In a new (probably dull) occasional (!) feature (may not appear every week); I will try and round up the happenings around the leagues of various former Blades.

It is rather nattily entitled: Former Blades round up. Innovation at its best.

Some may say they don't play for us anymore so who cares.....they may have a point but some may have some interest!

Feel free to chip in on any I have missed.

Championship

In the Championship former Blades loanee Kyle Bartley made his debut for Birmingham (on loan from Swansea) as they went down to a 1-0 defeat against Watford at home whilst another ex loanee Keith Treacy was an unused sub as Burnley drew 1-1 with Bolton but Sam Vokes did start for Burnley. Jacob Mellis played as Barnsley got a good going over at home to Wigan. John Cofie was an unused sub for the Tykes.

Simon Francis started for Bournemouth as they returned to the second tier with a victory over Charlton. David Cotterill assisted on a goal for Doncaster but they went down 3-1 at home to Blackpool where former Blades loannee Matt Phillips was missing with injury. One time Blades target Mark Duffy made his debut for Rovers after singing from Scunthorpe.

Leeds featured numerous ex Blades as Paddy Kenny made a crucial save at 1-1 as Leeds went onto beat Brighton. Michael Tonge also started and Dominic Poleon came off the bench and was impressive in his brief cameo. Michael Brown is still at Elland Road and was an unused sub.

Ritchie De Laet began at full back as Leicester won at Middlesbrough. Shaun Derry was on the bench for QPR who beat Wednesday. Nick Blackman was missing for Reading as he was suspended for the incident at Scunthorpe nearly a year ago (when he went into the crowd - altercation with a policeman).

Shane Lowry played for Millwall who lost to our conquerors in the playoffs Yeovil whilst at the City Ground Andy Reid started for Forest with Greg Halford and Darius Henderson on the bench. At nearly 42 Ian Bennett is still at Huddersfield backing up Alex Smithies.

League One

Bradford began life after promotion with a draw at Bristol and began with former Blades Mark Yeates and Andrew Davies. They also had Kyel Reid on the bench.

Paul Thirwell was an unused sub for Carlisle who were hammered by Orient. Kyle McFadzean was back at the centre of the Crawley defence as they beat Coventry. Claude Davis saw his Rotherham side bounce back from 2-0 and 301 down to earn a 3-3 draw at Crewe.

Former Blades trainee Chris Robertson made his debut for Port Vale who earned a creditable draw with Brentford at Vale Park.

Cark Ikembe started in goal in preference to Wayne Hennessy for Wolves who drew at Preston. Danny Batth started for Wolves. Preston started former Blades YTS player Kevin Davies after his signing from Bolton.

Evan Horwood made his debut for Tranmere who went down at Walsall where Ben Purkiss was on the bench. David McAllister was on the bench as Shrewsbury held MK Dons. Sam Wedgbury and Connor Brown; two former Academy players faced off in a thriller that saw Oldham win a game of 7 goals against Stevenage.

League Two

James Beattie made a disastrous start to his managerial carer as newcomers Newport put them to the sword. Adam Chapman (once Kyle Walker's centre back partner at Academy level) made his debut for Newport. Beattie's old mate Danny Webber did score a consolation for Accrington though where he made his debut.

It was not much better for Johannes Ertl who was sent off for Portsmouth in their own opening day shocker where Dave Kitson started for Chris Wilder's Oxford. It was a less than happy day for another former Blades manager Kevin Blackwell whose reshaped Bury went down to Chesterfield at Gigg Lane.

Richard Cresswell's knock down gave York a late winner past Matt Duke and Northampton . Jon Joe O'Toole started for Bristol Rovers who went down to defeat at Exeter. Big spending Fleetwood won on opening day and former Blades youth centre back Ryan Cresswell debuted and scored after signing from Southend in the summer. Former Blades left back Stephen Jordan also played for Fleetwood.

Simon Walton was on the bench as Hartlepool got trounced at Rochdale whilst Jordan Chappel was an unused substitute for Torquay who drew with Wimbledon. Likewise for Jake Speight for Mansfield who went down at Scunthorpe.

