Jose is not a young lad in Everton’s reserves now. We want some more maturity from him in his performances.

We are surprised that he has got four bookings under his belt because he should not have that for the sort of player he is. A couple of them have been petulant so we want those sort of things out of his game and then his ability will flourish.

The more I hear from Clough, the more I like him. He likes his discipline and this is bang on the money!

Yep I think Cloughie is United's new John Harris. I have hopes (high) that over time he will become a great manager for us. Hopefully Sheffield United for him will be what Nottm Forest was for his dad.

Hearing some interesting stories about the young(er) Jose from some of my scouse mates. If Clough turns this lad into a proper professional I'll be seriously impressed.

Seems he likes to live somewhat faster off the pitch than he is on it.

All agree that he's got bags of talent though.

A county cup would be nice at the moment just to get us moving! I remember us doing Barnsley 9.0 in the 60s in the county cup and they had borrowed a piggy keeper for the game (think they called him Scothorn or summat) and it's fair to say we gave him a hell of a time!

Know what you mean swizzler , I also think that with a strong manager in any business , that once the rules are set out , you both know what you can and cannot expect , and I think you get more loyalty from both sides hence strengthing the bounds between each other and both sides are then prepared to go the extra yard , one on the pitch , the manager defending his players once they do the business on said pitch , if not look at that creature mr king , and how much game time he's getting . Good riddance to bad rubbish .

Everyone above has more or less said everything that needs saying.

There's a great deal of work to do, but Nigel actually feels like one of our own. He seems to empathise with what it takes for a club and it's supporters to do well. He's also a realist, so one performance at a time, but he's definitely going about his job impressively. The way the modern game is going we'll do well to get to the Premiership and stay there, but in Nigel I think we have someone who will respond to the demands that come his way. Recent events, the sacking of Steve Clarke for one, bring home how manic expectations have become. I just hope our board show the same degree of patience with Nigel as Man U's board did with Ferguson when he first took over at MUFC. I'm not comparing Clough to 'ol Grumpy but Nigel definitely offers good stewardship and that's what we desperately need.

As for Baxter, I hope he responds to Nigel's brand of common-sense. Over the years we've had a few players with technical skill and guile, and this lad ticks both those boxes. It's just the stuff that happens off the pitch Jose has to sort out. Good player though, and I hope he sets the standard for future acquisitions.

Agree with a lot of the above...I like how NC set the tone with the way he dealt with Brandy,and is demanding discipline and a strong work ethic from all the players as a minimum requirement,and they know what's expected.
He's beginning to get more out of Baxter..seemed like he played him in the hole at Stevenage behind the 2 strikers which is good to see,and I would like to see us set up like that tomorrow..UTB!

Early days I know but so far NC's exceeded my expectations by a country mile (and I'm a born optimist) in every regard as manager. Thank you Santa, best Christmas present since I was a kid.

We played 3-5-2 (Baxter pushing forward from midfield as you say), although not for the entire game. Stevenage played the same formation, and it was a relief to see their best player (Freeman) stuck at left wingback. If Stevenage had put Freeman at left wing against an unprotected McMahon I think Clough would have changed the formation immediately.


Clough has been quite flexible with his formations, team selections and tactics, and has often made some surprising changes. It can be a good thing and a bad thing, though I personally quite like it when team selection and tactics is something you're not entirely sure about before games. It adds a little to the game and can also give a little insight into what the game plan is.

I doubt we'll play the same formation tomorrow, as we probably need a little more width at home.

Yep went to that. Keeper was Gary Scothorne who was Wednesday's youth keeper but was actually from Barnsley. Think that score line destroyed his confidence as he never progressed any further and ended up non league soon after.
