It was a dramatic evening at Bramall Lane on Friday evening in a pulsating top of the table clash where the Blades carried on their tremendous start to the season. Sunderland were in the ascendancy in the first half and should have led but Michael Cooper made a tremendous penalty save to deny Patrick Roberts. The visitors dominated the ball and chances but gave United a lifeline when Chris Mepham was sent off for bringing down Tyrese Campbell. However, on the stroke of half time Harry Souttar’s stupid pull back saw him pick up his second yellow and it was ten v ten. The second half, saw the Blades awake from their slumber and gradually they started to get on top with Femi Seriki again impressive from the bench. The unlikely hero was another substitute, as Tom Davies pounced to slide in the late winner to spark jubilant scenes at the Kop end.

In a top of the table contest, Wilder brought back his two starting full backs, Harrison Burrows and Alfie Gilchrist. Sunderland had enjoyed a superb start to the season but had struggled for wins in recent weeks but were still unbeaten in ten games and remained right amongst the pacesetters prior to the game. They started the game with an unchanged side after their draw at home to West Bromwich Albion.

The game started with the away side settling better and were moving it around crisply to push the home side back. Roberts cross from the right was not far off an advancing Sunderland attacker before Odour showed quick feet to move the ball on. United had been slow to start but did win an early corner which was taken short and moved across to Hamer but his effort was wild and a long way over.

Rak Sakyi then got past O’Nien and exchanged passes but the wingers finish was well wide. The visitors were playing expansive football though and were not sitting back and youngster Watson was taking the eye with his running with the ball causing Gilchrist several problems. Cooper had to be alert to take the cross from the winger as O’Nien tried to capitalise. Watson then had another good run after being fed by another youngster Rigg as the Black Cats were controlling much of the early running.

Hamer had an effort from range deflected wide but the home side had not really got control of midfield and the game was quite open which was suiting the runners from the away side who were looking to get in and behind. The best chance of the game came on 26 minutes when Hume’s cross fell for Bellingham and his shot was blocked. Watson lashed the rebound wide as Cooper could only look on and hope. The danger was clear and where it was coming from and soon after, the visitors had a penalty. Watson was played in by the intelligent flick from Isidor and Robinson was too late to react and clumsily brought his man down. The penalty award was never in doubt and the Blades skipper was cautioned.

Roberts took the kick and went to Cooper’s left but the keeper guessed right and got a strong hand down to push the ball away. In doing so, he continued his astonishing record at the Lane as he has still not been beaten in around eleven hours of football.

Despite this let off, the Blades continued to struggle as they gave the ball away and were not winning the loose stuff as Sunderland continued to dominate. Youngster Watson had clearly been the games outstanding player and came inside and hit a low shot that hit his own man, Isidor, and deflected wide.

Watson was on the run again after Souttar brought Isidor down, but the advantage was played leading to the winger shooting narrowly wide again. The Blades Aussie centre back was cautioned meaning both centre backs were walking somewhat of a tightrope.

Bellingham danced into the box but his theatrical fall drew fury from the Blades fans as ref Ward waved it away as the referee chose no action either way. United had offered little in an attacking sense and had not been able to force Sunderland back, but suddenly out of nothing they were handing a huge advantage as Campbell was played in by Hamer after the visitors had coughed up possession. Mepham came across but he did not get the ball and was clearly the last man, even if there was some doubt if Campbell was going directly to goal, as he came back on himself. The tackle was wild though and late and this would also have contributed to Ward brandishing the red card.

Hamer had the free kick, right on the edge of the box, but his effort hit the wall and Sunderland ushered the ball away. The game entered stoppage time but the numbers were evented up as Campbell gave away possession too cheaply and Isidor was able to spin away from Souttar. The centre back stupidly grabbed the striker’s shirt and the second yellow seemed inevitable. It was a really poor decision as the foul took place right on half way and immediately negated the advantage the Blades had found themselves with.

Seriki came on for O’Hare at the break with Gilchrist moving inside to centre back. The Blades immediately improved and Seriki’s forceful running, which has been a feature in recent games, saw him drive forward and find Gilchrist whose cross skimmed off a defender and out for a corner. Rak Sakyi was playing more centrally and he had one good run where he ran through three challenges before being taken out. Burrows free kick was wide of the right hand post. United now were much more forceful in their play but Robinson had to do well to hold up Isidor at the other end and got a whack for his troubles. Burrows then was alert to deny the cross coming in.

