Burnley and Leeds are just better

Set aside the injuries we’ve had to Blaster and Souttar, both Burnley and Leeds are better teams than us and that’s looked the case when we played them. Deep down we all know that and when we’ve played them they’ve had an extra gear and extra quality. There’s no shame in that and it’s just caught up with us.

The reality is when they went up they strengthened and moved their squads on again, and we had a year where didn’t strengthen at all. The result is we look a cycle behind them in the promotion / relegation circuit we now inhabit.

Time now for cool heads, time to rest the young players who look burnt out (Peck, Burrows, etc) and critically time for management to work out how we recapture our Coventry form and win the playoffs.

It’s done now and we’ve had enough self-flagellation to last us a lifetime this last week. A management change won’t happen obviously, any rational mind can see that, so on we go and UTB
 

Look at the games lost and GD columns and it is quite telling, if we finish 3rd so be it. A shame about the -2 especially if it ends up being what separates us from those clubs but ultimately they've been a notch higher than us all season when we've won some really poor games to keep pace.

I want to appeal to all Blades right now wetting the bed - the season is not over and promotion is salvageable albeit via the playoffs. We are in a funk right now but this patch of form has come as the fat lady warms up, she's not singing yet. We can go into the playoffs recharged and reset, in better form and with the mindset for it, and I think there's only one team we can really fear in them. The low point is now.
 
Yep. And it's been obvious all season

Leeds are the best team, but Burnley deserve to win the league
 
The problem is, Coventry, Boro and Bristol City will all brush us aside over 2 legs and then we have no chance in a 1 off game against anyone at Wembley if we stumble through, we don’t have the mentality for it. Losing to 3 shit teams in a week proves that.

"Brush us aside" when we've beaten all 3 on aggregate this season?

Sunderland at Wembley though, different story. We'd set up too defensively and terrifiedly
 
I'm not going to the games, and to be honest I've not seen so many of the games this season via streaming (highlights yes, full games no), but man alive, it just feels like we're imploding at the worst possible time.

2 of those games were our best performances of the season by some way, based on the last 3 performances I have no confidence we can repeat anything like those performances. The manager has bottled it, the players have bottled it and for all the bollocks he spouts about ‘culture’, we have a losing mentality.

We said the "Coventry form" thing after Bristol City, it didn't happen. We said it after Oxford away. It didn't happen. We said it against Boro and Coventry and it's didn't happen.

If you can't get your team to click and fire on an cylinders, playing to their potential and to their best after 42 games, then it's not going to happen now.

So it's either that the players we have just aren't that good and Wilder is getting all he can out of them, or it's a case that the players are good and are being held back by the manager and his methods.

I personally think some of our players are average and over rated by our fans, but I've also seen our best players not performing to their best, so I'm personally of the latter opinion.

We’re the third best team in the league, that can’t be disputed.

Sensible post and I don't think its particularly close quality wise. 83 points from 42 games for a team with that much change over the summer is good whichever way you cut it. The issue is form and confidence rock bottom so these next 4 games are really important to regroup. In that sense I'm glad its clear at this stage rather than waiting until the final day or two.
Please at least try Holding and see how it goes.

As much as I don't want to admit defeat to Leeds, there's no shame in admitting that they both have better squads and are having better seasons.

Whoever finished 3rd was always going to be disappointed in the end, even if you take out our recent results and performances it was always going to hurt if we finished 3rd.

I would say we're equal with Sunderland when you look at everything, we've beaten each other once each, our squad is just as good as there's as there are players from both clubs who could get in each others teams.

As for Coventry, WBA, Bristol City and Middlesbrough, I'm not too worried about them as we have enough to beat any of them, so long as we turn up and put a performance in when required.

If there's one playoff chasing side that I'm nervous about, it's Millwall as if they get 6th in the end, they'll be bang in form and play the style of football that is best suited for the playoffs.
 
I always felt we’d finish 3rd such is the quality of the competition we were up against who will both finish on 90+ points. Shame we put ourselves in such a great position and absolutely shat it but at least we’ve got a month to wrap our heads round it and prepare for playoffs.

I think I'd be more concerned about WBA. We've failed to beat them this season IIRC, and I've always thought of Tony Mowbray is underrated.
 
I don't think Burnley have a better team than us. I don't think there's much in it. They have a better defence but player for player it's quite equal. They have a better manager, but I've watched them quite a bit recently and they've regularly struggled to create chances. Like we have. I also thought Norwich caused their defence a lot of issues last night, so it's hardly impenetrable. Teams just don't attack them. Leeds do have a better squad of players but they're also a little flaky.
 
It would have been interesting if Arblaster had been fit all season and likewise Souttar.

It’s very unfortunate to lose a 20m midfielder and a 15m defender. Not many cope with that. Leeds losing Dan James would have been a hammer blow for the entire season.

The shame about Arblaster is that he was looking like a goalscorer too. Peck hasn’t quite managed that yet. An extra 8 goals from midfield and double the amount of clean sheets since Souttar was injured may well have given us the points to be top two.

I feel strangely relaxed now. The top three have been miles better than the rest. So perhaps we can win the Play Offs. Just be a little sensible with rotation and with suspensions now. If Anel or Hamer get close then I’d be taking them out of the firing line. Losing then would be a disaster.

I’d agree with that. When we played Leeds at home it was one of our best performances, then Leeds moved through the gears and we couldn’t get close to them.

It’s better it is done now and we can regroup. I’d personally like to see Holding get the shirt from Robbo, JRS in for BBD and more of One off the bench rather than Cannon.
 
They are better sides, fair play to them.
Leeds play free flowing attacking football and Burnley are a better version of us.

Congrats to them.

Now let's remember we weren't a million miles off them and are a million miles better than the rest.
We can win the play-offs if we sort our heads out (that has to start with Wilder).

Let's stop feeling sorry for ourselves and get after it.

Well the gap is 5 points, I guess you could argue it ought to be 2 or 3. But it’s not a large gap as it stands.

The gap should be two or three in our favour considering who we've just played our last three games against

Typical United, they get to the top of the League and their mentality of second being good enough gives them all a chance to kick back and have a day off at Oxford

Wilder's brain goes all weird again, but instead of blaming himself and his half arsed players he blames the fans.

Now the rot has well and truly set in

True, but they've been dropping points quite frequently in the last few weeks.

I know they were winning today last time I checked their score but not sure what the result was in the end.

Nice whataboutery and in theory I don't disagree.

However, it's game 40 of the season and we look as disjointed as unfit as we did in game one v Preston.

As good as Burnley and Leeds are, there's no excuses for the ineptitude and lack of application in the past week and the fact that we have 4 of the best players in the division in Peck, Rak Sakhi, Hamer and O'Hare, yet they look like they've never played together before....
 
We were served up three genuinely easy games on the back of a hard test against high flying Coventry..

We pissed on them, and I dared to dream about winning the league..

We've clicked at the right time, finally and we can win the fuker,not finish 2nd win it..

They always let you down..
