We don’t score enough goals that’s obvious. However we are clearly lacking goal threat from our midfielders.

Take last season:

Peck - 2929 minutes and 0 goals
Souza - 2791 minutes and 0 goals
O’Hare - 3154 minutes and 2 goals

That’s almost 9000 minutes or 100 games of football between them for 2 goals, which is nothing short of disgraceful.

The fact that Arblaster and Davies combined for more goals (3) speaks volumes.

Take the Hecky season where we had Doyle, Berge, McAtee midfield. All capable scorers and we’ve replaced them with one dimensional players.

I think Peck has especially been given an easy ride from fans. If he needs another player (ie Souza) to defend and he can’t score then what does he do.

And I’ll take a bet with anyone that Matos and Soumare combined will score under 3.5 goals

You're absolutely right, our midfielder's return is pathetic (and our strikers aren't much better). However, if you're counting McAtee you've probably got to count Hamer and Brooks.

The Hull goal says everything they had 4 players in the box we had 3 defenders and there wide player caught us out by whipping the ball in early.

The deeper midfielders are under instruction to stay back to an extent I believe

Peck still should have scored though

O'Hares numbers however are an absolute disgrace

Not worried about Soumare and Matos' goal contributions. Caicedo is a £100m DM and he scores 1 goal a season on average.

Peck needs to figure out what he is though. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up shifting to right-back later in his career.

He’s scored 3 already this season

Nobody dares to run beyond in fear of the headless chicken response we've had to losing the ball under Selles where they all ran around like a balloon that's had the air let out of it. They've retreated the other way.

This season as a whole is a downgrading of last year in terms of being in the Prem, can't hit a barn door and getting hammered every week but now doing the same against inferior opposition. Instead of wondering how to tame the likes of Salah and Haaland, the defence are fretting over the might of McBurnie and Adam Armstrong.

I still don't think as a team we shoot often enough, its been the case under Wilder for quite some time.

There was an occasion against Hull where the ball came out to the edge of the box where it was crying out to be leathered towards goal. Matos I think passed it sideways then we lost the ball a few seconds later. Hit the target and you might score or create an opportunity for a rebound or a deflection.

I know, why did I go with Xhaka in my fantasy team... he only got 1 goal in each of his last 3 seasons though
Someone has to score the goals.

Which is why arguments about certain PL midfielders not scoring are fundamentally flawed. Others pick up the slack. Not so with us.

Yeah totally, I just think judging a DM on their goals scored is a bit like judging a fish on its ability to climb trees

Yes, agree. The problem is we have nothing but such players.

Because the people building the squad were idiots

Leeds:

Tanaka - 5 goals
Gruev - 0 goals
Aaronson - 9 goals

Burnley:

Cullen - 2 goals
Brownhill - 18(!) goals
Laurent - 2 goals

Now I’m not expecting 10 goals from Peck or anything like that but our main midfielders who played the most minutes last season combined for 2 goals.

I would love to have their manager.
Luckily for us the only job that might tempt him right now is the England one. He has said being at our club is the next best thing to playing. He still needs to prove himself for a top job. Maybe promotion and then keeping us up.

They don't get in the box, or run beyond anyone. Peck especially should be doing a lot of it. O'Hare should be posting better numbers as well.
Pecks actually had 2 decent heading chances in the last 2 games, 1 of them harshly ruled out

The pressure is off him with you. Coventry are very similar to us, a perennial also ran with aspirations but no great expectations. He’ll want better than that, but won’t get a top job. He’ll end up with a club aspiring to the top 10 of the PL with the occasional foray into Europe.
