You make it sound as if it was all somehow interlinked. He wasn’t exactly signing the contract in the dressing room as Billy dripped claret on the dressing room floor!
You have to admit, he was magnificent for us for a whole season and him and his Mrs really bought into the club. Missing a penalty doesn’t tarnish that. He didn’t do it on purpose. It happens. It was an opportunity to give him a clap for that.
He completed his loan and then got told by his parent club he wasn’t wanted, or at least due to FFP, they’d accept bids.
One club, also offering Premiership football and no doubt better wages, and a manager he’d played for before, came in for him, so he signed.
He didn’t sign direct from us. He wasn’t wanted by his parent club, and it was one dolt amongst their fans who assaulted Billy. It wasn’t Steve Cooper!
People can express themselves how they want, but to not be appreciative of his massive contribution is a little sad.
What happened since is a path any footballer would have trodden in the exact circumstances.
Same with those fans booing Berge. We’d hawked him around every window yet he’d remained professional. He even scored the goal that sent us up. We wanted the cash because he didn’t want to remain at such a car crash and good luck to him.
So I did expect some boos, because some fans are unable to see the bigger picture and expect every player to have the same sort of affiliation as Dane Whitehouse.
Once John Dennis the former Barnsley owner bought some new vans for his grocery business and a fan rung up praise or grumble and said he had no business buying new vans while Barnsley still needed a new striker!
To me that’s a bit thick.
The good news is that being a bit thick can be a passing phase and doesn’t need to be permanent unless you attend Hillsborough, in which case it is probably irredeemable
