In the summer when Kevin Davies left Bolton for Preston. Would you have been happy for him to join SUFC?

Vote before opening the spoiler....

He has scored the same amount as Chris Porter

No not really, would have been very strange if we did bring him on board since at the start of the season we were determined to build a young passing side. Davis doesn't fit the bill.

I thought about it but would have had to have been on a short term contract or even a pay as you play deal merely due to his age. He used to be a good player but age is a bit against him now so I wouldn't have brought him in as our main striker.

He's not pulled many daisies at Preston really has he so looks like a good thing we didn't sign him at the minute.

I've seen him play for PNE this season. His hold up play is still classy, and he's still mobile enough. His finishing was awful though.

So he's like a more talented Chris Porter on ten times the salary.

What?

A bit dissappointed we didn't get that Maradonna bloke in '78, or a young Alan Hanson when we nearly did.

Hardly on my, not very extensive, list of "ones that got away".

Maradonna? Who's she :-)

Reminds me of that Madonna video featuring Ali G when he sees her and says "is you Maradona?"

Chris Porter has a career goals to game ratio of 3.4

Kevin Davies has a career goals to game ratio of 5.2

My point of the thread was to see how people rated Kevin Davies. He is basically a Chris Porter. A foil for the other striker. Although Porter is more prolific you might say.

I know Davies has played at a higher standard but just thought I would point this out when people knock Porter for not scoring.

Emile Heskey has a career goals to game ratio of 4.5 (and he plays in Australia FFS!!)

You're comparing a guy who played mostly in the premiership against a guy who has rarely played higher than the 2nd division? Are you going to compare Wilson's win percentage against Warnock again too?

For the record I didn't want Davies

Ossie Ardilles in midfield. Didn't we once have a deal lined up for Frank Worthington, too? Around the time of the Hansen bid I think. Not signing Gary Ablett when he was on loan was a kick in the teeth, too.

It's all relative. Porter does the same job that Davies has done throughout his career, just at a lower standard. Sheffield United play at a lower standard than Bolton and have done for about 12 years with the exception of 1.

Would you like me to draw you a picture? ;)

And as for Wilson. He has the highest win ratio as a manager. Ok he managed us in the third tier whereas Warnock managed us in the top 2. Wilson still had to win the teams he faced.

Danny Wilson & Neil Warnock are far and away the best two managers we have had in the last 20 years

We certainly tried to sign Ian Wallace around the same time as Hansen.
I also think you could make a case for Traianos Dellas as being one who got away even though he played for us, given his later career. (Or 'long and useless ' as I used to call him, most embarrassingly when I said 'oh what the fucks long and useless up to now' just before he delivered his 30 yard thunderbolt against Portsmouth.)

Yeah it was going to be a sort of double signing wasn't it? I know Wallace and Hansen weren't at the same club but I think United wanted to sign the pair.

What happened to Scottish football by the way? In the 70's there were a huge number of great Scottish players. Virtually every top English team had 3-4 of them at least and some of the best players in the First Division were Scottish (Dalglish, Hansen, Souness, Bremner, Jordan, Lorimer. McQueen etc etc). Add to that Scotland qualifying for the World Cup in both 74 and 78 when England failed and beating England 3 years out of 4 74-77.

Compare that to the position now.

From the thread title I thought he had married Graham :o

I heard about the new ruling on the Church of Scientology yesterday and put 2 and 2 togehter.
It all seemed so logical to me at the time.

He's still playing actually, in the red and white stripes of Estudiantes.

Prefer you to write me your address :) What are you drawing a picture of exactly?

So in a way what you're saying to me is that because Walter Smith dominated Scottish football with Rangers at the same time Ferguson was doing it for Man Utd they are also as good as each other because they won what was put in front of them? Are you sure you're not female?

Yes, Wallace was at Dumbarton and Hansen at Partick. Sirrel tried to sign them

Yes, he was a pupil at Ecclesall Juniors (until 1959) and at High Storrs (not sure how long for) before going to Moseley Hall grammar in Cheadle. He studied at Warwick University and played for Skelmersdale before moving to Liverpool in 1970. He is now 66 so his heroes must have been Hodgy, Joe Shaw and Doc Pace?

Viv Anderson played a few youth games for us. I think Chris Waddle came to us as a schoolboy and stayed at Moncrieffe House (Jimmy Sirrel's wife did the cooking etc). I have read that Geoff Hurst and Nobby Stiles played in Probables v Possibles match at the Lane in late 1950s

Yes, almost a lifetime in the premiership V not making the bench at Chesterfield. The parallels are uncanny.

Manager of this team, take your pick Ferguson or Clough senior.

Think you could put a decent XI together of the players Porterfield was in for that got away:-

Steve Bruce, Neil Pointon, Gerry Forrest, Danny Wilson, Ronnie Glavin, Peter Nicholas, Ray Houghton, Kevin Drinkall
