After reading the thread about AI suggesting who we should sign in the summer, I thought I would ask Google Gemini to suggest their all-star Blades team. Do you agree/disagree, who would you add and leave off?

Creating a Sheffield United all-star team from ex-players is a fantastic idea, pulling from their rich history. It's tough to narrow it down, as the Blades have had so many legends. Here's a team combining players from different eras, balancing defensive solidity with attacking flair, using a classic 4-4-2 formation:

Sheffield United All-Star XI (4-4-2)

Goalkeeper:

  • Alan Hodgkinson: A true legend and long-serving goalkeeper (1954-1971), known for his incredible shot-stopping and longevity.
Defenders:

  • Right-Back: Len Badger: A stalwart for 14 seasons (1962-1976), known for his consistency and reliability.
  • Centre-Back: Joe Shaw (Captain): "Captain Fantastic" (1944-1966) holds the record for most appearances. A commanding presence and a true one-club man.
  • Centre-Back: Chris Morgan: A modern-day icon (2003-2012, 2013-2015), known for his immense passion, leadership, and no-nonsense defending.
  • Left-Back: Eddie Colquhoun: A Scottish international (1968-1978), a tenacious and combative defender who epitomised the Blades spirit.
Midfielders:

  • Right-Midfield: Alan Woodward: "The Goal Machine" (1964-1978), a winger renowned for his thunderous right foot, goal-scoring ability, and set-piece mastery.
  • Central Midfield: Tony Currie: Widely regarded as Sheffield United's greatest ever player (1968-1976). A creative genius, playmaker, and entertainer who could turn a game on its head.
  • Central Midfield: Phil Jagielka: Versatile and committed (2000-2007, 2019-2021), he excelled in both midfield and defence, a true academy product who embodied the club's spirit.
  • Left-Midfield: Dane Whitehouse: A one-club man (1989-2000), known for his tireless work rate, skill, and commitment on the left flank.
Forwards:

  • Striker: Keith Edwards: A prolific goalscorer across two spells (1975-1978, 1981-1986), lethal in the box and a fan favourite.
  • Striker: Billy Sharp: The modern-day hero (2004-2005, 2007-2010, 2015-2023), captain, and record goalscorer in the modern era, embodying the "one of our own" spirit.
Substitutes / Honorable Mentions:

  • Paddy Kenny (Goalkeeper)
  • Harry Maguire (Defender)
  • Chris Basham (Defender/Midfielder - modern legend for versatility)
  • Michael Tonge (Midfielder)
  • Brian Deane (Striker - scored the first Premier League goal)
  • Jimmy Hagan (Forward - legendary goalscorer from earlier eras)
This team offers a blend of steel, creativity, and goal-scoring prowess that would be a formidable force on any pitch, representing the best of Sheffield United's past.

Where's Grbic?!

As much as I like Paddy not sure I would pick him over Brown, Tracey or Kelly.

I don’t think Billy Sharp and Keith Edward’s would work together.

How about Mick Jones and Alan Birchenall or Brian Dene and Tony Agana.

Also not sure on Eddie Colquhoun as a left back.

I like this. Another way of doing it would be to come up with your dream XI, input it into AI and see how they suggest they would get on.

I also think a big part of this is the idea of what formation and style of play.

A terrible X1! Where are Ernest Needham, Billy Gillespie, Fred Tunstall, Jimmy Dunne and Jimmy Hagan?

Brian Deane is ahead of Keith Edwards and Billy Sharp.

Eddie Colquhoun at left back? Give me strength!

We shouldn’t be playing 4-4-2 either, given that during our objectively most successful years we’d have been using Half Backs and five forwards…

All these legends miss out, but Morgan is in and Paddy Kenny makes the bench 🤣🤣!

No way is Morgan one of our 2 best ever centre backs! Depends on how u r picking this doesn't it. Harry M played for England many times as did Jags and they are both on a different level. If length of tenure isn't important then JOC was way better than him too.

Me and my mates did this on Saturday for a ‘premier league team of the season’ but each player was only allowed to be picked by one team and there was 8 of us so wasn’t easy if you had 8th choice left back…

Anyway, AI decided my team was the best…

Maybe AI is rubbish after all

You have to share your team now so we can all use this as a basis to trust AI going forward! 🤣

Before you slate this team…

We could only use a club once.
Each player was only allowed to be picked by one team.
We had a rotation for who got ‘first pick’ for each position on the pitch so some of the obviously better players had already gone before it got to my turn (explains the Dibling pick a little bit).
Bladey bladeness meant I was always getting Ndiaye in and I also picked Hendo which to be fair both were decent picks.
I’d had somewhere between 7 and 9 pints at this point.

Right, mitigation out of the way, here’s the team…

He is a proper team.
Hodgkinson.Badger.. Hemsley.Flynn Colquhoun..Hockey .Woodward.Salmons.Dearden.Currie. Reece.Sub Scullian.

I have picked the Legendary 1970-1972 team. managed by John Harris.

I had the privilege of watching from The Kop.
Nay, mind this AI rubbish, whatever that is.

Powell better than Flynn

Wouldn't mind watching that side!

In that original side, Browny would be ahead of Jags as a midfielder. So would Salmons.

Not sure how I would squeeze in one of my all time favourite Blades players ….. Gilbert Ivor Reece.

An All-star Blades 11 with not a single player who actually won anything...

Sounds about right.

Not sure what Gemini is up to but to not include any players from when we were genuinely the best team in England and actually won something, does seem a bit odd.

UTB.

I think that that the chosen team highlights the limitations and flaws of AI as compared to that of first hand observations and contemporary reports .

I feel unable to comment on players who I never saw , but it does appear that Ernest Needham was one of the finest players not only that we ever had but in English football at the time , and should by definition be automatically included.

Of the ones I have seen , I can only agree with four of the selections which are those of Len Badger , Alan Woodward , Tony Currie and the peerless Joe Shaw .

The idea of Eddie Colquhoun playing at left back will probably cause me to have nightmares and that of Keith Edwards and Billy Sharp being our best ever two man strike force is plainly ludicrous , even though I have great admiration for both.

On the other hand , I would say that the idea that this could be that of Brian Deane and Doc Pace is one that I would love to have seen and even the thought of it is not one which is good for my blood pressure ….
