The Blades finally broke their Bramall Lane duck, at the fifth time of asking, as they beat Watford by a single goal to move off the foot of the Championship table. As he had last month, Callum O’Hare was the hero with a poachers finish after a smart move in the second half, saw United also finally score a goal at the Kop End. It had been O’Hare who had last scored in that goal – going back to the Bristol City playoff game in May.

Wilder had to make do without stat man Gus Hamer due to a knee injury and brought in Louie Barry. Soumare also came in for Matos. Riedewald joined other returnees Brooks and Shackleton on the bench. Tom Davies also missed out with injury again. Watford, like the Blades, had brought back a former manager Javi Garcia as the Hornets’ managerial merry go round continued with no sign of abating.

The game began with both teams feeling each other out and some poor touches resulted throughout the pitch but McCallum had started with an energy and purpose. The wing back hit a long range shot that was not far over before Bramall Lane rose to their feet to acknowledge the anniversary of George Baldock’s passing. Louza had a similar effort over the bar at the other end for Watford.

It was a relatively even contest but United were starting to apply some pressure and had opportunities from set plays as McGuiness’ header was pushed away from Selvik. Cooper had to scramble down to save a low shot as Watford had their first effort on target. At the other end, Barry’s delivery caused problems again and Tanganga forced the keeper to parry at full stretch – although this effort may have been going wide of the post.

The away side moved down the left side and the cross came in too easily from Wiley and the big striker Kjerrumgaard got in front of Mee but steered it just wide of the far post. McCallum’s strong running continued to be a feature of any good play from United but Campbell was again somewhat isolated as United struggled to create anything in open play. Watford got down the left and a shot was pulled across goal. United won a free kick and a corner as the half came towards the end but could not profit from either. Referee Madley was trying to let the game flow which was something you do not always see but both sides became frustrated with some physical play not being penalised and led to players going down with head injuries and the game not stopping.

The second half began with Watford creating the best chance of the game. The ball was given away cheaply and the away side broke through the middle too easily and as the ball was transferred onto the left side, Wiley was free but made a total hash of the finish slicing wide. Brooks replaced Barry on 56 minutes after another largely ineffective showing from the Villa loan man.

United were trying to attack more down the right this half and Ogbene was seeing much more of the ball. Tanganga fired wide after the ball had bounced around the corner of the box. From the next attack where the ball was moved inside, the ball was adjudged to have been handled by Keben leading to a good opportunity from around 25 yards. McCallum took it and the keeper had to make the save. The goal was not long coming just before the hour mark though. O’Hare was involved backheeling to Tanganga and receiving the ball back to centre. Campbell met it and turned it goalwards but Selvik did well to turn it away but Brooks managed to react and send it back across and O’HARE was first to react to turn home from only a yard. Watford’s defenders appealed for offside but the goal scorer appeared to be behind the ball when Brooks had crossed the ball.

Watford had been readying a triple change even before the goal but now had to make it after conceding. Baah, Bola and Ince were introduced with Irankunda, Wiley and Kayembe the men departing. United looked to try and fashion another chance to finish the game and Brooks was looking lively down the left-hand side but his effort was blocked. The Blades then made three changes of their own with Burrows, Riedewald and Ings replacing McCallum, Soumare and Campbell.

United were now content to hold what they had and were starting to defend deeper but Watford had not created many chances this half after the Wiley miss and the Blades defence was holding firm. Peck and O’Hare were working hard to deny space and they were managing the game well with Ings tussling to help United stay up the field. However, as the game ticked towards the end, Watford created a fantastic opportunity as the cross came in and Louza was left completely unmarked. The midfielder maybe had too much time and was perhaps guilty of being too precise. His effort kissed the top of the bar and the chance. We moved into the 5 minutes of stoppage time but O’Hare was adjudged to have gone to ground too easily and Watford broke leading to a final chance to salvage something. They won a late corner and as the ball dropped Keben could only steer wide, when he should have done better.

