Swiss Ramble - Cost of Promotion

Thank you for posting that, there's some really interesting conclusions, not least of which that in recent seasons only ourselves in 2019 and Brentford in 2021 managed to make a profit after being promoted to the PL (for what good that did us anyway).

Last season, and this one, have shown that it's become harder and harder to be competitive if you get promoted, and unless there's an owner with pockets deep enough to fit Barry Barry-Bannon inside it's putting a club's future at risk even to try, especially considering the cost of getting promoted in the first place.

I agree clubs like us need a firm foundation to be premier league team. That if anything should be the goal of our new owners. Unfortunately the lure of the premiership will dampen that. Hopefully they will have various strategies, both short and long term to achieve this

Without any evidence to support me a would think that Brighton, Bournemouth, Fulham and Villa are doing ok after recently being in the Championship. I have left out Forest as they are massively bankrolled.

Threads like this annoy me. The whole point of competition football (or any sport) is to try and win. By winning, you then reap the rewards, by either lifting a trophy, or promotion. To discuss promotion as a 'bad thing' is ludicrous. May just as well disbandon the team and close the club down. Or deliberately lose every game, in order to avoid the dreaded reward of promotion. Madness.

If I have to suffer another season like the last one, I might have a mental breakdown, it was so depressing.

But now tekkover is complete, maybe we can view promotion with some optimism.

They are all massively bankrolled

Bournemouth would be a League 2 club without squillions first from a Russian Oligarch and now a filthy rich yank.

Tony Bloom chucked £500 million into Brighton

Fulham are just a smallish west London club in a trendy location that's had a succession of very rich foreign owners using it as their personal toy.

Villa are the only club that you'd say are a traditionally big club out of that lot. But they've chucked some money about and again have rich foreign owners

Whilst that is interesting, the point made at the very beginning about promotion bonuses playing havoc with the figures just about kills everything. You need to separate those out. We know ours was in excess of £20m last time we went up paid for by the riches of the Premier League (people often forget this when they say wheres the £100m gone - you have £20m out of the door before you start). Take that out and our losses come down to £12-13m. Still excessive mind.

…and now it is our turn with “filthy rich yanks” to bankroll us ??????? Perhaps not.

All backed by billionaires and losing hundreds of millions a year before prs kept them in check

Fulham ?
Brighton backed but over many seasons so no massive bankrolling there.
If they are now in check, does that open the door a little wider for others to join them for more than a season or two.

We'll see.

It doesn't look like Premier League status is sustainable without someone chucking millions at a club

Shahid Khan is the owner of Fulham Football Club. Khan is a Pakistani-American billionaire businessman and sports tycoon. He also owns the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL and co-owns All Elite Wrestling (AEW) with his son, Tony Khan.

Only half a billion

How can you join them when your squad is hundreds of millions behind theirs and you are only allowed to spend your income.?

Affluence and assets don’t always lead to input. Tony Bloom has had some years to spread his input, so I think it unfair to think what they have achieved is purely by bankrolling.
However I guess you will not agree !!!!

I think generally as a fanbase we are comfortable being a reasonably big fish in a smaller pond. But I won’t lie, my enjoyment of this season thus far has been slightly tempered by the looming spectre of another Premier league disaster waiting for us on the other side of the door.
Hopefully the new owners have viewed us from a distance and observed that failure to prepare and failure invest can be a very chastening experience in the top flight of English football….But our ability to bounce back from such a humiliating season should be encouraging to everyone invested in our wonderful club.

Certainly in the case of Brighton and Brentford their success has been down to very good recruitment model and investment in it. Same probably applies to the other clubs mentioned. Yes probably need bank rolled too. Palace also should be mentioned as Club who have established themselves in PL and again seem to have really good recruitment model and probably very good Cat 1 academy. The only other way is to do a Forest and spend a fortune on players. It’s not ideal and they survived by the skin of their teeth but now seem to be established. Don’t know whether they will have FFP (or what it’s called now) issues in next season or two. If we are to survive we need to establish a recruitment infrastructure and Cat 1 academy which will need substantial investment and won’t happen overnight. Sadly I fear that if we do get promoted this season we will probably just come back down. Look at Soton Ipswich and Leicester this season and us, Burnley and Luton last season.

The Premier League is getting out of hand financially. Not sure how long it will survive in it's current " billionaire " owners only league. When it collapses, and it will, it's going to be messy.
