Who are your personal Blades heroes-Top 5

Colin Morris, (I actually used to wish my legs were bowed when I was 10)
Keith Waugh ( I was a goalie at school)
Bob Hatton
Brian Deane
Keith Edwards

Not my greatest 5 but 5 that were really special favourites of mine:

Tony Currie
Brian Deane
Keith Edwards
Willie Carlin
Colin Addison

Many, many more had to be (tearfully) left out.

I was a huge fan of Ian Rush when I was growing up, it was amazing to see him in a blades shirt. You could still see that his first touch was class, although he was a bit toss for us.

1. Alan Woodward. Unconventional, stocky, not built for speed - yet deceptively nimble, but great footballing brain, powerful player and epitomised everything about a player who loves the game and his club.

2. Tony Currie. The vinegar to the salt of Woodward. Louche, talented, clever and a person who deservedly had every person in BDTBL singing his name, because he was exciting, unpredictable and skilful.

3. Michael Brown. Confounded those who sold him and passed him on by being the best box-to-box all-rounder I think we have seen in our colours in modern times. The 2002-03 season was all his. Without him, we would have been also-rans. Aside from his unbelievable goal vs the Pigs at the Lane, the away game at Fratton Park that season was possibly one of the best performances I have seen a United player put in. Pompey, as good as they were then, didn't know what to do with him.

4. Phil Jagielka. From a boy-player to a tour-de-force for us (frustratingly never played consistently enough) but now showing what a real gem we used to have in our back four. His tackling, composure and ability to drive forward and lamp it from range was outstanding.

5. Brian Deane. Reluctantly, due to his propensity to bugger off when we needed him the most. But you can't takeaway his unbelievable strike rate and ability as a centre forward. Your typical tough, hard to get the better of front man with quick feet, good aerial ability and everything Porter isn't, in fact.

pommpey

Michael Brown and his type will be long gone if Weir and his like get their way ,no room for a box to box midfielder ,one of the main reasons Im glad he got sacked.

Mine :
Gil Reece
Bob Hatton
Michael Brown
Tony Kenworthy
Neil Warnock.

As Walthy says, heroes are those who played when you were in childhood. Later in life it's admiration and respect for ability.

Agreed.

Mine would be.

1. Alan Woodward - when I was little I played right wing and in the 60's he was the guy for me. Later when I saw the man play he was just phenomenal and the footballing relationship with Currie was a joy to watch. His power, accuracy and general sportsmanship was something I admired.

2. Tom McAllister - I then moved to play in goal and this guy I thought was the bees knees. I remember his double penalty save against Derby County, one of our 'away' bogey teams. Very sad when Marsh basically ended his Blades career, though he went on to Rotherham and West Ham.

3. Tony Currie - genius. As I recall at the Crystal Palace game that was postponed about 20 mins before the start in the early 70's popularly referred to as the Messiah!

4. Keith Edwards - what a goal scorer. The game is all about goals. These guy knew where the net was. A goalhanger maybe but he could score.

5. Brian Deane - best black player ever for SUFC, a real gent, hope he does well in his new career. A legend. Deeano! Who can forget his goal against Gobbelaar.

As Walthy says, heroes are those who played when you were in childhood. Later in life it's admiration and respect for ability. Consequently my heroes would be:

1. TC and Woody. You can't have one without the other. Style, poise, power, ability, shooting, passing, vision. Complete package in only two players.

2. Trevor Hockey. For the above two to play you need the ball. Enter Hockey-hi.

3. Bill Dearden. Biggest heart in a player ever. He could finish as well.

4. Len Badger. How the fuck did he not play for England?

5. Tom McAllister. But for injury would have been one of the keeper greats in the game.
Shit. Snap. Word for word. :)

1 Hodgy (who else would you expect me to pick?)
2 Joe Shaw
2 TC
3 Alan Woodward
4 Brian Deane
5 Phil Jagielka

For any Blade of a 'certain age', there's only one: Jimmy Hagan

IMO Hagan was /is head and shoulders above all who came later. Superb ball control and a thought process that was 4 moves in front of his team mates.
He declined to sign for the Wendy, when no doubt the Board were pressing him to do so.
He then, as everyone knows, went on to be a great manager
Joe Shaw
Brian Deane
T.C.
Woody

1. Brian Deane - best all round player
2. Keith Edwards - best finisher
3. Michael Brown - fantastic goals and carried us at times
4. Alan Kelly - best keeper
5. Bobby Davison - scored 2 in the best game I've seen against the pigs

Yes, because he did it on purpose, didn't he?

I'd like to think not but it was a totally unnecessary & ludicrous hand ball that had dire consequences for us. And since Jags has left he has come across as a bit full of himself and has never had a good word to say about us - in stark contrast to someone like Kyle Walker.

1, Deane
2, Kelly
3, Jags
4, Brown
5, Whitehouse

There are a few others I'd like to pick based on the talent they had, or the entertainment they brought, but these five contributed most to the successful years I've seen as a fan.

Thinking back to what I thought at the time they played, my five would probably be:

Deane - the obvious choice for any kid just starting to watch us, most of my earliest United memories are Deane-related.

Pembo - the other post on players you shared a birthday with reminded me that for 3 seasons he was my favourite player, for no other reason that we shared a birthday. His winning penalty vs Blackburn in the shoot out a great moment.

Flo - first ever name on a shirt, I always inexplicably liked him despite his mixed performances for us and his lack of pace on Sensible World of Soccer.

Kelly - thought he was fantastic, was gutted when he was sold as I thought at the time he'd play for us till he retired aged 45.

Walker (Andy) - thought he was a brilliant poacher, helped save us, and remember being really annoyed when he wasn't given much time at Wembley.

I'd say after that they moved to being favourite players rather than heroes. Vas, Jags, Kenny, Macca an Geary would be on that list...

1) Keith Edwards (scored all 4 goals against Gillingham at my first game at BDTBL)
2) Brian Deane
3) Dane Whitehouse
4) Phil Jagielka
5) Chris Morgan

I did see a bit of TC and Woody, but still consider them before my time.I'll go; Edwards, Morris, Stancliffe, Deano and..I'm not sure..maybe Kenworthy, big John McPhail, Cockerill, Whitehouse, Kelly, Jags, Morgan.

Whitehouse
Deane
Borbokis
Edwards
Simon Kelly-Rees

For an old codger, Dean Saunders did surprisingly well for us. Lets be honest, we all thought he would be yet another retiring superstar getting one last payday. Everybody had visions of Ian Rush plodding around like an old man in the 5 a-sides. Nobody would have thought he would become an honorary "Deano" like he did. Plus he got an assist off the goalies bum! (probably his back really but bum sounds better)
