If we had a realistic chance of staying up there would have been more activity. Looks like we're accepting relegation now and planning for next season. No point in paying wages from January. Get a few decent players in this summer and we should be good enough to challenge again.

Agree - so we are waiting our money on Holgate

Is Holgate really that bad?

The crap he’s getting from most in here is as bad as Harry Maguire getting it from ManU lot…the difference being he’s not even arrived here yet.

Sometimes players struggle with certain teams, lose confidence and then just never recover. What’s to say he doesn’t come back to S Yorks and settle down back to his best? Playing in a way that suits him and his style of play.

Let’s be right though, from what I’ve seen of the back line this season, he cannot possibly do any worse that those who’ve been playing to now.
Anel has shocked me how bad he’s been, and was perhaps shielded last season by his attacking play because it seems he’s very weak, poor positionally and lacks a bit of fight!
Robbo- so basic that it is great he might occasionally do a huge tackle and get the blocks in but he’s poor with the ball.
Trusty- Positionally all over the place in a 4, too big for Lb as he’s not quick enough with his feet and also struggles with all but the basic sideways pass across the back line. Decision making poor dives in when he should jockey, stands off when he should attack it.

Egan- seems he may still be the best we’ve got. But looked poor when he played though may have been due to his playing partners too.

So for me we are due a refresh, start from scratch. If we can sell Anel then all well and good, he’s been poor and looks like he wants out.

whether its holgate, worrall or 1 wouldve preferred souttar. ill judge them on pitch. i know this is extremely boring for a forum, but i dont get all the negative pre conceived notions before a player has set foot in the door,

because over the too many years that i & we supported the blades. ive seen well known names & big names from premier league come & fail. ive seen people ive never heard of or players i thought we're beneath us, succeed. look in 2014 & 2015, Che adams from ilkeston came & was outstanding straight away, dean hammond premier league winner 1 of worst players

They were donkeys at the back at Forect against Osula and Traore and he was one of them. "Forest: Turner, Worrall, Mangala (Yates 69)"
Last thing we need is a donkey tugboat at the back with moronic tactics as against a Man City when we had a backline just 15 yards behind their back player unmpressured on the ball.

We need to revert to 5 at the back to have wide players to stop crosses.
We have been poor in the air at CB since 'biggest' player OConnell stopped playing. Holgate is not big enough and would just be coming to make up numbers - which is admittedly needed but not at ANY cost.
Worral, donkey. Already seen this season against us.
Souttar (big I think) Would seem to be the 'best' option without knowing much about him except fee.

Yes, so you said :)

Been praying for no outgoings since Wilder ludicrously appointed despite his BS of 'he can keep us up'.
Got our future out the door in the first few weeks of his last arrival (future Internationals Che Adams, DCL and Ramsdale) - was going to loan Brookes to 4th division strugglers before starred with England U-21 and RND played for Wales before him at #sufc and signed Keane Bryant was it and Arthur Lowe rather than play him.
And that's just the start of Wilders total ignorance on young players.
After Tuesday worried about McAtee off NOW as well - if you can't see why you are stupid and incompetent as the clowns ruining this club.

reports of Newcastle sniffing around Blaster ,dont like that

Dont like it one bit but unless we tie him down to a long term deal he will go for peanuts too!
if true and he goes yet another example of not tying a good player down letting his contract run down

Bit of ITK from agent Jelly…….

Our Chairman accepted relegation, before a ball was kicked this season!
Only team in Prem history to weaken a promotion winning side, in advance of playing in the Premiership.Shameful.

Another super positive thread :D Oh! the joys of transfer deadline day 🤣

I’m definitely glass half full when it comes to the Blades. My comments on Holgate on the other thread were more around not being sure he is the player we need right now.

The OP was saying we need a leader which I agreed with, someone like a Chris Morgan type, blood and guts, if I’m going dow you’re coming with me type.

It wasn’t any slur on Holgates ability as a player as I always like to give players a chance ( as per my posts on the Slimane thread ) but I don’t see him as that kind of leader, more an extra body through the door type signing

So we were unable to do Souttar and Worrall 😂

We really are a banter club

Did you not see him on MOTD last weekend… he was worse than awful. Watch it on iPlayer and you’ll see for yourself. I can’t verbally do it justice

HM or MH?

Which ever it was I didn’t, but I did see my own teams centre backs play more than a few highlights and I can be sure he can’t be as bad as they have consistently been.

What he may be is rusty, he’s not played a lot. He may be unhappy where he is, and he may take a good while to settle in to the club.

The only thing I will agree on is that he’s not a player that saves us.
We needed more than 1 defender, we needed a keeper who saves shots, at least two defenders and probably 2 midfielders who can pass it quick and keep the ball. As well
As some creativity at the top, athleticism and pace.
We were buggered in August, not January though so Wilder will escape any real criticism for this one.its all on the Board and owner for me.

No need to panic. If he goes, we've lined Dave Kitson up 👍🤞🫶

Seriously what exactly did you expect?
I think this is THE valid question.

Because depending on how you answer it, either you are unrealistic of the club’s finances and overall situation or you are not.

Wilder wanted 3 or 4. He got 4 new players, 3 of which you’d definitely say can be seen as first team options. So it’s not like we didn’t meet expectations in terms of doing something.

Inauspicious start granted, but a keeper from a European powerhouse who has International Caps, for a reasonable fee. We knew we needed a new keeper. So what were we expecting? As a gauge, Palace wanted 15m for Sam Johnstone. So what was a realistic sure-fire alternative that we were expecting? Forest spent 8m on a 31 year old just yesterday.

We just signed Mason Holgate on loan. He’s had a loan that didn’t work out at Saints. Before that he’s racked up 126 PL appearances, 149 in total at Everton and starred under Ancelotti. At 1.87m and having played right back, centre back and defensive midfield, he’s the identikit of a player you’d need to replace Basham. It also means we have not been bullied to commit funds on a perm we might not have wanted to. It also means Anel will play more at CB, where he has done better against higher quality opposition. So who did we expect? Souttar is out of favour with Leicester, not played for his club since October and already failed to nail a spot in a relegation campaign. Until the last minute, Worrall wasn’t available for loan and it may have meant rushing a decision on Egan, which we were perhaps not prepared to do. Godfrey ceased to be available. So, again, who did we expect within our budget? Who signed better? Burnley again signed some European random, Everton signed nobody, Forest signed no defenders and let their best defensive foil, Mangala, leave. Holgate is probably, alongside Davies, the most experienced Premier League player we have bought across 3 PL campaigns.

Brereton-Diaz has looked excellent and was out of reach in the summer.

We also fetched in a guy who was highly rated and at 18 can play both CB and RB, so I dare say RCB if we needed future succession planning.

We tied down so far Osula, Brooks, Seriki, Hackford and Buyabu with the promise of more to follow.

We offloaded Neal, Dewhurst and Potter whose progress had stalled, and we moved on Fleck’s decent wages too, sent Troare to play some football and curtailed the unsuccessful loan of Luke Thomas. We then found loans for Seriki, Sachdev, Buyabu, Boyes, Maguire and Hackford.

For me it’s a 7/10. We got players in positions we wanted and we didn’t offload any key players. We placed some young guys to develop them and we trimmed the wage bill of players who may have not gotten minutes. A sensible window, if not an eye catching one some may have unrealistically hoped for!