United – Just a relief to get the victory. We could not afford to keep losing as we would becoming increasingly cut adrift in the relegation zone. I think we all wanted a good performance and some authority to our play alongside a win but in reality, it was just about the three points really. Today, the performance was not that dissimilar to some of the other games recently. A close game where only a single goal margin would decide things (either way). I think we gave a committed performance and there was effort there and all the stats (aside from possession) were clearly in our favour (touches in opposition box, shots, shots on target, XG). We deserved to win the game and 1-0 was about right.

It was not a great performance and as I say not too different to other games this season but we had more play in the opposition box – more kind of action and chaos even if lacking quality. In general play we created next to nothing outside of the goal – our main chances were the headers from corners (one long ranger apart) and Watford actually did seem to be more dangerous in terms of how they worked the ball for openings but Cooper did not actually have a meaningful save to make – one gather. They just missed big chances - the sliced effort wide and the Louza one. That is why the XG does not always tell the story – as they were the best 2 chances of the game in my opinion? However, despite this and the possession Watford had, I always felt United seemed to always look to create more pressure and have more ball in the Watford third. We at least built up some momentum and second half was much better. Brooks made a difference when he came on and O’Hare and Peck improved hugely after the break.

I am not seeing huge improvements game on game some are. We have been a better under Wilder no doubt but not by that much (Ipswich game aside) but at least are forcing some goalmouth action and the defence has been solid. I will counter and say the last two sides we have played – Hull and Watford – have been really poor and expect both to be near the bottom. Watford in particular today were awful and should have been put away easily. However, their fans have said that any decent side would have beaten us – so there is two ways of looking at it! It was a 1-0 game to us but could have gone the other way – in terms of who took their chance and who did not. I do think we had more of the ball in the opposition box even if we created little and at least were able to keep the ball in the third for a sustained period of time.

We scored a decent goal where we got to the ball first (on quite a few occasions in the build-up) and this meant we kept it alive. I also thought that we were trying to go forward quicker – in the second half – and taking less touches. It is all about narrow margins though and as with the Hull game where we could have drawn or won with chances (penalty/post), Watford missed theirs (sitter after the break and hit the bar) and we took ours – as the manager said. We will continue to have to try and nick close games as the reality is we do not create much at all and do not score many with Campbell still isolated and out of sorts. The flip side is the defence has looked more solid and the three centre backs were all largely solid again.

I am still not convinced what our style/plan it to progress up the field and how we try and play? However, you could say that last year. Our best player today was McCallum (who did well to be fair) which kind of sums up where we are at I suppose. Hamer has not been great this season but will be missed if out for any length of time. I think Wilder will realise which players are not up to it and I am not sure we will see much of Barry after today (he seems to have already seen enough of Matos, Bindon and Godfrey – although latter out for personal reasons it seems). There are a few that seem to show flashes but frustrating elements too – Soumare and Ogbene two that fit into that category from what I have seen.

Overall, it was huge to just win the game. You hope we can get on a run as the last time we won, we then lost two back-to-back and it is so important we follow it up and get something from the next two away games – two quite ordinary sides in my opinion – particularly Blackburn who I pegged to go down this season. It feels quite a pivotal game – we have only scored one goal away from home and we must improve this area.

Today, I think people went away and saw a committed performance and a win – the players clearly tried but it lacked much quality and was a really bad game of football with so many loose touches and passes. On that evidence both sides will be much nearer the bottom than top I am afraid.

Ratings:

Cooper 6/10 – Had very little to do really. Made the one save – where he seemed slow to get down but outside of this the other efforts went wide/over or hit his bar.

Ogbene 6/10 – Ok but nothing remarkable. He did try and get down the side and get some crosses in. Thought he grew into the game and started to become more of an influence 2nd half in the game. Still can do more for me and not sure we have seen him use his pace to really exploit defenders.