Souza got away from overplaying as Isidor robbed him but lashed it wide as Sunderland looked to respond after United’s improved start to the half. O’Nien hauled down Seriki as the full back again looked to be positive with another determined run before Rak Sakyi combined with Peck leading to a deflected effort going wide. Ballard and Isidor had to put behind for consecutive corners. United now were in the ascendancy and had a series of chances with 20 minutes to go. Firstly, Souza’s was punched away by Patterson before Seriki’s angled effort was saved by the legs of the keeper.

Sunderland won a corner at the other end and Ballard’s header was cleared away in the 6-yard box as both teams were not sitting back and settling for a draw. Hamer was harshly booked for a tackle on Rigg as the referee Ward continued to frustrate all those around the ground with his overly fussy officiating meaning a game that had seen both games have a good go, was not allowed to flow.

United made changes on 77 minutes with One for Campbell and Davies for Rak Sakyi with Sunderland also making two substitutes of their own – with Mayeda and Alese on for Roberts and Watson.

Peck turned inside and hit a powerful drive but it was always rising and went over the bar as the game entered the final 10 minutes. On 83 minutes, the breakthrough was made and it was a dream return for Tom DAVIES. Peck tried to fashion an opening the ball pinballed around before Davies got a foot in to regain possession and then went down the side before sliding in to power his finish under the body of Patterson.

The celebration showed what it meant to the former Everton player after his long road to recovery from injury as the whole side joined in to mob the midfielder.

Sunderland tried to respond by Alese was squeezed out before Hamer was able to steal possession and run down the wing before hitting a low shot into the side netting. Norrington Davies came on for Burrows as the clock ticked down towards 90 minutes. Wilder was booked for his remonstrations after another strange decision as the game entered four minutes of stoppage time. Mayeda had an effort blocked before Ballard was a long way off target as Sunderland had not really tested Cooper in the second half.

One did well to hold it up and force a corner before the ball was switched to Seriki whose drive shot was deflected wide. Incredibly Davies was booked as he dared to question why two Sunderland men were only 4 or 5 yards from the ball on a corner! However, the Blades kept it in the corner and the final whistle came soon after to spark wild scenes in front of the Kop as Davies was carried shoulder high and thrown into the air by his teammates in celebration of his big moment on his return.

The Blades returned to the top of the table after a gritty, if not totally convincing win, but kept another clean sheet and showed a resilience and fitness level to ensure that they look like they can continue to last the course at the head of the Championship summit.

United – Phew. Exciting game that may not have had many goals but had a bit of everything and was certainly good for the neutral too. Two red cards – one for either side – a penalty miss and then a late goal for the returning sub who had been out for almost a year with a serious long-term injury. The three points were huge for United and showed the mentality of the group. It was a game we were a long way from our best but gutted it out and found the big moment. Despite it being a somewhat disjointed performance, it keeps the run going in terms of clean sheets, wins at home and the 6 match unbeaten spell and made it 7/9 points this week with two tough games in that stretch. We had more adversity with the concession of a penalty and then a red card but just fought hard and stayed in the game but for a long time did not look close to winning the game.

I felt first half we were really poor. They maybe surprised us with their intensity. Maybe a few thought it would be a stroll but they came out with a really good intensity and think won most of the loose balls and controlled midfield. They had runners and pace in behind and felt they had a few really good moves with the lad Watson excellent and causing us several issues. We never got to grips with the way they moved it on at pace and they had a fluency we did not. They sort of swarmed all over us and we could not get out (not helped by overplaying at the back) and were so careless with the ball. We seemed very sluggish, on and off the ball and they had a few decent efforts just wide. The penalty was not a shock and had been coming but Cooper gets us out of jail but they had more chances after this and I thought surely they will make their domination play. Suddenly the red card comes out of nothing but then Souttar’s moment of madness meant we could not even enjoy any kind of thought of getting in at half time and making this man advantage start.

Seriki came on and again made a difference as Watson had to think about things the other way and slowly United started to find moments after being outplayed for much of the first half. We won a few corners and Seriki and Souza had efforts saved. We started to push them back. Sunderland remained positive and had a few moments but nothing as clear as the first half. We came again and made changes but we were having much more of the play now and Davies then has his moment of glory, which sort of came out of a broken play/move.

