Reasons to be Cheerful

History and records don't guarantee anything in football.

If it did, Man United wouldn't be 12+ years without a PL title, as historically they have won more PL titles than anyone else.

We've been unsuccessful in 9 previous playoff campaigns, that doesn't mean we'll never win a playoff final, even if history suggests otherwise.

History is nice in football, but it doesn't guarantee anything.

I've said it since early in the season - you can't build a side that can sustain PL existence in 2 windows. 3, maybe, with a Florist style spunking, but I think 5 windows is the sweet spot. Perversely, after last night, I've been quite upbeat and philosophical about promotion. If we do it, and I think CWAK have the best chance of all the managers that have tried to get us up via playoffs, so be it. Take the PL money and run, again. But, if another season in the Champ is our future, I'm okay with that. I like winning more football games in a season than I can count on one hand and I think after another 3 windows, we'll be MUCH better equipped to stay up next time.

Really can't be arsed for the inevitable social media bullshit if we don't sell 10 million tickets for the playoffs.

It's only football and the playoffs are wide open. Even playing poorly they are winnable. Also, it's nearly the summer
And I suppose we get somewhat an extended season, for all the negativity around this place (be it justifiable or not) there's a chance here for a load of us to witness something brilliant. Winning a play off would not only be an amazing result we get to witness a "curse" being broken... Similarly if we lose I am gonna find the meltdowns on here quite funny anyway.

Yesterday I didn't get chance to watch the match or even check the result, I spent a day in Wales with the missus and I only knew we were in the play offs when I was driving home and I saw a message from a mate saying so, I didn't even think about the football, it was a nice break from listening to the negativity and misery round here.

As you say, almost summer too and it could be far worse. We could be in the sort of position those across the city are. Cheer up, Prem or not, United will still be here next season :)

One year ago. A few days after being embarrassed 5-0 by champions Leicester, a certain Tyrese Campbell hammers the ball low past Alex McCarthy to seal Southampton's third loss in a row and cementing them in a play-off battle. Thought it'd be interesting to hear what fans thought about their chances at the time:

"Nice of the lads to get us mentally prepared for a semi final knockout in the playoffs."

"It's quite pathetic that this team has already given up. They still have a chance of promotion but they are such massive bottlers, they just choke and cry. No fight."

"I'm not one to overreact, but I think we need to sack the board, manager and all the players."

"This team have been on a downward spiral for the last 10-12 games. They are out of ideas, low on confidence , and are as error prone as usual with a fragile mentality."

Just goes to show. No matter how much we feel like we've bottled it, we too have the chance to be one of the worst premier league teams of all time next year.

My first away game of the season yesterday. It was a decent day out, decent enough performance.

Can I 'like' and 'chuckle' at the same time, please.

I hope anyone that's resigned to losing in the playoffs just stays away. The lane doesn't need your negativity
Someone else who doesn't seem to understand that negativity expressed on a message board, an arena for allowing fans to express opinions and emotions, does not translate to negativity expressed in the stadium, an arena for allowing fans to support their team.

For those of us who feel negatively about the play offs, a message board such as this, which affords us the opportunity to get that negativity off our chests online, is precisely the thing that ensures that we don't take that negativity into the stadium with us.

And, yes, I shall be attending the play offs, where my play off negativity will be in abeyance, as I cheer, sing, and shout encouragement to support the team, as I always do.

Clearly that's fine, but there's plenty chucking their toys out the pram completely to the point they're saying there's no point going to Wembley if we get there etc. They need to stay home

This is how I'm choosing to see it. Ultimately if we go up we're almost certainly coming back down! So we may as well go up in the most exciting fashion! Dont get me wrong, I wanted us to go up top two but all season I've been battling the fact that it does feel almost pointless to go up in a way which is why I think the atmosphere at the Lane is not electric as it was in 2019 when we knew we had something special and the PL wasn't as closed as it is now.

It's like doing an extensive training course for a new job and told you've got the job at the end of it all only to find out when you get it you detest your boss, you hate all your colleagues, you're working every hour on God's earth and still the crappest member of the workforce with your colleagues mocking you from the minute you joined saying things like "how did you get the job, you're the worst employee we've ever had" and in the end you're joyful to be sacked!

And to think we were founding members of it all! But the alternative is to end up like those poor sods like Stoke and Wednesday, the latter's greatest achievement over the last 25 years is winning promotion out of League One!

I’m positive about the play offs obviously promotion is the aim only down side is we’ll be lumbered with Wilder for a least another six months

Well put.
A hell of a lot of efl clubs would give there Nan to be in our position.
Sit back and try to enjoy the ride.

We could have anyone in charge next season and they'd not be able to keep us up because one transfer window is never enough to bridge the gap.

Fair enough you don't rate Wilder but in my view we're only where we are because of Wilder. The budget we had last summer was much smaller than Burnley and Leeds, that's a fact. Even with January spending our squad is much cheaper than theirs, especially Leeds. I am frustrated at the three losses in a week but we'd probably still needed to get a result at Burnley and that would have been very difficult regardless.

Remember how it worked out with Slav as an alternative to Wilder. Wilder gets this club, the fans, and his record with us deserves praise; in my view.

As much as I REALLY HATE the play offs.. two of my favourite nights as a Blade we’re play off semi final 2nd legs… Ipswich away and Forest home. Absolutely insane matches and emotions. I’ll never forget those nights.

And then we lost the finals. Obviously.
I well remember coming out of Portman Road and three Blades fans tried to take the piss thinking I was an Ipswich fan. I enjoyed explaining to them that I had been going to BL before they were even born. I got a “sorry mate” reply. In the game itself we were battered and our goalie was fantastic. We didn’t win the final alas.

We aren't up yet! We are,the next strongest after L..ds & Burnley we should be favourites to win p/offs, but not up yet. Slav was shafted by the Prince saying he would be backed and he wasn't so was left with the dross after wilder left, Hecky taking over