McCallum 7.5/10 – Real surprise. He did ok at Hull despite allowing the cross for the goal but deserved to keep his place (and will continue to do so) and he was our best player today. He showed energy, some decent quality on the ball and was involved in many of our better attacks. He was able to link with others and had a decent shot and a few others good balls into the box. Definitely better as a wing back where he does not have to defend as much. Tired in the second half but a very good performance.

McGuiness 7/10 – He was good today and thought he won all his headers and other than one chance down the side, he handled the big lad for them really well. Came onto the ball in a determined fashion and was able to impose himself. Technically not sure he is the best but he kept it simple. Nearly scored with a downward header.

Tanganga 6.5/10 – I still think he may be better in a two but he was decent and another that made sure he got to the ball first and was able to get in front of his man. His distribution and decisions with the ball were mixed but he was involved in the goal and got quite well forward second half. He is a determined and physical player and the sort we need to move away from the bottom.

Mee 6/10 – Steady enough. Reads the game well and just plays very sensibly. Did let his man get across him for the chance first half which went just wide and one other loose touch second half. You feel more comfortable with him in the team and reminds me of players like Stearman and Jake Wright – who also gave that calming presence in the backline when they played.

Peck 5.5/10 – First half thought he did not really get int the game and the lad Louza was the outstanding performer (alongside McCallum) on the field. He again was guilty of too many touches. After the break he improved and started to get to the ball first and was more aggressive. Had another chance from a corner but had it blocked. I do want us to have more control of the middle of the field as teams continue to have far more possession than us in the centre of the pitch. However, we went down the wide areas more than centrally again and that limits how much involvement they can have.

Soumare 5.5/10 – Similar to above – in terms of not really having too much on the ball but having to keep positional shape and discipline. He got his foot in a few times and improved as the game went on. He is quite raw and seems all arms and legs at times but he did keep plugging away and managed to help us keep it alive. We still saw an opponent get down the middle too much (the chance 2nd half saw both midfielders ahead of the ball and us in a bad shape). We need more control in the central area and the fact he keeps swapping players around shows that he is not sure on any of them – Matos seems out of favour to the extent he even chucked the new lad on straight away.

O’Hare 6.5/10 – Thought he was not really involved at all first half and the game passed him by as we rarely attacked centrally. He was arguing with a few of his own players and seemed frustrated but after the break we saw him improve hugely. He started to get his foot in, he linked well with others and was moving around a lot and stopping them come out. He looked more like the O’Hare of last season and the goal was excellent. He started it and then put the cross over and reacted well.

Barry 3/10 – A huge disappointment again. His mark comes from the fact that he took some good corners that led to chances but overall, he was really poor. He seems to have no real asset (apart form his corners) and is so predictable as he just comes inside and tried to get it on his right foot. He is painfully weak and slow too. He is incredibly lightweight and just gets bullied out of things. Looks like the classic example of someone who is not up to the step up of leagues – physicality and pace. He also does not look fit and was shattered after 10 minutes. I really do not see him being a player in the top two leagues on the evidence so far. A loan signing that has not worked and would expect him to go back in January.

Campbell 4.5/10 – He was involved in the goal with a decent effort but outside of this it was another largely anonymous performance where he did not get involved and was not able to affect the game at all. He struggled to impose himself and got outmuscled a fair bit when on one-on-one sprints. I hope he can get back to some kind of form but at the moment with issues over him, Cannon (and Ings fitness) we are crying out for a mobile or/and physical forward that gives us an outlet. The ball does not stick at all – maybe we need to try a two but think he will not do that as he is worried we will get overrun behind – we are having no possession with a 2/3 (if you include O’Hare) in there as it is!

Subs -

Brooks 7/10 – Made a real impact in terms of involvement. He instantly won a tackle, chased back and then made the goal. He was much more of an outlet and gave us far more than Barry in just a few minutes on the field. I expected and hoped for a big season this time out but he started poorly and got injured. He needs to step up now. He cannot have like 1 good game in 4 or 5. Needs to be much more consistent but maybe he will get a chance with Hamer out?

