They last won at the Lane in 1955. 26 games since then in league and cup and we've won 22 and drawn 4.

Have we ever had a longer unbeaten record against any team?

Bury didn't win at the Lane in 27 games in all competitions between Feb 1925 & Sep 2015. I don't know if there's a longer record but Bury have only won 4 of 42 games at the Lane. Including cup games Pompey are also at 27, so if we don't lose next time we play them it'll surpass Bury.

Burnley overall are worse (57 visits, 5 wins) but their win in 1973 at the Lane means the streak never reached 28 games.

Also, the most visits to the Lane without ever winning is Bradford Park Avenue with 9 (lost 8, drawn 1). Port Vale are also poor, only winning 1 league game in 19 visits, and I'm sure we were all there at that one!

Flipping the stat around slightly, the teams we've played most in the league but never beaten are Hereford and Middlesbrough Ironopolis (both 4) and we've played Bristol Rovers away the most in the league without winning (12, 5 draws and 7 losses) but did win there in a cup game.

Hereford and Middlesbrough Ironopolis are the only teams we've played at home more than once (both twice) but never beat. There are 6 other teams we've played 1 home league game against and never beat, the only two still in existence are Cambridge and Halifax (and sort of Northwich Vics but they I believe have folded and been reborn).

Technically, the Halifax Town we failed to beat was wound up in 2008. The version playing in the National League now is the phoenix club FC Halifax Town.

The Portsmouth sequence is a real hoodoo.

Unlike the sample who turned out for them on Wednesday night, there have been several instances of them looking comfortably the better side, either on paper or on the day, but still going home with nothing.

Last season was a prime example when, despite some atrocious United defending, Pompey somehow contrived not to bury us by 3 or 4 goals.

We've never played Middlesbrough Ironopolis in the Football League. The games you refer to were in the Northern League, which don't usually count :-)