After this they did try and respond but we managed it pretty well and comfortably and in the end squeak out the win. Did we deserve it? Probably not but who cares?! It reminded me of the Blackburn game under Hecky a few years ago -that had sendings off, an awful referee and then a late winner at the Kop end. We got the win, did not concede, and took the big chance. Credit for Wilder, and United, who had to make lots of changes and another experienced player let him down but we regrouped and showed some real resolve. It was a massive win and felt big, even at this stage of the season. We ended up with a fair few kids on again and missing the presence/influence of Souttar/Anel and Moore. It is just nice to be top of the table (might not be when you read this!) and continuing the run. We have had injuries and red cards (disappointed in both Anel and Souttar who need to be much more disciplined and better at their decision making) but keep eeking out the wins. West Brom will be tough without our main two centre backs but this group keeps surprising me so who knows? Hopefully Moore and Brewster will not be far away and we can keep the run going with 3/4 away games to come before Boxing Day.

Credit the management and the players for the mentality being different in the group this season, with a real determination to not be a soft touch or get beaten. Also credit Wilder for not being afraid to play the youngsters and change things around.

Ratings:

Cooper 8/10 – His mark may seem high as he has made maybe two or three other standard saves but seen a number go past the post. The penalty save is such a big moment and helps turn the game. He did guess right but was still a very good save. Seems so cool and unflappable and such a calm customer. Really top signing and improved the defence so much. Given too much pressure by the defence with unnecessary pass backs.

Gilchrist 5.5/10 - Thought his first half mark was more like a 4/10 as he was given a bit of a runaround by the dangerous Watson. Did not get close enough or hold him up and gave up too much space. Second half saw a big improvement and he played well at centre back and was much better.

Burrows 6/10 – Quiet in terms of the forward play. Had one or two crosses and then the free kick wide. Defensively, he had a few moments where he was pulled across and their was gaps. Second half was more solid and linked better.

Robinson 6/10 – His first half was a bit of a mess really and thought he was given a bit of a run around and gave away the penalty. He seemed to not know who to mark as they had runners from deep and was left exposed. He has much better after the break and was able to get to the ball first and at least move us up the field.

Souttar 3/10 –Had been a bit sloppy at times and seemed slow as they had quick players moving through the middle. A clumsy booking, when they been given an advantage was then compounded by an even more ridiculous decision as he pulled his man back on half way. We had gained a men advantage and then he tossed it away.

Souza 6.5/10 – Not quite at his best, against a tough, mobile and energetic Sunderland midfield but much better as the game went on. Struggled to quite assert the same level of control he has had as they came through us and he was having to defend or sit in. Went to the centre back position briefly but then he came back into midfield and was much more his own self 2nd half. Won the ball more and was able to use it quicker and with more forward passed. Had a shot saved and was able to link well with others as we started to push them back. Got caught with a few bad fouls and not sure Ward gave him much protection.

Peck 6/10 – Ok with nothing awful but nothing outstanding. Thought first half we were nowhere close enough with the whole team playing badly but he did keep going and as the game went on, he became more involved with the ball and able to make more positive decisions occasionally but he was not able to influence games like he can.

Rak Sayki 6.5/10 – Not sure what got him the ball enough and it was often a long way from goal when he was given it. He did have a few decent runs and was always able to support a team’s attack – also had a role in a more central position. Came off as was not having the impact and the defence was really tightening up on him.

O’Hare 5/10 – Hard to really mark him. He was not involved or influential but not given the ball all half at all. He tried to press and work hard but was too high up to make a difference in terms of leading a press. He was not in the game much and rightly sacrificed at half time.

Hamer 6/10 –He had one of those frustrating nights where he did a lot of neat and tidy things but also gave it away a lot. His work off the ball and running to retrieve balls was excellent though and he does put a shift in He can still find a moment, so you kind of know why managers leave him on.

Campbell 4/10 –Thought he was not in the game at all. The ball kept coming back, he rarely linked or had any real moments. It did not stick with him although his run on the red card was a big moment. Surprised he stayed on as long as he did but then we have little (none) threat anywhere.

