Is Tom Cannon the most useless striker we've ever had?

A genuine debate to be had on this. And not just "he's shit" - he's genuinely like playing with 10 men and it's making us so much worse when he comes on the pitch.

When I say useless - I don't mean in terms of his actual technical quality, I mean in terms of the little (no) impact he has in games.

He is certainly since I've been going.
Conor Sammon made the strikers work. So would Craig Beattie.
Joe Ironside would rough them up. As would Michael Higdon.

Tom Cannon just ambles around and doesn't do a fucking thing.

I'm of the opinion that he is a much worse option now than either Ryan One or Jevan Beattie.

What have the coaches been telling him to work on since January?

He doesn't seem to have any sort of outstanding attribute, whether its pace, strength, height, positioning or general footballing intelligence. Maybe he was seen as some sort of Billy Sharp replacement but without any footballing brain whatsoever.

Being a big lump who can't score a goal like the players mentioned before at least give defenders something to have to work around. Burke for example was a donkey but was big and fast.

You only have to look at someone like Emile Heskey's goalscoring record which was pretty average for a striker but was a PL regular for 15 years owing to his all round game and contribution

Other than occupying our cursed No 7 shirt it’s difficult to see what he brings to the squad. Not even good at Brewster’s cheerleader role.

How dare they give the number seven shirt to Cannon, and before him, Brewster? What does the legendary Tony Currie think.I would imagine not fit to tie bootlaces, summat like that, I bet.

Pretty much like retiring the shirt when you think about it

Forget the price tag 🏷️ he is actually terrible 😞 a source of inspiration for all young aspiring professionals at grass routes … never give up on your dream

Cannon reminds me of Madine...

As in, he looks like Madine.

I can't believe he's actually made it this far in a professional capacity.... and has actually played for 4 decent teams!

Yes, he's been disappointing given the money spent, but really don't think he's had a run in the side. He's made 8 starts in the league since signing and only completed 90 mins once (his debut!). During his half a season at Stoke, he completed a full match 17 times. Maybe he doesn't fit our style of play, but look at Kieffer Moore at Wrexham, he's scored about the same amount of goals already he managed during the entirety of last season. Cannon scored 11 goals in 25 apps for Stoke, which is very solid. One thing is for sure, we simply don't create enough chances. There's a reason our top scorer managed only 10 goals last season despite accumulating 92 points.

Same height as Ogbene, yes he is a winger/RCB however with his pace he would be better up top than Cannon. Although Cannon is still young at 22, there are plenty of academy kids like you say that could have done a similar or not any worse job than him and for £10million less!

Burke would at least get on the ball and run up the pitch with it, even if he did fuck all with it once he got there.

Higdon at least managed to score on his debut.

Sammon at least got into the kinds of positions from which he could miss sitters.

Horsfield at least contributed about as much as Cannon has in his Blades career but in far, far fewer games.

Craig Beattie... no, who am I kidding, he was absolute garbage.

But I can't think of anyone actually worse than Cannon, no.

Some signings just don’t work, this one certainly hasn’t and I really don’t believe it will come good, just wish the club could admit it and move him on asap as it really is hindering us, should have let him go to Preston and brought someone else in anyone else. I wasn’t a big fan of Kieffer but 100% I’d have kept him over cannon.

Adrian Littlejohn springs to mind but even he was at least quick.

I don't think that he'll be too bothered, his mate Woody however will be turning in his grave.

If I was Ryan One I'd be knocking on Wilders office door every day after training and asking him why he's picking him over me....

I get we want to try to maximise the asset, but One's ceiling is exponentially higher than Cannons, so I'd rather be burning through minutes getting One up to speed rather than that shower of shite....

The issue with Cannon is that he can’t fully be judged yet because in his 15 games played to date.
He’s averaging an incredibly low 1 or 2 touches per game. Basically he hardly ever touches the ball, at least he can say he’s not missing chances.

The issue for me is his body language stinks, he does seem to jog around lacking pace and/ or strength making himself so easy to mark up.
Could be wrong but it’s as though he’s hiding and doesn’t want the ball.

I don't think you can even defend him with, he's not played much or he needs a run in the side. He doesn't even seem to be able to do the most basic things like control the ball, hold it up for a few seconds or make any kind of intelligent run or movement.

He's not even a lump, because that would suggest some semblance of strength and he's as weak as piss after a few shandies.

After we paid £1.2m for Horsfield to make him permanent he never played another minute of league football for us (he only made 3 appearances on loan then fell out with Warnock) yet I'm still not sure Cannon has done more for us...

Bit of a digression here, but who has worn the No.7 shirt for us?
Apart from the legend that was Woody, and the aforementioned Brewster and Cannon, I can think of :

Colin Morris
Andy Gray?
Alan Roberts
Ian Bryson
Carl Bradshaw
Gary Hamson?
Steve Neville
Len De Goey
Ryan Flynn (if he would be better than Cannon)

Trying to think who had the shirt in the first Wilder spell from 2016 and can only think of possibly Samir Carruthers?

Probably

Certainly the most unlikely to:

1) Break sweat
2) Win the ball
3) Be able to perform a single press up

What about "The Chief", nice guy it seemed, and a bit of a cult hero, but come in he was dogger.

I reckon Oscar Pistorius, without the metal legs, could have ran onto a through ball quicker.

Also, Phil Starbuck, seemed to remember being quite "excited" when we signed him, he was utter toss as well
