I had just been re-reading the thread on memes. I still don’t understand all this new-fangled technical language.

The "Knickerbockered Heroes" got a mention by Looker-On in his Sheffield Daily Telegraph piece from Monday, April 24, 1893

"Cricket cannot surely be now called an intruder, and with the stowing away of the football, Yorkshire sportmen will turn to the bat and ball, and will soon become as keen in their interest over the summer pastime as they have been over the winter game. That's a certainty. The knickerbockered heroes will be forgotten while the battle of the shires is in progress, and the figure that our county eleven are likely to cut in their various engagements will be watched with an eagerness which only an Englishman can understand."
