An inevitable consequence of our recent run of success will be the rest of the football world examining how it's been achieved.

Of course NC's stock has risen. Generally he was regarded as unfortunate to lose his job at Derby where most thought he had done well on limited budgets. He had previously done very well at Burton.

For him to pick up a fairly significant new job within a month reflects his reputation at that time. For him to achieve what he has already, even without any real follow through from now on will make a number of club chairmen think they'd like some of that, no doubt about it.

Should we worry about that? Maybe, but we do know that NC has regarded his jobs as long term projects in the past. We also know he has basically got everything he could have wished for at Bramall Lane - his own complete coaching team, his brother as Chief Scout and his old tried and tested Managing Director who he worked with at Derby.

In addition he seem as to have struck a good relationship with Morgan and he must sense "the love" and the ambition of the fans and the undoubted potential of the club should he get it moving.

Added to all that there is the Prince who has the right amount of cash available when needed at each step up the ladder; that has to be a crucial factor. KM is still in there to oversee the transition and some will regard that as a minus point, but remember NC is a down to earth Derbyshire lad with a socialist upbringing and perhaps the presence of a true Blade will reassure him at this stage. Maybe not for him the Cardiff type situation, not at first anyway.

I've got everything crossed that NC sees a total rebuild project here, much of the order his dad achieved twice. Therefore he might have his heart set on The Full Monty with United, not some brief success and on to a bigger job within months. Let's all hope so.

Another consequence will be the attention our players are attracting, in particular Maguire, Scougall, Baxter. With the Prince's money we just might be able to hold on that bit longer but only if we go up to the Championship pretty soon. Thing is, with the prospect of exciting times ahead players are more likely to be more patient with the club. Players belief in their manager means so much I'm sure. Why sit on the bench elsewhere for a bit more money. Perhaps I'm dreaming and indeed getting ahead of myself but when United's resurrection comes it will be like that, I imagine.
With the Prince's money we may be able to attract better players, particularly if the club gets on the upward momentum and NC's stock rises even more. Such as Brayford becomes a realistic prospect, I imagine.

I've been considering the same thing, but we've got a lot going for us, most of which you pointed out above.

I would suggest that NC is very much a "local" lad, with his family settled, and him comfortable with the commute. (I did it the other way around for a number of years).

He, as you state, has a substantial backing to emulate and possibly better his dad's achievements.

He'll also know the pitfalls of moving to a "big" club, aka his dad and that "Damned United"

I believe that they only thing to drag him away would be a call to the England job, but that's a few years into the future.

I agree with most of your comments and certainly with the sentiment here but I have one observation, which may or may not be an issue.
I have yet to see any evidence to support the presumption that "the Prince" has any money of substance that he is prepared to invest in the playing staff at SUFC.
I hope that my concerns are proved to be wrong, but we've been here before with "people" who are "going" to invest in players.
Well done Nigel though, for coaxing performances out of "some" players who are League 2 standard.
UTB & FTP

There are very few clubs outside the Premiership of our "size" or potential. I can't see Clough going anywhere any time soon.

When Nigel Clough first came to us I met his brother Simon in his newsagents in Nottingham. One of his main comments was that they were in it for the long haul. He pointed out the length of time that hhey had been at burton and derby. I also know that Nigel felt he hadn't finished what he had started at Derby.
So, hope that answers your question.

and I really hope that he DOESN'T WANT to finish the job at Derby...............

NC will end up one day doing what his dad never did - manage England.

Wouldn't mind as long as he had just celebrated his 10 years of SUFC being in the Premier League!

One can dream...........

UTB

I think most factors are in our favour: he's doesn't want to move his family and the Lane is close enough to commute. He wants a long term project to build a club. He likes a club with a good youth structure.

He doesn't need to be here earning a living, I'm pretty sure he must be a millionaire. He's here because he wants to be here. He loves football and he thinks him and his support team can achieve things with SUFC.

Long may it continue.

There's also the fact that McLaren is doing much better than him...

get your money on with the bookies now, while the price is right, because one day he will be " the best manager England ever add" and that's no joke

Well, when was cloughy ever challenging for promotion to the premier league?
It is rarely relevant what a player, manager or indeed any new person in any job does in the first few weeks.

It's the long term that matters.

As for challenging to for the Prem, May I suggest that it would have been impossible for McLaren if a good base hadn't been established.

Controversially, personally I think NC inherited a capable squad too, but he has improved it no end. All credit to him.

Derby are unlikely to go up and McLaren will develop his own squad for next season - then judge. I think he will fail, but that's just opinion.

United are unlikely to go up t his season, how dare we even think of it? Next season, record points tally!

I'm not sure of the logic that NC is doing a great job but it's too early to judge McLaren...

Well said. That's the problem reading two threads alternately. Nevertheless it teaches us some times and that's the point of forums.

The real truth is that we blades need to believe, we will clutch at any positives after all these years of disappointment and also have a feeling in our bones.

Personally I would not have welcomed McLaren at our place, not at all.

Another factor in the scenario was the immediacy of McLarens success with Derby. It was there for him to take forward.

As we all know, NC had a lot to sort out and it took him weeks and right to the end of the January transfer window before evident improvements were seen. The way he identified strengths and weaknesses, good team players and bad, viable transfer targets etc was so encouraging for the future.

We live in hope.

FMPOV Nigel has steadied the ship. On reflection he has done more. He has provided stability which is so important. How many of us would have had the balls to shake up team selection in the way that he has? Not I.

We now know, and every player at the club is aware that, their efforts in training could give them an unexpected place in the starting eleven. Under previous managers Weir Wilson et al this was not so. Long may Nigel confuse us with his selections. Of course not all will come off. We may get a thumping some time but I have a feeling that all the first teamers are on their toes, with Tel, Reedy Diego and the like ready to bust a gut for the cause if called upon

Looks like the sacking had the desired effect then
1 defeat, even to the most hated rival by one goal is hardly the basis for his removal , the squad he left has hardly changed a bit, but wont complain its been our gain their loss
Liverpool should have sacked Brendan Rogers for losing at Hull on that basis

Perhaps it was more to do with the fact that he'd lost 3 games in eight days.....

Under clough, derby were never looking likely to get promoted at any point during his reign.

true fans know the truth
he saved them from oblivion and built up a challenging squad on peanuts

The last paragraph is enlightening.

The way the team is currently playing, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to hope that we will remain within touching distance of the play-offs this season, although realistically, the squad is perhaps a touch light to crack the top six. But with the exception of Hughes, they are an unhyped lot, so we have every chance of keeping the group together for next year and hopefully adding a little more quality in the summer.