Subs -

Seriki 7/10 – Another really good showing. He came out and was able to get down the win and was a real outlet/threat. He did hold Watson up, who had been a revelation. He forced his man back, to the point he got took off, signalling Seriki had won his battle. He always looks to get at his man or force them turn the other way.

Davies 7/10 – Came on, got involved instantly with a few touches and then was right on the spot. Did well to get away and then such a good finish. Lovely to see his teammates celebrating with him on the goal and at full time.

One 6/10 – Put himself about and chased the loose balls. He won a corner and pressed when he could.

Norrington Davies – Only on right at the end so hard to really judge.

McCallum – As above.

Manager: Wilder 7/10 – Picked about his strongest side he could with those available. Thought that we were sluggish all over and never really came out and sat back, invited pressure. We did not win our races, battles, headers though to parlay a phrase. They were very good but we seemed to invite it on, rather than get up the field and let them worry about us. He did make changes and his subs have improved recently this season. His Seriki change has helped change two games for instance. Overall, to change the average age, bring players in, and completely change the outlook/defensive area (regardless of the decision). Credit to him for getting us right to the top

Sunderland – Pleased they have recovered from a rocky spell. They always seem a relatively likeable club that has had a rough time with some appalling owners and a number of managerial changes but seem a stable Championship club now. I did have them as perhaps a surprise pick for the play offs. I had heard good things about the coach, Regis Le Bris and felt they despite losing Clarke, they had recruited well with pace, power, and forward options. The home crowd is huge and makes them tough to beat at the Stadium of Light. However, I did not think they would be right at the top challenging the likes of Leeds, Burnley and us. They have stayed the pace and despite a lot of draws were unbeaten in ten coming into this game I believe going back to a defeat at Watford on the 28th Sept! That is a two month run and most impressive. They have not scored as many recently but the defence has been solid and their games have been really tight. Will they continue to remain near the top? Not sure but I do think they have enough energy and momentum to be a top 6 challenger, even if automatic I feel will still be a stretch.

They looked really full of energy tonight and were able to move it around at pace and get runners in. Young players Bellingham, Rigg and Watson were excellent in the first half and they should and could have led. The penalty was missed but they had other chances too. The red card will have been so frustrating as came out of nothing but a poor tackle but then they get it back to ten v ten. I thought second half, they did not quite have the energy of the first half and we started to win the midfield and slowly take over. They kept going and did have moves but not sure they had the same level of chances second half as they did first half. United actually pushed them back and the fluent and positive play and attacks they had started to reduce and the Blades had all the big chances and then of course got the vital goal. After this not sure they really mustered much and in the end go down to the defeat. Will definitely feel they deserved something and will be annoyed their excellent first half performance did not see them lead but you have to take advantage when on top. The goal was poor defending as two or three players should have cleared and he got in too easily.

As an aside, they have two great kids with the lovely Hummel home one and the away I quite like but the third was interesting to say the least and thought was like something you would see your Nan use as wallpaper on her wall!

Opponent Man of the Match – Bellingham was good and Rigg showed his ability on the ball but Watson was superb and a real surprise, as I did not know of him before tonight. He gave us a real going over until Seriki came on and got on top of him – he was then taken off.

Opponent Weak link – Mepham’s moment of madness should have cost them more than it did but then we did something equally stupid. Roberts missed a penalty and that was also so pivotal.

Referee/Officials – Gavin Ward. He refereed us in games against Reading (4-0) and (1-2) in the Championship and before that a 3-2 win at Barnsley but seems to have avoided us in recent years. I do recall seeing him in other games not involving us and being frustrated by him being too fussy. Now I recall why I felt that as he gave a completely frustrating game where it was so stop start. He probably had little choice on the red cards but a few other bookings seemed harsh and for me he just would not let the game flow. He was blowing constantly or going over and talking to players. He was getting stick from both sets of fans and often was so far behind the play, he was guessing stuff. He was a classic ref who went on players falling or crowd shouting. He did not seem to know what was going on much of the night and it just seemed he was bit too determined to be noticed. Just some bewildering decisions. The bookings on Hamer and One seemed harsh but he gave us decisons too - the corner when Hamer kicked it out. The back pass was surely an easy one to spot too? The one at the end where he booked Davies for daring to point out a player was 4 or 5 yards from the set play, was mind blowing! I was calling him various names at this point but the game ended soon after.