Burrows 5/10 – Not really in the game offensively but did ok defensively. Has lost his spot and deservedly so for a poor start to the season. You would hope other poor performers like Cooper, Peck, Campbell would have similar competition and all 3 could have no argument to lose their places but sadly we do not have that depth of quality behind.

Ings 4.5/10 – I thought he put himself about but looked painfully unfit. He was struggling to keep up at times and was behind the ball. He resorted to just grappling with his man. I have been asking for him to start but now can see why he is not able to begin, or play extended minutes. Looks way short of the conditioning we need – even if with the ball he has shown he can be a clever player.

Riedewald 5/10 – Unremarkable debut. He was neat and tidy on the ball and looks physically strong but lacks pace. He

Manager: Wilder 6/10 – It is three points. The performance was ok but nothing more. The players put effort in and competed but the quality was lacking throughout (for both teams). We maybe shaded it but it came down to us taking a chance and them missing arguable two similar ones. However, we at least showed some resilience once we got in front and kept a rare clean sheet. Credit for him for making an earlier change (normally does them after an hour) in terms of Brooks and this contributed to the winning goal. I still am unconvinced our approach to games means much other than narrow wins or defeats. We could easily win a few like this but lose a similar number and the difference is, we have been the flip side of this last season. I am not sure of our style of play and how we try and create hence why it will continue to be a struggle to put teams away or dominate games. We do not have enough of the ball. I suppose today, we got the win and we needed to find some confidence from somewhere and hopefully it might lead to a bit of a run. The priority is just to move away from the bottom three. That is all that matters at the moment but as I say longer term – we need to have some style and substance to consistently win games – last season was not sustainable and we have seen that this season.

Watford – Really poor side and maybe the poorest we have faced this season. Their passing, touch and decision making for the most part were wretched. I felt a good side would have put them away easily. They defended very loosely and there were gaps we should have exploited. The goal was avoidable as we ran through too easily and they did not react to the ball on a number of occasions. Despite the criticism of their performance and some poor decision making, they did have a lot of the ball but were wasteful when in good areas. The big centre forward had a couple of opportunities but put them wide and then of course Wiley has the best chance of the game and missed it badly. They hit the bar and then miss another guilt edged chance right at the end. As bad as they were, they take their chances (which were better than ours – which as I say makes a mockery of XG to me!) and they draw or win. However, I felt we had more pressure/sustained play in their box despite this and looked more determined to get the win.

They keep changing managers and have gone back to an old manager who they liked from a few years ago. At some point, you would think they might have a period of stability but seems unlikely whilst ever the current ownership group is there. I do not see them anywhere near the playoffs and believe they might struggle. They have a few decent players but seem, like us, to lack leaders and characters and also goals. On that performance today, they will be in a relegation scrap.

Opponent Man of the Match – Louza. Hit the bar when he should have scored but he was very good and technically the outstanding player on the field. He has good vision and can also dribble with the ball. Disappointing that he went down holding his head after a tackle on his leg. We have signed a number of midfielders and none seem quite up to it (so far) and he seemed an obvious one we maybe could have gone and got? Not sure how much they would have wanted of course.

Opponent Weak link – Sissoko got cheered off (never a good sign – see Tom Cannon) but the centre back Keben was atrocious with an awful touch and so clumsy. He got booked and missed the chance at the end.

Referee / Officials – Bobby Madley. Got a lot of attention for those ridiculous dog stories (google it!) which were nonsense but he gave a kind of throwback performance today. He rarely gave free kicks and when he did, they had to be bad and obvious fouls! He let a number of bodychecks go and also waved play on when players went down with head injuries (some were clearly faking them to be fair!). He only booked one player (the handball) and just kind of let the game go – which I liked. Also spotted a mistake by his assistant who wrongly flagged after it came off a Watford head. A few decisions I did not agree with but I did like he was consistent in terms of the amount of physical contact he allowed.

