Reading the runes, considering the trajectory of the last few years and taking account of the insanity of Chansiri there is certainly a chance that this could happen. I’m not entirely sure how I would feel about that.

On the one hand, the rivalry has been a part of my life for over 50 years, and I’ve loved the times like now when we are undisputed top dogs.

On the other hand, and as Wilder pointed out a few weeks ago, the pendulum always swings, and my enjoyment of the present moment is, only slightly, tempered by that knowledge.

Then there’s the fact that being the only club in a football mad city of this size would give us the opportunity, over time and as generational loyalties wane, of truly establishing ourselves at a level above.

Of course, it might not happen, but there is a chance that it might. How would folks feel about it if it did?

I suppose a lot of that is down to the same discussion about what people want to happen to the pigs.
For me, I wouldn't want the actual one club city thing. The rivalry and it being meaningful and having some jeopardy when we play them is a huge bit of excitement. If they went to Hallam FC size, or closed entirely, that would be a negative to me.
Without the passion and the roller coaster of emotions football loses its biggest thrill imo.

I would love us to be a one club city (obviously Blades only) despite the fact that I do NOT even hate having the rivalry.

Unfortunately I don't think it will ever happen though being realistic. I can't ever see a medium sized club like ours completely going out of business and even if they did, they'd rise through towards the upper end of the pyramid with the resulting and inevitable phoenix club.

Becoming our Notts County/Bristol Rovers/Port Vale - obviously this is much more of a possibility but I still wouldn't bank on it at all.

Nah, worst comes to worst for them and they go into admin someone will pick them up as a League one club for a knock down price.

The dream scenario for me is they become something like Notts County to our Notts Forest where they grub around the lower leagues and we never play them.

You only need to look at Leeds fans to see the danger of being a one club city. So no, I wouldn't want to see the back of them altogether.

Meanwhile, their current fans are never going to become our supporters. This means even if they go under, it'll be 25 years of bitter fans rambling about Hirsty, Waddle, John Harkes goal, Boxing Day, Spora Luxembourg, etc, while their club as a force in British football becomes an increasingly distant memory.

Basically no different to today, then.

They’re too big a club to be forgotten about. I know we take the piss, but they’re hardly Bury, Bradford PA or Macclesfield.

It would take a minimum of 3 generations for them to be completely insignificant that we are claiming 90/95% of fans in this city.

Never happen. Not in a future that any of us can see anyway.

Be far too much opposition to it and many would look to create phoenix clubs.

I'd hate it.

I hate Wednesday like everybody else, but so much of our identity is wrapped into the rivalry. The scenes after the derby with Wilder in the pub are iconic and will live on forever in our minds.

It would be great for the city if both clubs were in the PL, but I'm not sure how I would feel about it.

Not sure, tbh. Much as I dislike them, I enjoy the rivalry. I also have friends of that persuasion who are actually decent people.

Do we really want to be one of those clubs with no proper rivalry.

So, although I'm enjoying their current plight, it may be case of being careful what you wish for.
I'm the exact opposite..,...Fuck em

I want what’s best for Sheffield United and if Wednesday slip down the divisions or go out of business, that’s best for United.

I want us to compete with the best in the country and Europe, anything which will help that become a reality is what we should all want.

Hating them is as much a part of being a blade as singing the greasy chip butty on a match day.

Some of the funniest posts on this forum are on the Wendesday thread.

As much as I want them to descend into obscurity and be plying their trade in the Northern Premier Division, without a proper rivalry we’d end up like those weirdo Cov fans who sprout up on here trying to create a rivalry over some tennis balls…

We should enjoy the current situation while we can.
In 1970/71 we were promoted to division 1 leaving Wednesday in division 2. In 1974/75 we finished 6th only missing a European place on goal average whilst Wednesday were bottom (by several points) of division 2.
I remember thinking that the gap between the clubs was so big that we would always be top dogs.
But as Chris said things change quickly. By 1979/80 we had joined them in Division 3 and they were promoted whilst by 1981/2 we were in division 4.
I don't want Wednesday to disappear, they are a constant source of entertainment to me. I love when they win how blue and white shirts abound in Meadowhall and Crystal Peaks only for them to disappear again when they lose the next 2 games. When they lose I always listen to Praise and Grumble to hear them squealing on the radio.
They really are the pigs who keep on giving.

If United ceased to exist I wouldn’t swap my allegiance to Wednesday. I suspect most Wednesday fans wouldn’t swap to us either. Maybe in a couple of generations and if we are an established Premier League club we may attract some, but it will be a long, long time before we are truly a one club city.

I wonder if CoH have got a contingency scenario in the event of Wednesday being wound up ala Bury, do we accelerate plans to invest in the expansion of BDTBL to 50k to make the most of the business opportunity!

Bit harsh on Notts County considering they have David McGoldrick...

Indeed, but we’d be guaranteed to pick up any floating fans if they were out the picture.

One club city ?
Can't see Sheffield FC or Hallam folding anytime soon .
Seriously it would be weird for the words
🎶 No pig fans in town , no Hillsborough to sadden my eyes ..... to actually be true .

It won't happen but if they rocked around L1 or L2 for 10 years they may finally get to know thier place...but I doubt that too.
"We took 3000 to Salford City "

A couple of seasons in the National League for them would be nice though.

As others have said, I actually wouldn't want them to cease to exist entirely. The rivalry is a huge part of being a fan of either side (though the cretins who are "hated weds first, love utd 2nd" and their counterparts across the city can get to fuck) and nothing really compares to beating them, other than beating them twice in a season ;)

I'd happily see them grubbing around the lower echelons of league 2 or even the national league, with very occasional cup ties in which our 2nd string paste their first team comfortably, but not to go out of business entirely.

Plus I've got mates who are of the reasonable ilk as far as pigs go, and I would be genuinely heartbroken for them if the club they've supported their whole lives was just ripped away from them via the actions of a mental case Thai bloke with delusions of grandeur (though on that point at least he does fit right in with them I suppose).
