Would you be happy with Freeman as our starting Right Back next season, or do you think we can aim higher?

I vote yes, didn't play many games on the right of a back 4, but looked very good when he did.

If we can't get brayford back, which iv'e not lost hope on us doing, then yes blader,i agree ,he can definately start at right back for me,for exactly the same reasons you gave.

Think a better question would be Freeman and a quality striker or Brayford? Think Freeman will be able to do the job this season and hopefully given the game time develop into a top quality right back.

The reason I posted it is that really we are not going to sign Brayford. We would all love to have him, but some fans need to take a step back and look at it objectively. However, Freeman is a very possible signing: out of favour at his parent club, 21 years old and been on loan at us where he has performed well IMO. Also Derby_Blade that isn't a realistic trade I can foresee. A striker is Clough's number 1 priority. The striker comes first, so it will be striker PLUS a right back, whoever it may be. He would not sign Brayford if it meant we couldn't sign a striker.

He will be signed and do some good runs and look.good going forward whilst learning to defend and give away costly free kicks and pens but will learn quickly.

I meant the same as you, getting Brayford is unrealistic and you'd have to sacrifice 2 signings worth of cash to get him so would be better to sign Freeman and have money left over for a striker. A right back is still a priority though as we currently have even less right backs than strikers so still need a high quality RB.

Yep, apologies, I understand now! Freeman is a perfect signing for me, we need to walk before we can run. Sign players who are certainly good enough at League 1 now, with the potential to play at a higher level should we get there. I'm so glad Clough seems to be building a team of kids..... Midget kids I'm not so sure about though!

I would love to see both Brayford and Freeman come back but the latter would be more than capable as our regular right back. Looked generally tidy on the ball and dependable, so yes he would do just fine.

I would like Brayford starting at RB and Harris starting at LB however Freeman can do a job in both positions so would be a great squad player.

This will be the first indicator of whether we have a "penniless" Prince or not !!!

I won't mind seeing us sign freeman, would prefer Brayford to sign but if we can't land him then I have no problem with Freeman, he looked solid for us and to say he was playing at left back most of the time.

The arguments been done elswhere, but I don't think money will be the issue. Brayford would be an idiot to sign for us permanently! A lad of his talent, pedigree and age it would be ridiculous for him to be in League 1 football next season! He clearly likes the club, the fans and the gaffer, but at the end of the day he wants to play Premier League football. Signing for a League 1 team at 27 effectively writes that off for good.

It's a no from me on Freeman. Prone to too many mistakes, probably due to inexperience. Poor passing and decision making.

I reckon his poor passing is often down to him playing on the wrong side. He always looks to pass right footed, often by cutting back inside, when a natural left-sided player would play an earlier ball.

He has decent pace, touch and likes to get forward. An extended run on the right of the pitch would hopefully see him flourish.

I'd be happy enough if he was our starting right back next season. Obviously Brayford is the better player but he should be at the top end of the Championship.

What I would do is make sure that our more experienced centre half (whether it's Collins or a new signing) is playing on the right hand side of the centre half pairing if he is. He's still developing the defensive side of his game which Clough himself has mentioned, so I think that would benefit him.

I must let Nigel know that we have no chance of signing The Beard. You'd think he'd have realised by now wouldn't you?
;)

He's on £20k a week at Cardiff (I'm ITK about such things). Should we just offer him that, or should we give him a bit more to help him decide to sign for us?

?? Did you ever see MacMahon and Hill or Williams or Stewart ?

I sure did! Like quite a few Blades AND Clough, we identified McMahon and Hill as not only not good enough but actually part of the problem.

McMahon and Hill were a disaster when we were in possession. It was like playing with 9 men. Modern football needs full backs who can play football and defend. You can't break down a 10 man defence unless your full backs can get forward and get crosses in from inside the box at the by line - not from half way inside the opposition half like McMahon. The days of full backs being good at defending and being able to knock the ball down the line into space are gone - although not sure McMahon could even do that. As for Freeman, he is way, way, way better than McMahon, Hill, Williams and Stewart, however, since full back is so important I think we need more experience and better. (By the way, I'm not knocking Matt Hill at centre half where he always did a great job.)

I'm glad that Clough saw right through McMahon where Wilson & Weir didnt. Although McMahon would sometimes look the part (crunching tackles, bombing forward etc) he was a thug that offered nothing in possession & constantly lost his man throughout games; each time looking around for someone to blame other than himself. Getting rid of him six months early without any pay-off whilst swapping him for a talented LB in Harris is the best bit of business that Nige has done since he came imo.

I always thought he was a bit of a quim. Always wanting to mount, wind up or touch up the opposition. Unnerving at times.

Tell you what for a bloke who knows nothing you sure make a lot of assumptions.

Ah, but then Cardiff were in the PL. Like most things, they'll have to re-assess costs etc. now there's a drop in income. Vincent Tan will have had his fingers burnt - not least allowing Malky Mackay to blow summat like £50m on dross. Also, OGS is not certain to remain as manager.

Brayford, like an awful lot of players, has big decisions to make.
