We drew 2-2, did we throw away a two goal lead?

Remember the previous Huddersfield game in the 80-81 season.
It was a night game and we won 2-0, think Terry Curran scored both goals.

I was a paper boy that season and delivered papers in the week and on Saturday afternoons.
So never went to any Saturday games, just the midweek night matches.

So I didn’t attend the Walsall game, when Givens missed the last minute penalty
But I do remember having no worries that we could be relegated because we were at home to struggling Walsall and only needed a draw.
However about 3 other teams near the bottom had to win or draw.

Remember catching the bus home from my paper round and calling into Woolco near the Castle market.
Upstairs they sold tv’s and you’d call in to check the teletext results…..was shocked how we could be relegated to div 4.
Think we went down with a plus goal difference and were mid table almost the whole season.

That was 82/83 when Curran played & scored 2 the Kindon game was 80/81

Yeh was there , 2-0 up & Huddersfield sub Steve Kindon scored 2 late goals to get them a point , that dropped point would cost us dearly at the end of the season . Had the kit as a young un & liked it .. hate it now ⚔️

So that season:

Lost 1-0 in successive home games with John Ryan missing a penalty in each game
Chucked away a 2 goal lead against Huddersfield
Went 4-3 up in injury time at Walsall, only for them to score and make it 4-4 straight from the kick off
Draw at Brentford with 4 games to go, thanks to a last minute equaliser from Bob Booker
Spend only 5 minutes of the entire season in the relegation places, which were of course the last 5 minutes, missing a last minute penalty to keep us there
Relegated with a positive goal difference
Relegated in the last season of 2 points for a win, when 3 points for a win would have seen us stay up comfortably

I remain of the view that, as bad as it was, our 1980-1 relegation was one of the biggest fluke seasons of all time. You replay that season 100 times and we stay up 99 of them.

That was a couple of seasons after in 82/83 when we beat them 2-0 early in the season 👍

I won a ticket in a Radio Hallam competition to sit in what qualified as ‘prawn sandwich’ seats in the old JSS.
Took pens at HT in front of Kop. Didn’t win.
Never liked Curran, even that night.
All true.

Yeh I agree it was strange season .. but maybe the relegation was also a blessing in disguise ? It brought about the turn around of the club with Brearley as chairmen and bringing in Porterfield & 2 promotions in 3 seasons that followed that

And sadly for me I saw most of that lot!!. I remember the craziness of that season. We were bad - but should not have gone down - but as someone said - it probably was the catalyst to the revolution under Reg Brearley who brought Ian Porterfield in.

Yes, it's funny, both the 1981 and 1988 relegations were the start of something a lot better.

That's true, as I've grown older the relegation at home to Bristol City (when I was the "lucky" mascot) is something I'm glad that happened, as the following season is one of my most favourite of all time, the 89 promotion is overshadowed by its much bigger promotion the year after but I regard the 88/89 one equally as high

I always say I don't have a favourite season: I have two joint favourites, those back-to-back promotions.

I was 7 at the time, but it was my first full season of having a junior season ticket, pretty much the season where my rollercoaster of being a blade started fully

If only I could turn back time ......

I wouldn't change a minute
