Came across this relevant chart, looking at aerial dominance and progressive passing amongst championship CBs this season.

No prizes for who is the most dominant - and really highlights the gap Souttar has left, with Anel and Robinson both in the bottom half for aerial dominance.

Interestingly, most of the names being thrown around here aren't that dominant either (Darling, Tanganga, Dunne). If we want a player with a similar profile to Souttar, this seems to suggest we should look at the likes of Charlie Hughes, Liam Lindsay and Luke McNally.

That said, neither Esteve or Egan-Riley are exceptional in the air and Burnley don't seem to mind. Maybe we're overestimating how much we need a lamppost in defence.

Nice chart. Very interesting viewing

Whoever Hughes is at Hull, get him! Look at the state of Souttar's aerial dominance on there 😪

Anel and Robinson don’t score highly.

But to be honest it’s what we all see week in week out.

Great chart, googled Hughes, hes only 21 but out with a hamstring injury and not back for another 3 weeks

Nice work Adder

Interesting where both Hull centre half's are on that chart given their league position.

Hughes looks interesting and also Matty Pollock at Watford and Towler at Pompey. All young with room for progression.

Can we have a chart on tackling ability and pace to go with it ? :)

If we get promoted this season I can see us going for Hughes.

It would be very sensible to invest in him, still young and looks like he could make the step up and if we come down he would be perfect to keep to have a strong spine.

(Hughes & Soutter as a centerback pairing, yes please)

I made a thread for Charlie Hughes last week, just before the Hull game. Wasn't aware at that time that he was injured, but he's absolutely one we should be keeping an eye on to go for if the chance arises. He's fantastic.

For all Souttar’s dominance we pretty much failed to take advantage as an attacking threat all season. Darling has scored and assisted a few.

You’d hope the midfield will do a good job of repelling attacks.

The guy who puts these together seems to be mainly focussing on aerial state and passing ability for whatever reason. I'd be interested in seeing more traditional defensive stats (interceptions, clearances, tackles, etc.) but don't want to pay for a stats service.

Anyway here's one for pass completion. Souttar and Hughes again coming out of it well. Moore at Oxford looks good from the stats, can't say I remember seeing him play though.

This one makes Dunne look very poor at passing. I believe this is likely because he's playing RB; doesn't get the advantage that CBs get from passing under little pressure in their own half.

It is almost as if the league they are tooling up to try to play in is the Premier League, where they don't play hoofball, as opposed to the Northern Premier League, where they do

Aye
At one time he was far better than his younger brother & would have been a Scotland regular.
Not as dominant in the air but (far) quicker until back to back ruptured Achilles & then 9 months out with an ankle injury did for him (& his pace)
Remains competent for Rankers but currently injured (again) & will be out for “several weeks yet”

I agree Elliot Moore at Oxford or Fransisco Sierralta at Watford are the most obvious like for like replacements for Souttar.

Both these data charts show that Tanganga (who we all would be happy with) is around the same position for dominanting in the air as robbo, but not as progressive, nor has good with the ball (according to these charts).

Either this data can be misleading or we are looking at a more expensive quicker version of robbo.

Yeah he's definitely not a Soutter-esque player. Hell of an upgrade on Robinson though.

Plymouth CB Katic who they have on loan. Only 28 and an absolute beast for the championship.

Bosnian aswell so would've been a good fit with Anel.
Talovierov at 6 foot 4 Ukrainian international centre back costing £1.7 million was also immense in the air and on the floor. Shows if you look hard enough you can bring in centre backs at a reasonable price.

to quote the Guardian MBM report "Plymouth’s towering defenders Taloverov and Katic have been absolutely magnificent today. Sometimes there is a beauty in just being able to head and kick a football". 😍

Wilder obviously saw the issue and signed us the most dominant in the air.

We are so short on dominant centre halves we need 2. This graph shows that clearly. In the Premiership they are even bigger and stronger which will cause us more problem.
