I'd like to think that there may be someone developing a 'safe' flare/smoke bomb that football can sell for use in the grounds.

It can add to the atmosphere but of course it's got to be safe.

Fans generate an atmosphere not flags and flares.

They've had their time and place.

I'd rather see alcohol being allowed to be served on the stands (not just the concourses) being promoted instead of this.

It's much better watching united when you're pissed than when you've got smoke and flames in your eyes

I like flares. Handled responsibly and not chucked around they help create an exciting atmosphere. I also like standing up at games, chanting, singing, taunting the opposition’s fans, big banners, flags etc. These also help create a partisan atmosphere. I also like walking the dog over the moors in adverse weather conditions, revving my mountain bike up and steaming off down muddy trails or even staying at home and tinkering with my truck (no, that’s not a euphemism for wanking). Fortunately for country pubs, tearooms, online and local bike equipment outlets, 4x4 spares retailers, the dog and myself, the latter haven’t yet been, at worst, banned or, at best, frowned upon by nimbys.

What will you be doing this weekend?

Flags?!

What next? Banning orders for farting? Forced to sign an insurance waiver for handling of super hot Bovril? Soap in the Kop bogs?! Madness!!!

I don't know about burns from flares but Foxy and Linz lost skin due to the pies at Orient on Saturday. Hotter than freshly erupted larva they were.

I didn't, I sensibly waited until they were slightly cooler than the core of the sun :)

Flags are banned without a fire certificate

I quote from that article

when I read Wembley’s rules and regulations it makes me sad to think that football was once a sport enjoyed by many who enjoyed to bring with them their own piece to the party. I quote “Flags more than 250cm in size at their widest or longest section will not be allowed and flagpoles greater than 1m in length will not allowed” But they allow a manufactured shit band to carry on playing an awful racket to drum up a false (largely unwanted) atmosphere every time the national team plays, and what’s worse is they get paid to f*cking do it!

:D

Indeed they do, and the England/Pig Band are at the best irritating and at the worst a fucking pain in the earholes, but only metaphorically. A flare will do you far more damage than a halfwit blowing a trumpet.

Rattles, Flags, Those silly trumpet like things from South Africa all banned in stadiums these dayson health and safety grounds but yet they still let those muppets over in S6 stand playing the only 3 songs they know on repeat whilst someone repeat bangs a drum in the most annoying way!........whats all that about.

Singing will be the next out as the noise levels will exceed those allowed on Health and Safety grounds!

On a more serious note though I don't agree with the flares, seem a bit too dangerous to me.

Someone sat around QQ 90 on the kop needs one of these most definitely, god knows what he/she eats on a friday evening.

On topic though , I like flairs but as with many things the few idiots have spoilt it for the rest of us

It's always worst on a Boxing Day Ted. At least the herbal smokers on the Kop used to drown out the brussel sprout smell. ;)

I haven't got a problem with Flares really...anything to bring some atmosphere back.
Rules are rules though, and nobody should be throwing them around.
The whole H&S thing has gone mad though..I remember crowd surges, fag ends torpedoing down the Kop...even actual fires being made on the Kop...nobody really got hurt, but the spontaneity and over exuberance of a Football crowd was part of what makes the game..and I know things have moved on,but they've cleansed the game of it's atmosphere/passion that got hold of you as a young lad.I feel sorry for younger supporters these days with the sit down, shut up and pay your money attitude that's ruining the game.

i think some of us have forgotten what a proper atmosphere is.. i certainly did until i went to a game here.. they set off lots of flares here.. but that is the important point. they simply 'set them off' the trouble with england is that people start throwing them around and using them as weapons.. it's a cultural thing.. it's why we can't be trusted to drink beer either

...or stand at games like the Germans

How many iconic Blades games with amazing atmosphere needed flares to assist them?

Seating v standing, flares v no flares, flags v no flags - all irrelevant, all you need is a set of fans who are up for it

and most aren't because they know that the high vis jacket brigade will throw them out at the first opportunity.. sitting down allows the security to keep an eye on you .. it is that simple

what i am saying is i don't think it is that simple. frankly i don't know what the answer is. but we need one quickly because IMO football is slowly dying in this country.. most of the people at the lane are mid 40's (like me)

I think some safe standing sections would work. I'm a bit old for it every week, but if I was having a day out I'd be up for cellular standing ala Germany. I think fans aged 16-25 years would probably prefer the option to and I don't begrudge them that. Can't see the issue with offering choice.

There are more kids at English football now than there were when I was young

Maybe it's a generational thing here, but I much prefer seating. I used to go to a lot of Chesterfield matches at Saltergate, which was all standing on 3 sides of the ground. I hated it. Standing in the same place for 2 hours is never comfortable. My legs always used to get really sore. If I sat down, I couldn't see the game, because of course, every other cunt was stood up! Makes no sense to me, frankly. Seating's more comfortable. Shorter people actually get a chance to see something, and there's not a risk of people being crushed when there are crowd surges.