Scotland

Anthony Stokes scored twice for Celtic against plucky Ross County who had former Blades trialist Steven Saunders on the bench. Barry Robson started for Aberdeen who beat Kilmarnock. Reported Blades target Kris Boyd scored for the visitors.

Good little read that Deadbat thanks for that.

Overall seems like a bit of a sheety week for ex Blades.

One realization for me out of all of the above and that is I wouldn't have a single one of the above players back. I wouldn't have minded Cott's back last year but I'm happy with what we have at options wise this year.

Paddy would still walk into the team.

Impressive. There are names in there I don't think I have ever heard off. Maybe the beer is affecting my memory.

Philips, Blackman, Halford and Reid definitely.
I'd have Tonge and Cotterill back also.

Id drive to Andy Reids house and pick him up immeadietly.

Out of that lot, for our current team I'd take Reid, Halford, Phillips, Bartley, Cotts, Hendo and a couple of others for the bench.

I went to dirty Leeds v Brighton yesterday (free ticket don't worry) and Kenny made three good saves,of which I thought two were game changing ones. His distribution was toss but I still think he's a really good keeper. He even had his own song "Paddy Kenny is having a party, bring some vodka and your Charlie".

Tongue looked competent without being particularly influential. He's got a good brain on him. Still can't tackle.

Best player for me was the lad they signed from Crewe. He looks very good.

Luke murphy , premiership player in my opinion.
Quality stuff Deadbat ,loved this.

67 year old Paul Thirlwell still playing for Carlisle ??

I would pay for this kind of Information , altogether like this [saves me hours ] but what happened to Andy Taylor ?

He was doing well with Walsall last season, I think he's picked up an injury in pre-season though so didn't take part this weekend.

I notice Matty Harriot hasn't found a club yet.
It seems a shame as he probably would have suited the new style of football very well.
Did Weir make the decision on him or had he already left before Weir was appointed?

He did have a trial at Palace but unsurprisingly it didn't work out.

If I remember rightly he left before Weir was appointed. I spoke to someone on Twitter about this and I reckon it was partially his choice to leave to try and get regular football. I'm sure we could have kept him on for another month on a non-contract basis to be assessed by the new staff.

Is Harriott Jordan Chappell mark II. :-) ?

He had been around the first team for almost 3 years, was nearly 21 and had made the grand total of two league appearances, whilst younger players (Maguire and Long) had become regular first teamers.

All the evidence suggests he wasn't good enough for the 3rd division - his last loan speall was at Alfreton after all...

He must be kicking himself now then!
Before I get slated, I'm not saying he's a World-Beater it just seems to me he would be perfect cover for the McGinn/Doyle/Coady role.
Also, he would be on low wages which as he's home-grown possibly wouldn't count under FFP rules?
Edit: Too late

I'm not suggesting by any stretch that he would have been good enough, I just thought he might have waited to see what the new manager thought of him.

I thought he was going to break in the first season in League One after being around the fringes towards the end of the Championship season, but he didn't really get near so I think the writing was on the wall for him. I'd say it's the main reason he'd choose to leave if that was infact the case.

We did sign him from Luton as a 17 year old so I'm not sure if he'd be classed as trained by us, but his wages will certainly have been low. Like we've all said though, he probably wasn't good enough and since Weir has come in he's said he doesn't want players that make up the numbers, he wants players who can all compete for a place and I don't think Harriott would be better than 5th choice now.

Looks like Billy Sharp is being linked to the sty at S6 again.

Sorry Houso, I misread your post. I thought you said "A couple of others for the beach" I thought that I'd worked the two out on the list.

Interesting to see Danny Webber at Accrinton. He's not a out-and-out striker, but he's got more of an eye for goal than some players and I'd be happy to see him on our bench.

Do you live in Leeds, Diplo?

Nah, Hunters Bar. My neighbour's boyfriend is from up there (Horsforth) and has a season ticket this year with a friend who couldn't go. I used it partly due to a morbid curiosity as to what it's like sitting among them and partly because I like free stuff.

I was at College in Horsforth - Trinity and All Saints - class of 69!
