I'm optimistic for how he can improve us. Poor fitness, and a lack of tactical flexibility have really cost us, both under Hecky and Wilder. Selles appears to be a hiring intended to fix both of those issues.

I am especially intrigued by the statements mentioning how he likes his team to be attacking and proactive - two traits we didn't exhibit that much last season.

Reading some of the comments on there ,I just worry about our fanbase these days.
I’ve worried about them for a while, like Norman Bates and his mum with a touch of Tourette’s. Tena pads are available to buy over the counter.

I’d hope we have broken through that glass ceiling. Anyway, no point going down the same rabbit hole again.

UTB
The statement from the owners would seem to suggest they haven't put all their eggs in promotion next season basket

"The road ahead may require patience, but also promises excitement, growth, and a footballing identity that reflects both our history and our ambition."

Championship ffp limit is £13m per season. Small fry compared to parachute money, that doesn't buy a promotion squad.
39m losses over 3 years and they are allowed to inject equity which takes it to 15m per season. No idea what we 'lost' last year if anything but I'm sure they owners have plans to increase revenue

God knows what the board are seeing here
Guessing he’ll be a yes man

Of course he’ll be a YES MAN, every manager is, otherwise they’d never be appointed.

Think the main reasons for the change must be due to a change in management structure and reputational damage created by Wilder.

1: Suspect SUFC have changed from the old fashioned UK style manager system, where the manager controls almost everything at a club and has a big input and final decision in buying players. Everywhere else in the world, the owners/ advisors/ director of football run the club and choose the players. They consult with the 1st team coach but the 1st team coach is basically given players and told to prepare them and divide tactics. This is the system used around the world and in the top flight.

2: Maybe the club want to buy more foreign players. Wilders CV is pretty poor regards foreign players. Selles is multi lingual, worked as a coach in several countries and has vast experience working with numerous nationalities.

3: Wilder is passionate and fans love it. It was more in fashion in previous decades but these days almost all managers are computerised robots. Maybe the owners want to drag the club into the current day. Wilder was sometimes a liability regards his emotions where as Selles is a much safer pair of hands regards emotional stability and behaviour.

4: Reputational image of the club. Wilder was generally disliked by fans of other clubs and didn’t have a good reputation in the media. Selles is a young, good looking guy, more appealing to the media. The off field discipline of the players was terrible, often fighting during and after matches and surely a manager is partially to blame for £500K of fines.

5: Selles was known for a high pressing style and let’s be honest Hull looked good at the Lane, think Wilder was tactically out smarted that day, think that will have played a part in their decision.

6: This hasn’t been mentioned anywhere but was or is Wilders daughter in a relationship with a player? This is really risky as it can create favouritism and/ or internal politics totally disrupting a harmonious squad. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was seen as a massive negative and potential future disaster.

i hope he is success & we have a great season next yr. like anyone ill judge ruben selles on the pitch. if it is half as good wilder era was. we will be just fine

im not going to praise or be critical & try to predict the future. ive learnt my lesson.
  • in 2021 i was hugely against hecky & called him the typical cheap option, he got us promotion & fa cup semi final
  • i thought the appointment of gareth southgate, was a disgrace & he became greatest england manager since sir alf ramsey
as someone else said. if we appointed a manager who was sacked after 16 games at leeds & was disliked by hiberian fans, sacked after 6 months. their would be uproar & that man was paul heckingbottom

This is a really insightful read on Selles' upbringing in football and his first full season at Reading. Makes for an exciting season looking at his philosophy imo!

Used "massive" and over-exaggerated crowd numbers. Mmmm 🤔🤣

Rodley you have no idea how much firepower the board have and how much they are able to invest. There's some seriously wealthy individuals amongst them. This is not the two bob prince who had run out of money. The fact they spent 10m on Cannon says to me it's not a shot or bust financial situation

Not sure you understand the situation.
What relevance is the wealth of the wealth of the owners. Barnsley have some of the richest owners in the entire EFL….they hardly spend.

Wealthy owners can’t spend what they want….because they are restricted by FFP rules.
There’s a rolling period of 3 years, so you can choose 1 season to go for it and deliberately over spend
But that means….to stay within FFP massive cuts would be required to stay within the rules and prevent a points deduction.

I'm astounded at the reaction to fist of all wilders sacking and secondly to this appointment

I just thought we were all on the same page

All I've heard from blades fans all season was moans and complaints about the style of play ,the players
The results and the myopic blades way bollox so I assumed every one wanted a change

As for this guy selles although I wouldn't compare records ( one is at the end of his career ,one at the start ) this is a guy I hoped we would go after at some point if we needed a new manager ,he reminds me of coberan who I thought was the best coach in the championship bar none
For once we have gone in early on someone and got in on the ground floor on someone who people who k ow a lot more than me thinks has tte potential to be an elite manager

Ive seen very little of him but what I have seen impreses me and I'd had enough of watching that cobbled together team passing it sideways and backwards then running out of steam after an hour .

Great squad with some real individual talent but while everyone else with Premier league aspirations is looking at pace power and athleticism we didn't seem that Interested in anything other than being British and having mentality which we also sadly lacked when the chips were down

I look forward to finally catching up with the modern game that had been slowly leaving us behind
Brilliant post

The rest of the division manage, and the parachute payments teams almost always go straight back up.

There’s a reason every other club moans about parachute payments every time we beat them.
Do they mention parachute payments when they beat us? I’m guessing not…
