Mr David Weir ????

Controversial I accept but hang on a minute.

Cant help but think that if there is in fact a turnaround in the clubs fortunes, a club that has at times in the last few year appeared to be cursed, that we will mostly accept that it was Mr D W 2 that was the catalyst for said turnaround.

Personally, I think that he is quite probably the most unlucky bloke in football right now, as he may well have been on the cusp of turning something that was downright rotten to the core in to something quite good.

Time will tell.

Time won't tell really. Whatever happens, you've no idea if it was down to Weir or not.

Personally, i don't think he had a clue what he was doing.

So you therefore must conclude that the upturn in fortunes had precisely squat to do with the bloke ?

Each to their own.

I do really, yes. Is it an upturn? We were pretty much about this standard before Weir showed up. He came in, we lost nearly every game. He went, we go back to being the mid-table team standard we were at the end of last season.

I think had Weir taken on the Everton job in the summer, he'd have done alright there: players he's familiar with, confident in playing his preferred system.

Instead, he comes to us wanting to change too much too quickly, manages players he's unfamiliar with and who aren't at all comfortable in the system he'd like to see. Had he been quicker to realise this, and more flexible, he'd perhaps still be here today. He'll probably learn from his mistakes ahead of his next job.

I think Weir was unlucky, probably tried too much too soon, but we'll never know if he was about to turn things around.

What we can say is that had the results not been so poor then we wouldn't have fired him and Clough certainly wouldn't be at the club now!

How much Clough was swayed by the new found money that we've got we'll also never know.

Lets hope that in April were sat here talking about an amazing season going from bottom to top two in a remarkable turn around.

We'd still lose the play offs!

...and away from the spotlight amongst the other 'coaching staff' - very much like Brian Kidd (still - amazingly) at Citeh.

Management for a first time was too big a step up for Weir and we haven't suddenly started picking up points since Weir left. Full credit to Morgs for handling the transition.

Weir signed thirteen players and only four of them started yesterday.

The only reason our fortunes have reversed is that we've gone back to basics with Wilson's players and Wilson's style of play.

We weren't a "rotten" team when he came in but we were by the time he left and showing no signs of improving.

Weir's biggest contribution to the club is that we hopefully won't go down the novice manager route again.

Amazingly?.. As a first team coach he´s considered top notch, he only looks uncomfortable doing interviews and stuff. But yeah, being a manager was not his thing really.

He was our coach under robson and we churned out football comparable with weirs , the most boring unproductive shit Ive ever seen

Weir signed some decent players though, its not as if they came to us as unknowns - the likes of Brandy, Coady, Cuvelier, Baxter and Lyle Taylor all came with good track records elsewhere or at least highly rated to do well at this level.

Morgan getting the players up for playing again and the boost that Cloughie brings will give us momentum for a few games. It's also added an edge of unpredictability to our game, because any scouting that teams have done on our tactics, style of play etc will have gone out of the window.

We need to see how Cloughies side will settle down in a few weeks, perhaps by Christmas we'll start to see the side and style that suits Cloughie.

Well he certainly looked 'comfortable' as he snoozed his way through matches (sat in the row in front of me) under Warnock and Robson.

I struggle to see what the signs of any turnaround were before DW2 was removed.

To the outside viewer it looked to all intents and purposes that he was headed one place and one place only, League 2

On top of that he seemed to have neither a plan B or a desire to switch things around if we weren't doing well. Combine this with a dearth of chances created, let alone goals scored and I think we have conclusive evidence that his way was the wrong way.

Since he's gone we've switched away from his system, played players he didn't (McGinn), created more chances, scored goals, put an unbeaten run together and won 2 games. All things that neither happened or looked likely in the previous 6 weeks.

I'm gutted I was wrong about DW2 - I thought he would be great when he was appointed. I'm just glad that acting quickly looks to have not just arrested the slide, but reversed the trend.

Seriously ? thanking weir for our turnaround is a bit like thanking hitler for woody allen

Yes and I suppose we can thank Hitler for the way in which West Germany prospered economically after WWII. After all, if Hitler hadn't taken power and led Germany to a disastrous war, the country would not have had to be reconstructed in the way it was.

Seriously, are you lot on drugs?

Thank you David Weir for crashing the company car and writing it off. It was running quite well before you started driving it.

Thankfully, since you fucked it up, we seem to have claimed for a new one and are starting again... Again.

I think in terms or recruitment and even tactics Weir was fine, the issue was getting the intensity up and getting the players confident to try the difficult things. Flynn and Taylor lately have shown how valuable confidence is.

We were one of the bottom clubs in the form table at the end of last season, so it can be argued that we just continued to slide under Weir.

He ended up making his players more worried about tactics and method than just getting on the fundamental stuff. Gradually the players lost all belief.

Good management is about simplifying the message, not complicating it.

Won't be a 'next job'

Weir has much to learn if he is to successfully make it into management
There are several qualities to being manager - unfortunately Mr Weir lacked most of them !
His record in recruitment will become apparent as the season pans out - at present only McGinn and Brandy looks OK, the rest the jury is out !
His tactics may have been fine for a Premier League side with some quality - our lot struggle to string three passes together without giving the ball away - In fact Doyle usually gives it away on his first touch !!
In life they say you make the best of what you have got ! Silk Purse out of a Sow'e Ear comes to mind!
No, sorry Mr Boreman, whilst confidence is an element - it is usually bred on comfort and most United 'players' were out of their 'comfort zone' with Mr Weirs tactics - they have neither the nous or the ability to play the way Mr Weir wanted to play - the Premier League is a million miles away from the rubbish served up in the Third Division - Horses for Courses - Mr Weir did not understand!

No he wasn't. He stuck dogmatically to one system, there were no tactics at all. Tactics are about playing in different ways or formations, like a game of chess, in an attempt to beat the opposition. The only tactic he had was to try different players playing the same style in the hope that it would click. Good managers can adapt styles of play and formations to suit. Weir couldn't do either. Way too pig headed.

Well, he´s highly regarded at our place..as a coach mind you, not as manager

Cuvelier and Baxter have proved themselves excellent players at this level. We just haven't, because of the circumstances surrounding them since their arrival, seen the best of them.

It's hugely unfair for anyone to write off two talented young footballers. They will shine bright for us, given time and patience.

Worst manager in our history. Boring dire football. Spend a lot in 13 games, left us bottom of the third division and knocked out of 2 cups to fourth division opposition. Made decent players look awful and refused to acknowledge he was wrong. Then raped the club of £1,000,000.

Good riddance and fuck off Weir.

He signed some decent players, that's it. He didn't have a clue how to use them properly and attempted too many radical changes far too quickly. He also had no idea how to put the brakes on and simplify things when it wasn't working.

In the long run we might be able to thank him for Lyle Taylor, Jose Baxter, Florent Cuvelier and Febian Brandy etc. who all have the potential to be good players for the club. If that happens then all it proves is that he's a good scout.

Depends if you believe that Weir knew about these players to buy them. I would imagine Baxter is about the only one he might have had a say in. The others came from our own scouting of the best players in our division.
