Before footballers made enough to never work again after they retired, many of them went on to run pubs.
Len Badger, Graham Shaw, after his stint in the market, and from the other lot we had Swan and Layne (yes I know) Harold Brook did well with multiple outlets selling the Star. From Manc City, Franny Lee helped wipe
our backsides with the bog roll caper and Wigan's Owner founded J.B. Sports.
Going back to the pub landlords, can we get a team up who played for the Blades?
I give you Fatty Faulke in goal, Shaw and Badger at full back. Seth King ran the Castle in Dykes Hall Road.
Who else would be in the boozers x1?

Tommy Hoyland whose son Jamie also played for United used to be landlord of The Sheldon. Also didn't Billy Whitehurst have the Cricketers for a while.

Didn't Geoff Salmons have a pub somewhere in the Dearne valley?

Billy Whitehurst?

Memory's shot.

Someone told my dad twenty odd years ago that Mick Jones ran a pub in Retford.

Bernard Shaw also ran a pub for years, in Baslow I think

Steve Cammack had the Princess Royal ,Bradders Mum and Dad had the Blue Bell.

Yes Billy ( tight shirt) Whitehouse did have the Cricketers.

Geoff Salmons still has the Pastures, between Kilnhurst and Hooten Roberts.

Tom McAlister use to have, i think it was called The Red Bull, near Rotherham railway station
shortly before he joined West Sham.
Went to a party there the night we lost to Chesterfield in the FA cup, when Alan Birch dived to win
a penalty for them in the last minute, came out of the ground wanting to kill him.
My mate invited me along with some of his friends one who turned out to be non other than Alan Birch
after drinking in his company all evening he turned out to be not such a bad guy after all.

Could not get him to admit to diving thou, but at the same time did not deny it either.

Harold Brook ran a sports outfitters with Jimmy Hagan on London Road for a number of years. They also used to serve in the shop as well.Well remember going in and the " great Jimmy Hagan" served me with some Subbuteo equipment for the table top game.
UTB

I cannot remember but in the 70's on a return journey from a away game we stoped for a drink in the Derby area as we entered the pub there was loads of Blades things the publican was an ex player forgot who :-( but we endered up staying longer than planned. Also remember in the 70's we played at Cardiff and a copper stood in the middle of the Blades fans he was also an ex Blades player.

Thanks for the clip Darren, much appreciated.

Yesteryear never a penalty, these days not so sure.

I was at the game and remember being equally certain in my 14 year old wisdom that it wasn't a pen. Again, it's less clear now.

Mind you, these days the Chesterfield no.2 taunting MacPhail and Birch taunting the Kop after he scored would seen yellows at the very least.

Kevin Gage stills runs a pub in Dronfield, well a hotel with bar and restaurant etc. Does that count? Sounds lovely!

It is i chat to Kevin quite a bit when i bump into him, i have eaten there a lot as well i would definitely recommend for anyone to try. Also he has run a few other pubs since retiring so he has to be in the 11. He and Tina ran pubs together then apart when they split.

One of the best moments in my Dad's life was apparently being served a carvery by Geoff Salmons.

That other Geoff, Hurst had a pub out in Derbyshire I think.

I thought that was quite funny when the Chessy No.2 took the piss out of MacPhail beating the ground in a kneeling position. I was at that game too but cannot remember the MacPhail incident - I remember the pain of the Penalty though. Not sure I went to the replay - can't remember ever seeing the Blades win at Saltergate - we were always shite there.

Weren't the standard of the pitches shocking in those days - yet they still contrived to play some football down the wings. Shit kit though, that Hobbot monstrosity - still got mine somewhere - fecking awful material as well

John Tudor ran a pub in Ilkeston for a short while apparently.

Willie Carlin ran a bar in Majorca for a while but I'm surprised he could see who he was serving unless he stood on a beer crate.

Gil Reece ran a hotel in Cardiff

Eddie Colquhoun runs (or ran) a WMC type place in the donny area.

He was the steward at the Ivanhoe WMC in Conisbrough, he finished there around two years ago, he can be seen in the Red Lion, Conisbrough. most sunday afternoons between 12:30 and 13:00.

Bill Brelsford (played in 1915 FA Cup final) owned a pub in the city centre. His party trick was to balance a coin upright on his head. He had a deep gauge on his head as a member of a notorious gang hit him over the head with an instrument for refusing to pay protection during the Sheffield Gang war years. Keeper Harold Gough was released by SUFC in 1924 because he insisted on living in a pub in Castleford (his family owned the pub). We won the FA Cup in 1925!
