It took Lyle Taylor just 13 minutes to get off the mark today in Partick's 0-2 away win at Hearts.

The loanee from us broke through the offside trap to go through one on one with the keeper, the keeper got his hand on it but the power was too much and it rocketed home.

So why wasn't he doing this for us?

Don't agree with you.

Yes, the quality of player in Scotland is poor, but no worse than the English League 1.

He'd just become too complacent, unmotivated and cosy at the Lane. In short, he needed a good kick up the arse, just like the rest of our squad.

Being unceremoniously shipped out to Scotland has obviously worked a treat, both for the player and the club.

He'd lost his way, but hopefully he'll come back to us a new player, or else it will prove to be a good shop window for him, and we get a decent fee for him when he is sold.

Either way, it's a win, win for Sheff Utd.

Does anyone else feel that he's maybe just been a tad unlucky so far? I remember him nearly breaking the crossbar at Peterborough, he hit a lovely "goal" in a home game, I forget who it was against, after the whistle had already gone and he's not had a good run in the side. He impressed against Coventry. It's in there and he'll benefit from playing games.

Sorry but there's no proof to back that up. Plenty of players have come out of the SPL and been absolutely rubbish in League One and the Championship. It is clearly a lot worse.

The ones that transition well are the ones that adapt and learn to up their game, basically becoming better players but only a few have done that. I'm hoping Flynn and Murphy are starting to do it.

Lyle Taylor needs to develop the talents he has to become better. That's why I don't see another spell in Scotland as beneficial to him. Just my opinion, Nigel knows better than me.

Taylor as been unlucky for us, and I hope this short loan run will benefit him and us when he comes back, its good to see him score so early too.

Maybe it was because they were playing Hearts rather than the general quality north of the border. Good to see him scoring regardless.

Like I said in the other Taylor thread, he will probably come back to a better environment at Sheff Utd then the one he joined and maybe this means we'll see the best of him. That said, I don't think he'll ever develop into a player that will score more then 10-12 goals a season at best in L1.

Prime example is Kris Booyd. All time top scorer in SPL, came to England and did sweet f*** all. It's so easy to deceive in Scotland. An even better example, porter, Flynn, murphy, and Taylor have all experienced success in Scotland, which begs the question:

why are we at the bottom end of league one when half our team were 'successful' in Scotland?

Answer: crap league, and proves nothing. Examples going the opposite way include: Nicky law, Anthony Stokes, georgios Samaras (who is like a god up there), Omar Daley, Kevin Kyle and Paul Heffernan to name but a few.

Seriously, we have seen enough of Taylor to know by now he can't cut it. The guys 23, so getting no better really, and hasn't scored a single goal when he has started a game in the league for us. Not the answer I'm afraid.

May be with the Jocks it comes down to management and coaching. Jock Stein managed to get a local Glasgow team to win some pot or other. All born within 37 miles of Glasgow, or so I have been told.. Denis Law Baxter Johnston and others handled the transition, from' no mark' Scottish football, to the English game without too much sweat.

I do remember watching Jinky Jimmy in a reserve game at the Lane, though he was far past his best there was a large crowd of exiled Scots at that Central League fixture.
I can't believe that it was so long ago. I'm sure that there are gems to be found over the Border.

Exactly. Irrespective of the standard of the SPL, Hearts' team does not even meet that standard. Even without the points deduction they would be rock bottom, and (to give just one example of their plight) their subs bench is supposedly occupied with kids from their junior teams to make up the numbers.

Pleased for Taylor though. It's not a bad thing he's scoring. If he does it frequently, we cna get him back and see if he does it for us.

The current United team would probably finish runners up to Celtic in the SPL. The standard is about top half League 2 most of the time. All of Scotland's decent players (and there are not that many these days) mainly play in England.

Good luck to Taylor - but scoring goals for Partick Thistle is not a sign that he will come back to BDTBL and become the next Keith Edwards.

