What's that all about then? Don't remember it being part of the usual 'bigger, older, better' drivel in the past, What's the genesis and 'justification' for the latest non-football way of judging a football club?
It's their desperate plea to the bigger boys to come and rescue them. "Remember and revere us, fellow giants of the game. Look how classy we are, just like you"

Still waiting for a call back

I think it's the opposite to reality like how "bad" in the 80s and early 90s meant good because I can't see how a club with their most famous fan being a overweight shirtless orc, having a number of fans arrested or fired from their jobs for various distasteful incidents can ever claim to be classy while their ground is a rusty dirty partly condemned infamous site

This photo from pre match really does sum up how unclassy a place it is

Managers

Ahead of both derbies this year, in the build up, CW has remained calm and level headed. Even praised SWFC fans and manager, referencing the work he's done, the atmosphere at previous derby games.

On the other side, Rohl has petulantly referenced squad value without any thought, suggested we'll be in the play offs, all very emotive and confrontational comments.

Fans

Ahead of both derbies, I believe SUFC fans have been their usual fearful and doom/gloom merchants - fearing the worst, hoping for the best.

On the other hand, SWFC fans have sung songs about the oppositions daughter, screamed vile stuff at the arriving players and staff, thrown fireworks, glasses. coins at players, criticised the opposition manager for holding aloft a shirt to remember a deceased player/friend.

Now - please tell me on which side there is a lack of class.

And people wonder why CW gave the interview he did. I knew we'd win as soon as that video of the players arriving was posted.

Let’s not forget that this is the club that had 3 players sent to prison for a betting scandal and sacked Derek Dooley, a player who had lost his leg playing for them, on Christmas Eve to keep it out of the papers. There has never been anything classy about them.

It's because they have to make something up to feel superior, something that by and large is empirically unquantifiable.

They aren't 'better' than us, as the league table and results show (over several years)

They aren't 'bigger' than us, as the only real way you can measure this is attendances, which despite all their bleating are pretty equal (with us possibly shading it)

So what else do they have for their egos to cling to?

Dilapidated.

Yep, this basically

Never averaged over 30000 in my lifetime ?

Because their manager doesn't sing songs about us after winning a derby.

Well, he might do if he won one 😁
I get the feeling that really, it's specifically about their distaste for Wilder. Such a weird metric to hold yourself to. Feels petty and, ironically, small time.

Has Rohl ever had the respect to call our club by name?
I only ever heard him say 'the opponent,'
This is a lack of class and respect.

Well we'd feel the same way about Megson.

TBF Gary Sinclair never ever mentions their name at Bramall Lane when announcing, just “the opponent”, and I think that’s absolutely fantastic. That said manager is a little bit different.

Rohl will be sore because for all the hype he seemingly can’t win a big game and has been schooled by Wilder twice.

I remember when Jack Charlton was their manager,a pre season friendly was mooted by United, and he turned it down saying that they didn't need the prestige of playing against us.
We had the last laugh on him when we played a pre season friendly at Newcastle when he was there and their fans turned on him after watching it and he resigned shortly after.

Good I don’t want us to become like Fulham etc.

Maybe, but it would be weird if we then went on to characterise our entire club identity based on our dislike of the oppo manager. Obsessed doesn't come close.

Like a lot of stuff they say, it’s a load of bollocks and in fact, quite the opposite.

It's also got a lot to do with them trying to convince themselves that they don't really have a rivalry with United because they are far too superior to stoop to that level.

Personally, I'm here to enjoy the games and I don't give a fuck what other fans think. I find it amusing when United are hated. They are DESPERATE to be respected, liked etc by the bigger boys and they want to look down their snouts at everyone else. The fragility of ego is weird.

Funny though

Never averaged over 30000 in my lifetime ?

Since 1960, that’s the last 65 years
They’ve only averaged 30K twice, in 1967 and 1968.

Even at Championship level……in the 2023 season we averaged 28,746.
That’s the season when the back few rows of the Kop was closed down for a few months restricting our capacity to 30K.
The last time SW had more than 28,746 when outside the top flight is 1952, that’s 73 years ago.

They are one of the few clubs in English football that have never had an average attendance anywhere close to their capacity.

“Class” and “bigger” are just copes for lack of success. Teams like Leeds, Wednesday etc will go on about being “proper” clubs who are “bigger” than Bournemouth, Brighton Brentford etc but I know who’d I’d rather be a fan of in the last 15 years.

Wednesday can say they’re bigger or better than us, for anyone who’s my age (early 30s) we’ve had far more success since I started going to the games.

I imagine Man City fans couldn’t give a fuck that Man Utd fans say they’re the “bigger” team, one wins trophies and the other doesn’t.

Wilder's post match interview (I'm only 5 mins in so far) seems to be very classy in response. Praises Bannan, and explains in detail how we've not bought our recent success.

I agree with him 100% re Bannan by the way. No issue whatsoever with him dislking us, and no issue with their fans not liking Wilder. It's called a rivalry, and it will always be the same.
