If more of our £10 million to £20 million signings played on a par with their price tag we'd be a very different proposition and probably have taken it to the wire this season. But it's very rare they do play up to their price tag under Wilder. Hamer the exception so far. Berge too in years gone by.

So which managers have got the right pedigree in this department and are realistic?

Steve Cooper's hit rate is too poor imo.

It's not worth having this discussion without the necessary financial context.

I'm sure the top managers have a fantastic hit rate with £20mill players because players want to play for top clubs and receive top wages.

We went for Watkins and Maupay but had to settle for McBurnie. Everyone can spot the top targets, but only a few can attract them. Any Sheffield United manager in the PL will be massively constrained in this way, and the same will apply to similar clubs who get promoted.

Do you think any manager in the championship is more savvy than Wilder with money?

It’s not just the responsibility of the manager in any sane football club. Let’s get the structure right and we’ll not have to worry about Wilder signing more expensive failures.

I'd trust wilder if I gave him £5 in a car boot sale to unearth a vintage patek philippe.

However I wouldn't trust him with £1,000 and would fully expect him to bring me back a casino or lucky lucky rolex for the full £1k then telling me it has potential and so I should keep wearing it regardless what anyone says.

I guess we can expand the question to include quality "director of football" types with good pedigree too. Surely we're an attractive move to some that have shown promise.

I don’t tend to follow what other teams spend so couldn’t tell you who is any good at spending money. I just know Brewster and Cannon seem like expensive mistakes

Heckingbottom signed Hamer, not Wilder. As it is, trusting Wilder with a transfer budget is like asking Jimmy Savile to look after your kids. Wilder was at his best wheeler dealing with no money in League 1, which is where he should be managing.

The problem worh DoF is that if he fucks up, then the manager pays for it.

Or do you end up firing a good manager because the recruitment by someone else is poor. Or is the recruitment correct and the manager failed to get the best out of them.

Personally I’d rather an excellent scouting department. I’ve no interest in a guy who will make decisions and then have someone else accountable for their success or failure.

The issue is that is how almost all big businesses work, they have a recruitment department and a manager and the manager works with what they are given, football is gradually becoming like this, the days of managers ruling the roost and having the final say on signings and wages like clough, fergie are a thing of the past

Managers don't really spend money. Clubs do. This ain't Football Manager. I don't think Wilder/Cooper are ringing up other teams and negotiating fees.

Improving our scouting process has to be the blueprint for how we go forward, its how smaller clubs are able to build themselves up and compete at the top table. Wilder can spot a good player, and his hit rate is very good with some pretty high profile misses along the way as well. We need a process that can identify players from across the world and hopefully one which can identify the key attributes we need to fit the system we play. It doesn't happen overnight and has significant costs to set up and run, so it needs real commitment and stability at a club. There have been some noises from the new owners that hint they may be interested in moving in this direction, but i'm also worried that they might think they can just use Gemini to the same ends.