I think Taylor has ability but probably got used to being the main man at Falkirk. With United he seemed to have loads of confidence at first and gradually things didn't run for him. Added to that the service from his teammates was diabolical. Weir soon rested him and maybe lost faith in him.

Taylor scored two in the game before NC joined us and was given a chance by NC at first. Comments made by NC suggested he thought he was lightweight and the body language of player and coach to me seemed as though they didn't see eye to eye. Indeed I think Falkirk fans suggested he thought he thought he was a "big time Charlie" when he came to us.

Whether or not. NC clearly doesn't fancy him and I can't see him returning unless he gets a hatful of goals up there and puts a stone of muscle on in the summer. Then we might have a player; he has the basic skills and all strikers should have that bit of arrogance anyway.

Came with the promise of a bit of pace and showed none. Was weak on the ball and rubbish at holding it up. Seen the goal against Hearts and he very nearly ballsed it up from 3 yards by hitting it straight at the keeper.

There is no proof to back up what you're saying . It is not "clearly a lot worse". Also, lets deal in fact. Lyle Taylor never came from the SPL. He came from the Scottish Championship. Ross McCormack scored a total of ten goals for Motherwell in 5o appearances. He moved to Cardiff and equalled that record in under three months. So that automatically means the SPL is miles better than the English Football League. Or it means you should take players on their individual merits and not denigrate a whole league based on talking utter crap. The English Championship is made up of a ton of Scotsman.

Kris Boyd's record in England was a goal every three games, I would hardly call that "sweet f*** all". Why are you bottom of the league if half your team was successful in Scotland? Jamie Murphy played regularly in the SPL. What others did? When did four players equate to "half a team"? Since when was Samaras a god? Care to back that statement up? Are you saying that Omar Daley wouldn't get a game in the English Football league, what about Heffernan? Kevin Kyle plays in Division 2 , and used to play in the premiership with Sunderland!

Can't really be bothered responding to them all individually, apologies. However, does this response suggest you think the Scottish league is a good standard to judge a player? Taylor scored 0 goals in 10 starts in league 1, then gone and scored 3 in 2 in SPL. Is that not evidence? Do you think partick have a better side than us? I don't.

You're not understanding this are you? Ross McCormack scored a hatful for Cardiff and barely any for Motherwell. That surely means the SPL is ten times better than the Championship. Would that not be evidence? Hearts went down toAnfield and drew with the Mighty Liverpool, is that not evidence?

Ouch my feelings :)

There's plenty of proof. Granted some have come down to England and done well or fine. McCormack is a good example and there are a few others. You're bound to find a few!

I can list so many that have made the switch and not been up to it. Will if you want but I would rather not take the time if that's ok because let's face it, a lot of people could name a good few. There are also plenty of very average or poor players that have gone from England to Scotland and have looked very good north of the border.

Did I not in my first post recognise that some players transition well by developing and becoming better players when they move south? I think that shows I do judge individual players on their own merits but I don't see how anyone can argue that the success rate isn't poor.

So I will ask again, do you think it is a good assessment of a players credentials then?

No, you're whole routine of basing a players abillity on which league he plays in is the problem! Take players on their individual merits. Steven Fletcher , McCormack, Bryson , McCarthy, McArthur, Whittaker etc.

Go for it, name them. Shock horror, some signings aren't a success! That's football. Most signings are a gamble. The fact that you're basically saying the only reason some Scots are successful in England is because they develop better when moving south sort of shows you're not the brightest.

Scott McDonald 93 in 196 games in SPL; 40 in 127 in Championship
Derek Riordan 98 in 255 games in Scotland; 0 in 11 in League Two

Is that enough evidence? I have more.....

No one is even defining it by nationality. Scott McDonald is Australian. Don't need to be bright.....I've offered evidence for my opinion.

I think we're arguing different points. I'm not saying some players dont come from scotland and become successful. I'm saying, that succeeding in Scotland does not prove a player is capable in the English league. Taylor is becoming a prime example.

There's a difference between English League one football and scottish prem football. He's obviously not going to fit into the style of football united play. Good luck to him if he does go at the end of the season, which he most likely will.
