T Davies and Shackleton out for 4-6 weeks.
Davies was a gamble that unfortunately is not going to come off, Shackleton is a waste of a contract, wages, physio resource, coaching time, training kit, matchday kit and most other things involved at the club . We should have just offered Osborn a bit more money to stay for a year or two.

Or we should have not offered either Shackleton or Osborn a contract and just utilised the academy a bit more.

Playing 4-3-3 with two 8s should really help to get our best players on the field at once.

I didn’t like when we dropped O’Hare last season. I think he adds a lot.

O’Hare-Peck-Hamer

I like this a lot. If we get Barry then him and Brooks aside Campbell. You’ve then got Moore and Cannon and One who might also be asked to come on from the left. It leave a need for obvious competition on the right.

But I can also see a point where Arblaster is back.

Hamer-Arblaster-Peck

Then O’Hare gets pushed further forward.

I also like the look of this; you could have a left side or Burrows, Hamer, O’Hare, which looks incredibly competent. You would then have a right side of Seriki, Peck, Brooks, with Arblaster at the side or vice-versa with Peck, 4 players who came through the ranks together.

So you can kind of see why United might be conservative in the market and where we definitely need to recruit and where perhaps we might wait.

Keeper, we’ll stick with what we have and possibly offload one.

Defence, with 4 centre backs already including a much improved RND, and a few shaky right-back back ups, a guy who could play right back and centre back would be ideal.

Midfield, we already have Arblaster, Peck, O’Hare and Hamer who are first choice picks. Either one misses out or one plays further forward. Hopefully you have Davies to give Gus a breather then I’d say for a number 8 spot Marsh did himself no harm and Caceres will also start getting games, so it is possible that solution comes form within.

For the front three, we only need one central striker so if Campbell starts, we have Cannon and Moore as alternatives plus Oné, not to mention Marsh can play there. Assuming we get Barry, then O’Hare, Oné and even Cannon are alternatives there. That’s not withstanding Caceres can play there and also Nwachukwu. That’s enough. On the other side Brooks I want to see more of. It’s just a question if Ukaki can be relied upon as an alternative.

Looking at minimising players sitting it out, I reckon you could get away with two signings after Barry:

Hamza Choudhury - covers right back, centre midfield and also I reckon could be another centre back if required. Maybe he’d cost 5m but good wages.

Grady Diangana - covers attacking midfield and right wing. Currently out of contract having left West Brom.

If we went for a loan or perm option then David Brooks, Oliver Antman, Bobby Cordova-Reid would all tick the box of covering attacking midfield and right wing. Not sure the season he had last year, but Tahith Chong at Luton seems wasted there in League One.

Houston, Shackleton is rivalling John Ebbrell as our worst midfield signing of all time.

Well according to jimmy tumble and his crew where we'll stocked in that department nowt to moan or owt to worry about this 11 gets in top 6 !.

Sorry you lost me at the ok with our CH options and RND improved comments

I was picking up on comments here saying RND looked good yesterday. If he’s over his injury he can be an asset. I appreciate one additional centre half wouldn’t hurt but we are a Championship club. We have Anel, Bindon and Robbo. We’re not carrying multiple first choice centre backs and them not making the squad. We simply won’t. It’s wasteful. What we might do is get one who can also play right back and double their chances of not being in the stands.

Some thing we will sign 7 or 8. Living in cloud cuckoo land. I’m glad they are not the ones holding the purse strings!

We should absolutely replace Souza, considering Davies + Shackleton unfortunately can't keep fit and we don't know how Arblaster will come back. I'm a big fan of O'Hare but I'm not convinced he can play in a midfield 3, certainly isn't a wide man and if he doesn't play as the 10 I struggle to see how you get him in the team.

one bad injury to peck and were in trouble especially with arblaster not ready yet and davies and shackleton constantly crocked so for me yes we definetly need to bring a dm in if choudray is affordable he would be my choice after a shaky start last season he played well in the last few games and has the added bonus that he can fill in at rb after bindon and barry think we need 3 more to come in

The wings are a bigger priority than central midfield unless Caceres and Ukaki make the step up in pre-season. We only have Brooks and Selles indicated that he's likes players to have one position and learn to master it.

What happens when Guss leaves....?

RND looks done at any pro level to me. He couldn’t cope with Non league strikers last night. Last season against a relegated Cardiff in the cup he should have been sent off and/or subbed long before half time.
Sad what the injury has done.
Hope he is getting his coaching badges or freshening up his civil engineering

I would be looking at the loan market for a top quality CB, CM, and wing. If we can bring Hamza back to give more depth at RB and CM as well I am not sure we need much else (unless we lose key players).

The main position needing players?

Souza - Gone
Choudhury - Loan back
Arblaster - Back in September
Davies - Not sure if a bad injury or not risked
Peck - See above
Shackleton - See above
Blaster arrived on the scene unexpectedly, this boy will do the same this season.
Sheffield born and bred!

Tyler Morton ( my wish)........i have a feeling that with what Selles said in his interview after the game at York, one player in soon within the week possibly >(Barry) others ....we will need to wait a little bit......thats why i think it could be a player who was involved in the U21's championship teams ..surely they are having an extra couple of weeks off.

Be interesting to see how he gets on against Rotherham and Burton, both of whom are a higher level than what he was playing last season with Fleetwood.

Put in good performances against those 2, and I could definitely see him playing a part at least from the bench this season, especially if Davies isn't going to be fit.

He mentions needing support in the wide areas. He then mentions needing a right side centre back/ right back at 3.15 ish. Not sure whether he means we need a player for both positions or one who can play both. I assume as he didn't mention the left side that he is happy with his left centre back options.

Worryingly he didn't seem to mention centre midfield, especially in the light of losing Souza and papier mache Tom Davies.

Looking at his videos reels, I’d stake the farm on Wouter Burger… very combative midfielder…Get him in, I’d be a happy bunny.

We are in trouble if PSV take Hamer

Peck was also rumoured to be off.

Blaster coming back from a long injury and who knows if he’ll be the same player (at least initially)

Shackleton and Davies cannot seriously be replied on given they just cannot stay fit. They are serious options for a side hoping to challenge at the top end

We probably need to sign 2 CMs I would say. As well as the wingers. CB and right backs we need. Issue with the reliance on loans is you’re left replace half a squad each year.

I would hope that if Hamer does go, we get a half decent amount for him and we can then afford to bring in a good quality player to replace. (no idea who that is...)

Likewise really with Peck.

PSV in for Hamer is a tough one to look past. Suspect he'll fancy that, assuming the money is right - might even open up more chances for the national team for him. Gotta be a big fee though. Still plenty on time on his contract, widely acknowledged as the best player in the league. We should make bank.

Who comes in though? Nobodies irreplaceable but will we have the time to secure a enough quality?

While it looks like a stong starting eleven and there's cover up front, I do worry about the depth of the squad. Playing Selles-ball will be taxing on the players and injuries / burnout will inevatably be experienced. Like others, I think another CM is required - the current incumbants, while all good players, are all attacking minded and there's a risk the better and / or physically stronger (and taller) sides might bulldoze their way through - I keep having flashbacks to Norwood getting brushed aside.
If an RB that is able to cover CB is indeed required, Dunne at QPR would have been a decent fit - he'd also have added height while defending and a threat at set pieces, even if his attacking open play is somewhat limited. Hamza would be an obvious shout to cover CM and RB but would be an expensive deal to do and would still leave another CB being needed - like Shackleton and Davies, I don't think anyone could / should rely on RND to remain fit and be a viable option.