Crowd – Much better atmosphere than the flat and quiet game in the week. Sunderland always travel in big numbers and were supportive. They do have a fanatical and huge fanbase and were always going to sell the away end out, even a Friday night on Sky. They do always give their team a good backing and having watched, and enjoyed, the Sunderland Till I Die documentary it really is clear how important the club is to the fans and the area. United fans got ‘into it’ more after the penalty and then the red cards. They appreciated we had lost a few players due to having to rejig things again but also that we were trying to attack and be a lot more positive and the crowd responded giving them a lift. The goal saw the huge noise from most of the stadium and this was repeated on full time. If United have a go and try and win games and show the right attitude, then the fans respond. They realised we were second best, but that happens at times and we did improve a lot after the break and the fans knew there was a concerted effort to move further up, create more and we ended up with more chances. Can enjoy a few weeks off before returning to the Lane, after 2 games in 4 days!

The usual excellent write up DB. So quick off the mark.
I even enjoy the odd typo. I was into the third line of the paragraph trying to figure out who had an older kid called Hummel 😂

I’d say the markings are spot on, although I thought Peck had a better game than described against tough opposition.

I’ve seen Sunderland a few times this season and knew it wasn’t going to be a stroll.
They have a good, young team, and play some tidy stuff.
Bellingham is going to go far (maybe not as far as his brother) and Watson was a revelation in the first half and reminded us why Robbo struggled so badly in the Prem.
Souttar was also left for dead by Isidor’s speed and showed why he too struggled with Leicester.
Brilliant to grab the win though. The subs made the difference and that Seriki lad is a star in the making.

I think Sunderland will regroup and be back for top two contention. They have a solid squad of players and will be mightily pissed off they didn’t get at least a point today.

I thought we started ok first 10,but Sunderland took control of the game first half....we seem to struggle against high energy teams like them and Coventry who have plenty of runners and move the ball, but although Sunderland are a good side, they had no end product and didn't create that much.
Second half we improvedr and managed to find a way,the subs made a difference.
Great to get the win.

Excellent report and agree that we were 2nd best for long periods but we improved vastly after Seriki came on and we suddenly started to get forward quicker.

Thought Mepham was excellent till he had his moment of madness (get him in,quality cb)

Loved the players reaction to Tom Davies goal. The togetherness that Wilder instills is really impressive.

Thanks Deadbat. Great report.

Thought your ratings were spot on, other than Campbell who was less than 4. He did nothing. He has to work a lot harder in the lone striker role and hold the ball up. The fact he didn't do that created a problem right through the team.

Their number 40 (Watson?), stand in for Mundle was their driving force. Worth a look?

A few observations from the stats (making clear their limitations!):

- looking at any individual game, goal keeper stats can sometimes be a little meaningless, so I took a look at the season so far. Cooper has the highest save % in the division (82.1%) ahead of Trafford, Palmer and Johannsen (who I had expected us to buy). Cooper is 19th in saves per game (showing how good our defence has been); and perhaps as the best measure is 3rd in “goals prevented” with Johansson top.

- Looking at Footmob’s highest rated players of the season across the whole Championship, we have four in the top ten, Cooper at number 1, Burrows at 2, vini at 6 and Arbi at 8. Johnansson is at 3. Whoever identified Cooper as a signing and negotiated such a cheap deal deserves a bonus!

- back on looking just at last night’s stats, it shows the torrid and very busy time Gilchrist had, with most defensive contributions overall (11) and topping the successful tackle count (5, next best 3) and clearances (4). He certainly struggled with Watson who looked very dangerous but at least he kept plugging away and as deadbat says, Seriki’s arrival in the second half made a big difference. Indeed Seriki had second most successful tackles despite only coming on at half time.

- Robbo’s stats look a little odd. He made a foolish decision to dive in for the penalty when he should have kept his feet, and got a deserved yellow, and then got involved with grappling at a corner with the ref giving him a final warning. Both probably impacted on his stats which show he made no successful tables and made just one interception. But in the second half I thought he did ok!

- offensively, Seriki also put in most crosses and second most shots, again despite only playing the second half, showing his impact. Although the stats show we only had one successful cross all night, being ironically from Gilchrist. Although little came off for Hamer last night (with a relatively low pass completion rate of 75%), again he kept trying his heart out, and had most shots, most successful dribbles and joint most key passes.

