeding. He looks a waste of space. 4/10 too generous in my view. Sorry to say this but it’s true.

I think it's obvious by now that he needs to play off a focal-point type striker. That probably needs to be Bamford rather than Ings.

Not making excuses for him as he still looks unable to anticipate anything at times but I think that's how we get the best from him. If we could move him on in January I still would do.

On Soumare, why does it go from him being someone earlier in the season who you weren't sure why he was dropped, to now needing to be sent back due to having an admittedly awful game last night?

It's almost that he's a young player who hasn't played enough competitive football due to a massively bloated squad and now is drastically out of form. I imagine if I pore over previous ratings, there will be times at which Brooks has been written off due to a couple of those utterly half arsed performances last season where the ball bounced off his foot relentlessly, but now there's a very very good player in there.

FWIW, I don't think it would be the worst option in the world to discuss Soumare going back as he's going to get less game time as we go through the season. He's behind Jairo, Peck, Blaster and a fit Tom Davies in those deeper positions - we'll get more performances like last night.

If he was our player u wd give him the benefit of the doubt. However hes not so we are better off trying to develop Matos if we are going to 'school' one of them in how to be a championship midfielder.

Looked at it twice Just cannot see any way Seriki earned a booking last night.

Then 5m latter he was chopped down running into the penalty area, just a free kick ?

Definitely think Sandwich gate hangs over CW we rarely get the rub of the green with refs

Thanks for the report Deadbat and I think i was spot on.

Worrying on that evidence that Peck could be out for 3 weeks. Can't really expect too much from Blaster for a while, while he regains match fitness. A fella sat in front of me turned round and said he didn't look up to it and I replied, he hasn't played for a year, what do you expect?

lets face it. this was a poor match after Saturday 's performance. Evidently Bamford could not get out of bed on Sunday! But Ings and Cannon are not for me. Brooks should not have been rested, we needed him. Blaster will take a few games to get up to speed; Bindon did OK. Norwich are not a bad side. Wilder let this one slip away, I'm afraid. Not a great night.
