How much is Europa League worth?

Just giving thought to our semi final.

Now I aren't getting ahead of myself saying 'what happens when we're in it' or any other such nonsense, but what is the financial incentive for the club to qualify for the Europa League? Most clubs complain that it clogs up fixtures and they don't benefit financially from it, but is that speaking in absolute terms or Premier League terms?
 

From a pure "Prize money" perspective, its worth €5m to us ;)

Prize money
Similar to the UEFA Champions League, the prize money received by the clubs is divided into fixed payments based on participation and results, and variable amounts that depend of the value of their TV market.[13]

A group stage participation in the Europa League awards a base fee of €1.3 million. A victory in the group pays €200,000 and a draw €100,000. Also, each group winner earns €400,000 and each runner-up €200,000. Reaching the knock-out stage triggers additional bonuses: €200,000 for the round of 32, €350,000 for the round of 16, €450,000 for the quarter-finals and €1 million for the semi-finals. The losing finalists receive €2.5 million and the champions get €5 million.[14]

  • First qualifying round: €120,000
  • Second qualifying round: €130,000
  • Third qualifying round: €140,000
  • Play-off round elimination: €150,000

I read something a few years ago that said, due to travel and the cost of hosting matches, Spurs din`t break even until thy reachedth kockout stages.

Plus you have to play a shit load of games on a Sunday...
 
Would we go into the qualifying round or straight into the group stages? The UEFA co-effiencents melt my brain.

So that would be a minimum of 6 games in the europa league, The JPT, the early stages of league and FA cups and a full 46 games season (Plus potential playoffs).

If you think the team will be running on empty at the end of this season, just think what they will be like come next april.

Cheers. SO, really, it isn't actually worth a lot to us financially is it. As is obvious with every team in recent years (Swansea, Newcastle, Wigan etc) The Europa League does affect league form, and our priority next year has not be to get promotion. I thought there might be a bit more money in it for us to be honest. From a club perspective it might not be great, but the memory if we got Inter Milan in our group would be absolutely incredible!

Long shot, but could we request to not play in the JPT?
 
Depends, if we qualify as losing finalists to Arsenal we would go into the qualifiers, win and straight into the groups.

Thi is exactly what we should be doing, esecially as the JPT hs the stupid rule about not making wholesale changes from the last league game...
 
i didn't think we qualified.. i may be wrong but Millwall weren't allowed entry under similar circumstances.. perhaps they changed the rules.. wigan got straight into the rounds because they won.. not because they were runner up to a team that had already qualified.. please someone tell me i'm wrong

If we face Arsenal in the final and they have secured a Champions League qualification, then the FA Cup runners-up go into the Europa League!
 
I would say it would be virtually impossible to play in the JPT if we were in the Europa League. We would however not have to play in the League Cup until round three if we were in Europe

From a point of view of having money to spend on transfers it's worth fuck all as the agents will have the prize money going straight in the players pockets as bonus's.
 
Surely if we did do the unthinkable and end up In Europa League next season we could attract better players also Maguire, brayford and coady would be more inclined to stay.

Come on Cloughie get us to the final!

Althogh it will of curse increase our turnover, and thus the amount we can spend on playing wages...

Millwall lost in the first round to Ferencváros, but I think this is the last season the runner up qualifies for Europe.

If Man Utd finish 7th in the league, wouldn't we would be in Europe instead of them?
Can we be sure the "powers that be" wouldn't find a reason/excuse/loophole to replace them with us.
There is bound to huge pressure exerted from certain quarters and by Man.U's friends in the media.
 
If we were to qualify for the EL as cup runners up we would go in as the lowest ranked English qualifier which would mean that we would go in in the third qualifying round. If we got past that we would go in to the play off round. We have to get past that to get in the group stage.

As a guide to who we might play, the lowest ranked English team qualifying this time (actually Welsh) played Malmo of Sweden, They beat them over two legs and then played Petrolul Ploiesti of Romania. They beat them as well and got through to the group stage.

It would be interesting to see if an English third tier team is better than the top teams in countries like Sweden and Romania. My hunch is not and that we will see any European adventure ending before August is out.
 
The way Arsenal are going, there is a chance they'll slip out of the top 4, there is also the possibility of Man U winning the Champions League and taking Arsenal's Champion's League place.

BUT the biggest hurdle is us actually winning at Wembley!
 
Wenger has said that his priority now is a top 4 finish and the FA Cup, which would represent a successful season. Shame they're out of contention for the title. If they were still in it, they might not have prioritised the FA Cup so highly.

The other teams in the 3rd qualifying round would be those finishing in the positions below (plus those who've got through earlier rounds of course). Not sure how it's seeded.

Inter Milan, Villarreal, Real Sociedad, Monchengladbach, Galatasary would be in there as things stand!

I don't know how it is seeded either, but Sweden are ranked 24 and Romania 22 in the UEFA co-efficients and Malmo and Petrolul qualified as the lowest ranked Swedish qualifier and highest ranked Romanian qualifier respectively.

I deduce from that that in the 3rd qualifying round, we would play someone finishing 3rd in the top division in countries like Poland, Romania, Belarus, Sweden, Slovakia or Croatia (ranked 20-25) and if we get through that meet one of those countries' cup winners.