- despite playing 76 mins, Campbell only touched the ball 14 times, making 6 passes (with a low completion rate). He’s a great goalscorer but I wish he was able to get more involved

Excellent report

I felt it was an evening where our obvious squad deficiencies made us fallable again. I.e. no outlet upfront, no pace going forward and no left winger. It all adds up and makes it easy for teams, hopefully that can in part be solved in the JTW

Cooper, what a signing. Credit to Wilder there, he understands how important getting the best keeper you can find in the side. Some managers don't seem to get that

Seriki - changed the game for us again and gets us on the front foot. He'll start against West Brom. If he does well their against experienced players in a good side, then I think we can't drop him.

Gilchrist - needed a first half and a second half rating. I thought he did well at centre half. That looked like his natural position. Hopefully his height won't matter

Hamer - if he could stop giving the ball away. then he'd be a premier league player. But he does far too often and it hurts us at times. Still that quick pass upto Campbell that resulted in Mepham getting a red card changed the game.

Campbell - he needs to develop his all round game. I think he knows that. We lacked a presence up front, and that harmed us tonight

Davies - as well as scoring. I thought he looked assured on the ball and experienced and intelligent. Hopefully he's the type of midfielder that can give us "control" in the middle of the park and we can avoid performances like we saw in the in first half where we had no control

I'm not really sure how Seriki gets 7. Defensively he was so far off his man they had free unchallenged crosses on several occasions. While he was much better getting forward he's a defender with defensive duties. Especially with more room on the pitch after the sendings off.

Also very generous to Robbo. Who both gave the penalty away and was a little fortunate to stay on the pitch. Not to mention looking so slow..

I can't fault the rest though and another excellent report.

Yes but….virtually every ball that went to him in the first half was 50-50 at best and he had some rough treatment from their CBs. Moore would have done better but the fault was really that our midfield had no control and the supply was poor.

Ratings are near enough spot on, though Cooper worth a 9 imo, Rak-Sakyi 6.5?, he was poor tonight, 5 at best, should have been taken off early second half as he was just watching the game rather than taking part, still a good win against a decent team and another clean sheet

Partly agree, but there were times when he needs to control the ball, look up, and decide what to do next. He often treats the ball like a hot potato, either instantly sending it back where it came from, or knocking it past the defender then chasing after it, often to no avail.

I'm not anti-Campbell and I appreciate his goal return, I just think that as lone striker he needs to hold the ball up better, and sometimes take the hit, painful though that is.

Through no fault of his own, that was a "Moore game" last night.
But, that's why it's good that (hopefully soon) we have them both.

Two comments. Thought Peck was poor first half gave ball away a few times. Second half and particularly as game progressed he was everywhere. Fantastic engine and energy. What a player he is becoming.
Siriki has got some criticism for defending but I thought he was a if not the major player that enabled us to take the initiative back. Great driving runs forward and taking on men, making himself available down the right wing and getting crosses in and so nearly scoring but for keepers leg. Gets a 8 from me. Love this kid.

Thanks Deadbat for another good report.

My thoughts the morning after:

Sunderland were really good to watch, away fans excellent. Must have been a good watch for the neutral.

Agree with those who pinpointed Watson as their standout player.

That said, although I spent most of the match thinking a point was the best we could hope for, they were a bit like an upgraded Swansea. Lots of possession and crisp passing but aside from the penalty, really Cooper wasn’t stretched. Compare with the two saves he made against Oxford on Tuesday for example. I think a few other teams will keep them at bay and sneak the odd goal before the end of the season.

We’re down to the bare bones, granted - but I thought Gilchrist and Robbo did fine at CB. Seriki at RB supporting JRS at WBA could be actually more solid than Gilchrist because it pushes the opponent LW back.

Was it their press or just an off day from our midfield? - most of the danger in the first half came from loose passes from us as opposed to their structured build-up. None of our ‘gamble’ passes came off. That said if just one had (if Campbell had evaded Mepham for example) then we’d have been happy with the ratio of success to failure.

All in all this morning my mood is now that we played a good side, but for all their endeavour they failed to hurt us and eventually one of our moves worked and that’s why we’re top and they aren’t.

This was a big result. If we hadn't won question marks about our ability to compete with the top sides in the division would have been raised after defeats to Weeds and Boro. Without Anel, Arblaster and Moore we struggled first half.