Crowd/Day Out – Nervy is how I would describe it. They kept behind the team and sort of willed them on at the end, cheering tackles and blocks but I think it was definitely more relief at the end. Nice tribute for Baldock with the flag and the applause on the 2nd minute. Watford brought a decent number (more than I expected as they don’t normally travel with many away fans up here – from what I can recall). Seemed as frustrated as the Blades fans with elements of their play. The countdown on Cooper (when he had the ball) showed how desperate they were!

As an aside, had a nice night out after with Roy/Bladespod/Glaisher-Hernandez/Karl/Webding and Eggy down the Kelham Island Beer Festival. Was the last night and a lot of beer had sold out so we were let in for free but still had a decent range and enjoyed it before ending up in the Kelham Island Tavern and then for a curry down Heeley. Once again the stuff around the match is often more enjoyable than the 90 minutes – despite the win!

Spot on

Watford were abysmal , we were slightly better . Three points was vital and we move on - to be in this position re squad and league position after the time spent in the PL and parachute payments shows how badly and shortsightedly we have been run . Very sad .

The first half was really more of the same under Wilder since the turn of the year--apart from the corners we created next to nothing and it was a bit dull. But I thought we were pretty good for 30-35 minutes in the second half. The litmus test for me is am I standing up while watching the TV? If I am, we're attacking and creating more and it's a bit more exciting. I was on my feet for a decent part of the second half and that'll do for me.

Having said that, I had to drop the wife off at the train and so missed the last ten minutes. Sounds like we were pretty nervy and gave up some good chances and that seems to have colored people's views of the performance a bit.

Thanks for that, wasn’t able to see the game yesterday so a detailed report most welcome 👍

do not quite agree DB. Peck had a good game, out on his feet at the end. He did a fair bit of nagging too to make sure his partner was where Peck needed him. O'Hare too ran his socks off and made a difference. Add these 2 to Sam Mc and they were my 3 for the day. Watford were the better team and might have won but the gods were with us when they hit the bar and on a few other occasions. Truth is our forwards are not pulling up the trees and the midfield and back line are staying under pressure.. For my money I would always have 3 in midfield, 2 is too few; we need depth and width and 2 does not achieve this. I must confess, I think I have a better view than you. I think you are on the Kop?

Brooks made the goal and was good. He worked back and looked a threat the other way. Thought it was the best he has looked and I have been critical of him this season.

O Hare was poor first half. He was not in tje game at all. He was much better after the break as I acknowledged.

Campbell was not very good but contributed to the goal at least. I think Ings has done well in other cameos but Im struggling to recall anything Ings did yesterday? We needed to keep the ball but it kept coming back as he did not win any duels or keep it.

He was so far off the pace and blowing after 5 minutes. His conditioning is nowhere near the level required at this level. Maybe he improves this but he can't start or play more than 15-20 mins in yesterday. Me and my Uncle could not believe how slow/unfit he looked.

We absolutely need a centre forward in January. None look close to up to it in terms of leading the line in this system.

We do not control the midfield at all though. Granted as Wilder said they are inexperienced but we need to keep it far better. We seem to be chasing too much in this area of the field.

I sit in the South Stand btw

Thought the ref had a shocker, at times. The Watford keeper ran out, dived, to punch a ball clear, collided with someone and the ref awarded a goal kick?

Agree with most of your view of the game, the Watford keeper made three really good saves, and COH was quick to react when Andre Brooks pounced on the keepers parry and fired straight along the goal line for the tap in.

My (old fashioned) view is that we need a couple more six footers, one up front and another in the middle. We won't be winning any headers in the middle with Peck, COH, Barry, Shacks, Burrows, etc. McCallum is the outlier here, not a tall lad but gets incredible height when he jumps.

When Sydie is your tallest midfielder (at about 5ft 9?) you know you have problems.

Soumaré is 6.1

Personally thought the young lad did well

We all see games differently, pal and I genuinely think where you sit in the ground has a big bearing on this. I thought he was a passenger in the first half, and grew more into it in the second half. Just what I saw.

Peck is about 6 ft.

