..after the euphoria of Tuesday its now time to turn our attention to what Really matters.

A six pointer at the bottom of the 3rd tier is not what many want to think about but personnaly it tainted any feeling of pleasure at the Fulham result. I am not a big fan of the Cup anyway and whilst it was good to get any sort of win we need to forget about it and concentrate on the next two games, both at home, and a minumum of four points required (I'd like to say six points with the best will in the world I can't see us beating Brentford)

Shrews at home is an absolute must, except no excuses, WIN.

Really? I think you need to take up a different hobby mate.
I would rather have gone out to Cambridge and be challenging for promotion, than be in the fifth round and staring at relegation. We aren't going to win the cup so it means little to me.

Thinking rationally your right, but if I was thinking rationally I'd have stopped supporting this club years ago.

Clough didn't agree with you, neither did the 2000 blades who travelled to Fulham on a wet Tuesday and the 6000 that meandered down to villa.

Cloughs comment when asked post match about the romance of the cup

"It's Brilliant, it's brilliant. It's special"

And on the next round:

"We don't mind amybody, we'll look forward to another cup game at Bramall lane, with those supporters"

Fair play to Clough, fair play to those there, personally I would have swapped it for three points at Crewe the previous weekend.

I think everyone understands that and agrees that the league is very important. I really, really hope that we manage to pick up at least 4 points from the next two league games....but...

Next Saturday we'll be entertaining forest at home in the cup again. This forum has been alive again in the last few weeks with Blades loving the games, the challenges of facing sides in the top divisions, positivity and enjoyment of games. We've gone to two premier league grounds with the same group of players that couldn't muster up the spirit at Crewe and we've beaten them. We can pick the bones out of why we managed to beat the premier league sides and not the sides at the bottom of the 3rd tier, yet sometimes it's nice to have a break from the monotony of the league and just enjoy the cup.

We may stay up this season. Let's hope we do. There's little else to play for this season, but if we can get some excitement by being on the verge of the Quarter finals of the cup then it makes an entirely shite season in a relegation battle in the 3rd tier slightly more bearable.

Cheer up, have a beer and enjoy it whilst it lasts

Take that performance into Saturday & we should come out on top. At the bottom it is often more about confidence than ability, after Tuesday then there should be the confidence at least. The only down side was 120 minutes on a heavy pitch so hopefully the rest of this week has been about recovery and perhaps some shooting practise.

I'm getting a bit fed up of this cup or league debate. Why isn't it possible for us to do well in both? We have done in the past and so have a lot of other clubs. Playing a league game on a Tuesday doesn't mean you're not going to be up to it on a Saturday so why does a cup game?

I appreciate the league form has been poor of late and some may feel it's because of the cup run but I strongly disagree. We're doing well in the cup because we have been forced to play a different way (soak up pressure and counter attack) that we have discovered a knack for. Third division games are totally different because the opposition is constantly pushing and trying to put you under pressure. We don't seem to be dealing with that as well, perhaps because it suits our players less....?

As a team we don't tend to play a very high line, possibly due to our lack of pace through the middle. Hence sitting back and soaking up pressure probably suits us more. Maybe we should try it in the league?

No one is going to confuse you for a little ray of sunshine are they?

We know we are up shit creek in the league, just enjoy the moment in the cup, I Did.

Personally I'm a bit annoyed that the league games are getting in the way of our cup run. We could be in Europe next year with a few more wins!

What's the league giving us this season! Nowt but grief.

And from a fans point of view, the cup game has been excellent value for money for fans - cheap tickets, free away travel, games on TV. The lot.

Absolutely spot on.

I don't know where this idea that the Cup means you can't do well in the league has actually come from, although I suspect Colin trying to deflect any criticism of the Cardiff Cock Up in 2003 has had some effect. Sadly our Woeful Wembley against Burnley who had reached the latter stages of both cups and still fucked us over in the Mediocrity Bowl , didn't seem to register.

You can see what it means to the players and manager to be doing well in the Cup, I can't believe there are fans out there who don't seem to want to enjoy it.
Ah well, takes all sorts . . . . .

When we went up in 1990 we did well in the Cup, and in 1961 our semi final went to a second replay and we still went up.

The thing is we are not doing well in the League are we ?
Beat Villa surrender to Notts County
Draw with Fulham with 10 men dont turn up against Crewe
Beat Fulham away ????? against Shrewsbury

As I have said before the cup run will mean SFA if we are in L2 next season

FFS,

We won't be in League 2 BECAUSE of the Cup run though.

We'll be in League 2 because we were shit pre-Clough and are such a fragile set of characters we can't string more than a couple of decent performances together.
We surrendered out of the League Cup at stage 1, what was our League form around then (fucking awful, it was a rhetorical question)?

We don't like teams who are "up and at 'em", but we'd still have to face them if we'd lost to Colchester in R1.

Anyway, that's my last word on it, enjoy it, moan the fuck about it, your choice. I'm loving it, and I'll be there on Saturday EXPECTING us to produce again.

I was replying to your statement about if we do well in the cup why cant we do well in the League.
Are we doing well in the League ???? Please answer me ............................

There is no excuse for the no shows against Notts County and Crewe yours that we dont like up an at em teams is feeble and weak
I hope Clough doesnt have that mentality

I thought I had.

NO, we are not doing well in the league . IT IS NOT because we are doing well in the Cup.

I'm not making any sort of excuse for our league failings, I'm mortified by them. I just don't happen to think they have anything to do with winning Cup games, Clough made it quite clear he sees no such correlation.

Plenty of time for pre match ale then ;-)

Getting Shrewsbury to have a go at us might be a problem?

After the debacle away to Crewe last week the turn around on tues should work in our favour. Largely outplaying a prem league team on their own patch on tv? Should really help us carry that form into tomorow, here's hoping!

I agree. You need good team spirit and the way the lads were jumping around together after the goal I think we've got it finally.

Possibly yes. The alternative approach is to gradually draw them onto you, if you sit deep for long enough the away side will eventually start to step up naturally and without even realising it. Takes a good, disciplined side to do it though.

The other downside is that a lot of patience is required and moans and groans will inevitably start raining down from the stands. At the moment we're not consistent enough to play between the lines and we don't have a lot of pace either so it's hard to achieve anything by playing a pressing game.

That's the thing with us though, we all thought that beating Villa would have had that effect but for some reason it seemed to leave us completely bereft of confidence, willingness to work and we looked like a team that had been completely stiffed the week before. Always expect the unexpected with us, it's the Blades way I'm afraid.

Personally I think we'll win tomorrow, I really hope we do and I hope we win well. We've shown we can play a bit.
so for fucks sake come on Blades, let's batter these fuckers and not look back.

Recovery indeed. Good job we aren't so called professional footballers in my work then. I would need to rest after 2 hrs and take several days to recover.Poor lads .

I agree with all of that. We're a much better team when we soak up and counter, especially when they're trying to get the ball down and play through us like Villa and Fulham did.

Having said that, no matter where we are in the league, if we set up that way against Shrewsbury at home I fear there would be uproar in the stands whether it's justified or not.

Oh, and by the way, if you're not enjoying the cup run... I'm baffled. Being so shit in the league makes me enjoy the cup run even more! It's great getting ready to watch a game without the horreendous, sinking feeling I now have before every league game. Enjoy life while you can...