From minute 20 to 40 we were treading water as Sunderlands pace exposed our back line. Souttar and Robinson doesn't work. Souttar relies on Anels pace to cover behind him and looked uncertain throughout the first half. Anel also has the ability to bring the ball out and get us up the field to break the press. JLT is exposed to pace as the penalty showed. Burrows struggled with Roberts as did Gilchrist with Watson although JRS could have done more to protect him. Arblasters quick feet to break the press was sorely missed as Peck couldn't cope with the close attention of Sunlans midfield players. Souza looked tired from minute 1 with the third game in 6 days. Moores aerial ability that would have provided an out ball wasn't available and kicking the ball up in the air to Campbell was pointless. At half time we all would have taken a point.

Second half within seconds Seriki runs through the middle with only a deflection preventing Burrows opening the scoring. At 10 v 10 it was a different game. Seriki's pace gave them problems. Peck found more space and our fitness levels ground them down. Matt Prestridge deserves a lot of credit. As CW said there was only 1 winner from minute 70 and so it proved. Tactically second half we were superior as subs and time management were spot on. Even bringing on spring heeled Mac at the end to win balls in the air proved decisive. We really have improved this part of our game this season.

Credit again to the coaching staff in moving Sunlans defence around to give Seriki more space, they couldn't cope with his strength and running it was the difference second half. A very good 3 points with the huge bonus of Davis coming off the bench and scoring. A difficult game coming up without our 2 first choice centre backs out but no one can question our desire and team spirit at the moment.

Thought Sunderland played some lovely football during the middle section of that match.
At half-time a few of us on the Kop were saying we'd take a 0-0 draw.

However Sunderland tired badly and we came on strong in the last 20 minutes, think Sereki changed the game for us (again).
Love how he's so direct and simply runs at players with the ball. Brooks could learn something from him.

Regards Sunderland....was very impressed with their young winger Watson.
Also liked the look of Bellingham in midfield.....we all commented that he plays like his older famous brother and even runs like him.

It wasn't a "must win" game but it was a "must not lose" game for both sides, so I expected a 1-1 draw, delighted and surprised we won.

Entertaining game of end to end football that could have gone either way , the sendings off ( that were right ) in some respects spoilt the game but in others opened it right up . Without a doubt the turning point was the penalty save .. what a great save that was from Coops .
They are a good side to with some good young players like ourselves .. Watson & Bellingham imparticularly … was very surprised they took Watson off . The introduction of Seriki at HT helped us massively and credit to Gilchrist when he went to centre back .
MOTM for was Robbo , kept us solid when Souttar had gone .
Real gritty win that last night & pleased for Davies after all his injury woes ⚔️

Question.

Given that many of the Sunderland fans in the pre match Roy seemed to think they'd win because unlike WBA we'd have a go and subsequently get picked off, does anyone think part of our tactics were to sit in, let them tire, and then do the picking of ourselves?

Was that decision to sit in part of what caused our sloppy play as it isn't what the players instinctively want to do?

Obviously, events in the game and the fact we're all points on a forum render the question close to pointless, but there you go.

Good report. We were really poor from the 15th minute (after starting pretty well) to the hour mark. We didn't just play badly, we looked nervous and out of sorts and I was wondering if there were question marks about our mentality in big games.

But we showed real grit not to concede, keep ourselves in the game, and then dominate the last half an hour.

Like Deadbat, I was reminded of the 1-0 backs-against-the-wall win against Blackburn in 2022--the goalscorer that night was another Davies on a redemption arc!

Souttar had his worst performance in a Blades shirt. Absolutely no need to get that 2nd yellow. If we go in at halftime with 11 men that game goes on to be a comfortable 2-0.

Reda Khadra impressed that game for Rovers despite also missing a Pen

Indeed, for all the "we battered them" stuff they've been coming out with, it was mostly us being completely inept for a bit and them failing to capitalise. And, for a bit in the second half, if you'd just tuned in you'd be forgiven for thinking we were 3-0 down and had given up.

When we collectively realised that the game was actually still poised, we went out to win it, and managed to do so.

On that final point, I put in Shoutbox that it reminded me a lot of the "Chirpy Cunts" Blackburn game, one of my favourite otherwise innocuous fixtures ever.
