Probably be DJ Campbell. May as well go for the hat-trick of dodgy forwards (allegedly). No one else will touch him, if found guilty of anything of course.

observant people will also remember of the swindon away fixture-we played 2 games in 2 days, but canny remember the boxingday fixture the day before?

I want to say Middlesboro home, 1-1 Glynn Hodges header. Beesley sent of after about 10 minds for two bookable offences, the second of which was the fastest handball in their area I have ever seen...

Did not realise it is our only FA cup visit, I will maintaining my 100% attendance record.

Anybody got the match details? I think Villa got promoted that season and have been in the top division ever since.
see link below. Tony Field was our scorer. My dad heard that Ted Hemsley had a bust up with Ken Furphy after the game because Furphy said that Ted didnt mark Ray Grayson tight enough

Yes I remember that Trig I was there and I think that defeat ended a long unbeaten run.

It didn't I am afraid. We lost at Middlesbrough 1-0 on Boxing Day then our results were:

28/12/74 H Arsenal 1-1
4/1/75 H Bristol City (FAC) W2-0
11/1/75 H Man City D1-1
18/1/75 A Spurs W3-1
25/1/75 A Villa (FAC) L1-4

So the unbeaten record was only 4 games :-)

Indeed it was.

Not quite. They had one season in Division 2 in 87-88.

Cheers silent, I was hoping for more memorable names on the Villa team, the name that jumped out was Chico Hamilton who played for us after Villa and lived in Sheffield in the 90's my kids went to his soccer school at Pitz.

I remember the 1975 game, the football special was twice as long as the platforms on Witton station then on the short walk to the ground we were pelted with empty pint pots from the Witton Arms and Aston Hotel. Away days were lively affairs in those days. One of the few times Tony Currie couldn't be arsed I think the snow around kick off put him off a bit, funny how we had a good team but were always dumped out of the cup early in those days.

Can't remember much about the '75 game, I went with my wife (bless her), we went on the normal train with the intention of having a night out in Birmingham. We were so disgruntled we had one pint in the city centre and caught the train back to Sheffield.

We were absolutely battered. We were pretty dreadful in the Cup around this time and an actual progression to the 4th Round meant we took thousands and the massive open away end was the fullest I ever saw it as they were in a lower division and we thought we'd be heading for R5.
It was bedlam, with the last 10 minutes (I'm pretty sure we were 4 down) being played out with mass brawls taking place on our end as the Villa fans had made it round from the Holte end. Remember people actually rolling around the steps/banking as we pulled 1 back. It was so bad I didn't actually see our goal!

Suspect it will nothing like that this time off the park but the score might be similar.
That was my very first away game , went to the match with my father and a bunch of his mates in a transit van making several pitstops along the way and we got a footballing lesson that day , Remember looking at there Kop and thinking wow that end is massive , my next away day on my own wasn't much better either 6-1 drubbing at Forest , with my mates getting slapped by pig fans in pond st while waiting for national express coaches. , oh the joy of being a Blade .

I think Brum and Villa play alternate like we do so yes one of the fixtures will have to change. Don't think they bother with West Brom though. So yeah potentially a changed kick off depending on who has to change.

Just as the Mancs are in Salford, not the 'old Manchester' a Baggie supporting mate, refuses, point blank to accept that his club are in B'rum. If memory serves (unlikely) the boundary is pretty close to the ground??

It rus up one side of the ground (the side towards Birmingham) so your mate is correct.

However with the construction of the M5 providing a much more visible barrier between Birmingham and West Brom, many round here stick to the east/west of the M5 rule.

Manchester United are actually in the twon of Stretford which is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, not, as you say, in Manchester.

WBA have always been outside Birmingham. West Bromwich used to be a seperate borough and is now part of the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell. West Brom was historically in a different county (Staffordshire) to Birmingham (Warwickshire).

Aren't Villa are worst possible opponents in that they've beaten us more times than anyone else in the Football League ?

They've beaten us 62 times and number 63 is coming up. I fear they will completely annihilate us. Never can there have been such an ability gap as now.

I suspect the '82 European Cup winner might have given the United team at that tiem a bit of a thrashing.

We probably were as bad as we are now, Villa were much better than they are...

Perhaps the most amazing fact is that in our last 9 visits to Scunthorpe we have failed to win. Though some might count the 3-2 (AET) Associate Members Cup win there on 20/3/84 as breaking that run.

Tuesday 3rd December, 2013. Johnstone's Paint Trophy. 5-3 after penalties.

Oh, the joy!!!:D

I've decided I'm bending the rules and including the FA Youth Cup, just to cheer myself up.

So the last time I saw us play at Villa Park (2011) we won, 1-0, with Joe Ironside bagging the only goal of the game. :)

So far as the first team is concerned, I suspect you'll see more wins at Villa in your lifetime than goals by Joe Ironside, or maybe the same number!

Dunno... people seemed fairly giddy on Twitter but I'm assuming they didn't get to Villa Park in 2007 when we lost 3-0.

In fact, a quick squizz at Soccerbase suggests we haven't won there since 1966.

Bodes well dunnit?

I did. We were feeble. I had a sinking feeling after our performance that day. It confirmed once and for all Warnock's ineptitude at Premiership level, though of course he has demonstrated it again since.

Chico played against us in our 5-0 win against Villa in November 1969, I remember seeing a photo of him clearing the ball away with Eddie Colquhoun in close attendance. The first time I saw Chico was in the Chesterfield v Villa game in August 1970 (Blades were playing at Orient that day). I remember my dad being impressed with him and asked a Villa fan near to us for their number 10's name

True but we didn't play them around that time. The point I was trying to make was we've lost 62 times to Villa, mostly when we've been in the same division as them. What's going to happen when we are two divisions apart?

This a good thread, please don't derail it with your hoofball bollocks.

We'll probably win.

:D

Young man. You are becoming a minor irritant. I've forgotten more about football that you will ever know. Either show some respect or there will be no further dialogue between us.

I had been drinking for 8 hours straight when that game kicked off, and I was stone cold sober by the time it was over. I was actually confident of staying up before that performance.

In terms of cowardly, pathetic and inept performances, then that is up there with the 'best'. The Blackwell led play off final performance in 2009 is the only recent one I can think of that rivals it. You can see he learned from the master.

I watched it at that bowling alley down by Finsbury Park with my son. I actually got a sinking feeling before the game started when the results came through and Fulham had beaten Liverpool and West Ham had won. If memory serves, had Fulham lost that game we would have been 99% sure of safety.

Nah, we would still have gone down had Fulham (1 away win all season) beaten Middlesboro the week after and all other results stayed the same.

As it was Fulham lost 3-1, but they were safe by then anyway...

Anyone know how many tickets we'll get?

Fair enough. I think the sinking feeling must have been caused by Fulham being out of trouble by that win (when obviously one wouldn't have expected them to beat Liverpool had the latter not fielded a weakened side).

It must have also been the WHU result. Had they lost they would have been 3 points behind us , with one game left and facing their final game at Man Utd. We would have had 2 games left and (if WHU had lost by 1) a 9 goal better goal difference. Surely even we couldn't have been relegated from that position...