Cant disagree too much with the report or scoring DB. It was a win achieved by a 35 minute good period in the second half. Thats the difference we play in patches. It may be down to conditioning but more likely to be to do with tactics and shape. Thought Soumare added balance with his left foot and physicality. Much better in second half than first as were the majority of the team.

Agree can't fathom what formation we are playing at times. CW said is was 4-2-4 post match with 2 deep lying midfield players whilst acknowledging the front two were a 9 and 10. Thats where the problem lies for me. Watford had control of the midfield and looked dangerous on the break but did little with their superior possession. Still feel we will be much better with 3-4-1-2. Problem is who plays up front with Campbell as Ings is no where near fit.

The stark statistic is we have only scored 4 goals in 10 games. Unless we improve on that then we are destined to languish near the bottom.

I can not understand why Seriki was not on the bench. His pace would have made a difference late on yesterday. A lightweight injury prone Shackelton is not the answer. Our test now is to manage 3 games in 6 days with our poor conditioning. We have to hope we don't incur any more injuries.

The Louza chance was very concerning. For a team scrapping to keep a clean sheet in the last few minutes and having put on an extra defender, to give him that much space in the area was ridiculous. We got away with that.
I was surprised Barry got a start and he was predictably terrible, I'd take him out of the squad totally and get him back ASAP. Surely it makes sense to fill his spot with one of our own, young players.

A fair report and pretty much as I saw it. Perhaps a couple of platers deserved a point higher but that is a personal view.

I think that last four games have all been pretty similar in that they could have gone either way. We look a lot more organised but the lack of goal threat means we will probably continue to hover around the bottom for a while yet. Teams will realise that they only have to be able to score one to be pretty certain of getting something from the game. Because of this I see little prospect of putting a run of wins together and rapidly moving up the table. Still it was a good feeling to see a home win at last and the players at least put 100% in to get it.

I thought Ings was better than you credit him for, he won a couple of fouls by doing a ‘Sharp’ and falling over and he made some clever runs, it will only ever be for 20 mins though because I agree that he’s very unfit.

Worrying that we still gave them 2 or 3 opportunities in our box that a decent team scores, we just don’t seem to have the desire or ability to get close to opposition players in key areas and the one where Wiley was away and Louza hit the bar as well as a free header at the back post were all poor defensive moments for us.

I still think having Ogbene as a RWB is a hinderance, particularly when we seem to use him as a final 3rd outlet a lot, then it leaves us exposed on the counter and inevitably pulls a CB or a midfielder out wide to try and stop their left hand side attacks.

When it comes to young player heights ,take it all with a pinch of salt ,some grow 3 or 4 inches in a year at ages 18/21 marsh is down as 5 foot 9 and he's now a good 6 footer

Campbell 4.5/10 –. He struggled to impose himself and got outmuscled a fair bit when on one-on-one sprints.
Can you deduct a point everytime he shoulder barges the defender and gives away a free kick?

On 1 occasion he knocked their player over so late the ball was in the other half

So frustrating as they regroup and reset, he’s like an angry little man charging around

Thanks for the report Deadbat , especially as I was unable to go as recovering from surgery.
All about getting 3 points and moving in the right direction at the moment.
Hopefully we'll also start to see better performances once we've got a bit more belief.

I thought Ings was better than you credit him for, he won a couple of fouls by doing a ‘Sharp’ and falling over

Also did a fabulous Sharp at one point by holding the ball up and sticking his arse into the defender.

Gave me such a rush of deja vues I had to check the date on the front of the programme.

What standing on a box? 5.8 according to Wiki

I'm not an expert on centimeters to feet and inches, but I am sure this is about 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 meters)

As Bladeloyal says, there are a few incorrect player heights on various sites. I remember Chis Basham was often listed as 5'10.

Sorry to disappoint you bake, but Peck is at least 6ft and as bulked out and did have a very good game, and yes he was 5ft 8 once 👍
Good news if he is. He certainly doesn't look it on the pitch, but I guess he's often surrounded by giants.
