I admired Morgan as a player. He was, at his best, a very good centre-back and a great leader, full of courage and commitment. He was not a footballing centre-half but even I don't demand that every defender be a Beckenbauer.
As a coach, we ought to remember that he was given the job, like Cresswell, as a cost-saving exercise rather than because of any obvious ability in that discipline.
I thought his first spell as caretaker manager was very poor, notable for basic errors and naivety. Once the initial 'upanatem' factor wore off there was really nothing else there. He did better the second time.
When Nigel took over, I felt his retention of CM was a smart bit of PR and that the former would gradually fade into the background and ultimately move on. Whether or not that was the case, it isn't now. Morgan has quickly become part of an effective management team. He is clearly valued by Nigel (and Andy Garner) and that is good enough for me. Clough (quite rightly) has enough self-confidence not to feel threatened by Morgan and the latter, to his credit, has swallowed any disappointment and got on with his job.
All that said, if Nigel fell under a bus tomorrow, I would not want to see Morgan appointed as a manager. That's nothing to do with my anti-Bladey instincts, just an honest view that he does not have the quality necessary to do the job successfully.
Sorry for the delay in response, I was distracted by my day-job last week! I shall make sure it doesn't happen again!
