Free Kick Goals

I can remember a Edwards free kick away at Grimsby, did Steve Foley score one? Mark Dempsey also scored one. In the Bassett years can't recall any until we got to Vas Borbokis in 97/98. There must have been someone else in the 80s and 90s.

I seem to remember Mitch Ward and Whitehouse scoring a couple.

Didn't Mike 'Zico' Lake hit a rip arser of a direct free kick for us... possibly 2...I know he scored a few long range net busters.

I’m guessing the alternative to a direct free kick would be a cross into the box, I wonder what the success rate is for that?
If the alternative is the ball flying into the stand (which seems to happen at least 50% of the time) it's not worth it. If the ball hits the wall or the keeper is forced to make a save, the ball is back in play in the penalty area and there's still a possibility that a goal (or corner) could result.

Players taking free kicks should always be told to err on the side of hitting the wall, not missing the target completely.

The best option statistically would seem to be just to pass the ball and generate an open play situation in opposition final 3rd, why teams don't do that I've no idea... The % of goals scored from crosses or set-play crosses is higher than direct free-kicks, but is still much lower than goals from open play

3 minutes in, Fleck V Pigs was a great free kick routine, faux confusion, before being firmly dispatched passed the hapless Westwood 🤣
Michael Tonge at the Rust Bucket...

Lee Williamson also scored a free kick for us against Wednesday at Hillsborough in 2010.

Two years later he hit the bar with another free kick at Hillsborough when we played them in League One.

First rule in my opinion, make the goalie work. Concentrate on getting it on target then anything can happen

Was there for both of them.

I’d swear the one against Burnley was more than 25 yards out though. Seemed a lot further although I know we were at the opposite end of the ground
Yeah so was I. Memory very hazy I will be honest I was reacting with the crowd as didn’t see the Burnley one go in but wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than 30 yards

Last time I felt confident we’d score from a free kick was the interchangeable combo of Brown and Tonge between 2002-2004. What in gods green earth made them allow Tommy fucking Mooney to take it against Liverpool.

Tonge scored a great free kick against Cardiff at home. Technically a wonderful player, I thought he was going to go to the very top!

Have we ever scored from an indirect freekick?

Also, who's idea was it for Tommy Mooney to take the free-kick at Anfield in the League Cup semi-final?

Brown was going to take that free kick at Anfield but Mooney insisted on taking it despite that he had just come on as sub. What a wanker!

Don Hutchison scored one against Luton after a back pass, I think.

Brown scored five free kicks just in the 2002-03 season which is incredible.

I'm pretty sure Tonge and Beattie scored three each in their time with us.

Beattie might have managed it in consecutive games, or near enough.

Bring back funky free kicks like this one against Charlton at 37 seconds in. As you can tell by the delayed reaction those of us in the away end were also slightly caught unaware

I don't understand why these routines were one-offs considering they worked pretty bloody well!

Think Tonge may have got 4 or 5. I seem to remember him scoring one on the last day of the season against someone too.

Tonge was a technically gifted player, just too inconsistent. Even in his breakthrough 02-03 season he went off the boil after Christmas. His performance at home against Millwall in that season is still one of the best individual performances by a player I've seen for United.

Wednesday away, West Ham at home, Cardiff at home and Gillingham away early in his career that I can think of. I might be missing a couple.

I think part of it is that when you have teams now lined up with a wall you have a good opportunity to break. Liverpool are the current masters of being a threat from set pieces against them, same way against Hull we scored two essentially off of their corners. Teams are so threatening on the counter that shooting direct and clearing the wall probably isn't sacrificing much of your chances (set pieces aren't much more successful) but taking away the risk of a counter.

Another one: Duffy at Rochdale in the 3-3 draw in Wilder's first season.
