If we are thinking pragmatically, surely Kenny Jackett would be a better option than a lot of names mentioned? Not too sure about the style of football though!

I think he's had about 4 promotions - all with limited resource. True, you will be able to find some downside, but if you've been around a bit, and had little resource, that's inevitable.

When Southgate's a candidate (all downside with lots of resource), I'd have to say GJ should be streets ahead in the reckoning.

He's one of those managers who belongs to a particular time and place. Yesterday and far away from here.
 
McCall stands out head and shoulders with regards to possibility of getting him, him being decent and having something of a track record.

So we won't get him then :)
 
Surprised Terry Butcher hasn't been mentioned, almost took the Barnsley job earlier on in the season.

Done a great job at Inverness this season but he isn't good enough for United imo.

Would you leave (if they go up) Championship Yeovil for League One fuck up club Sheffield United? I wouldn't.

Probably because Barnsley are far more attractive a club than we are right now.

True, but like Howe at Bournemouth, he has an affinity with them and if they go up, no chance, if they don't, he'd still be safer staying with them, the same way S'OD used to think when he was at Donny.

The problem we have is that it's not as simple as having limited resources. It's sometimes easier to build a 15 man squad spending £300K on wages than if you need to do the same when 10 of the squad already take up £280K of it as is / was the case with us.
 
Surprised Russell Slade's name is not on that list with his ex united connections and doing a decent job at Leyton Orient this year.

As some will remember, I pushed for Macca when Warnock left but again, why would he leave a team he's taken to runners-up in the Scottish Prem and Europe next season to work for a bloke who didn't think he was up to it 6 years ago. Fair enough, if McCabe opted not to go for him because of experience but from what I can remember, our Stuart wasn't overly impressed with the way McCabe treated him.

Kenny jackett has only jacked for the wolves job
 



I think from that list my 1st choice would be Owen Coyle, then McCall. But why would Coyle want the job? Millwall or Wolves would offer him more money. McCall might be tempted due to his Blades connections, but maybe McCabe's soured that relationship?

Well, Ian Porterfield left recently promoted to the second tier Rotherham to manage recently relegated to the 4th tier Sheffield United in 1981. No doubt a large wad of cash and a 10 year contract helped. I suspect a similar inducement would help persuade Johnson to move (though not a 10 year contract!)

Might be interesting to see how other managerial positions being available impacts on our search. I can't see how the job can be anything other than unattractive in the extreme.
"Here you go then, you've got expectant and pissed-off fans, no squad to work with, the few good players you've got I'm going to sell, if you find some new good players and they become our top scorers etc., I'll sell them in January, you'll have no money to spend though, and oh yes I forgot if you somehow still get us into the play-off places I'll sack you with five games to go because we weren't champions by February. I think the stresses of modern football management are overplayed.

They generally get a 3 year contract, and expect to work half of it, presumably for 3 years pay. Most would kill for it.

The shit they get is limited to 90 minutes a week. The rest of the time is a breeze.

When it turns to shit for them, they go and sit on a beach with a wad of cash, or spout bollocks on Sky for even more cash. It's us who have to "pay" for the consequences, as we are still doing for Bryan Robson's mistakes (let alone his successors).

I know I am going to regret this, but here goes anyway, have we previous with Martin Allen? Its just that he is constantly abused and he has just got a club with limited resources up a division by winning the league and every time I see their highlights they always seem to have a pacey side that look exciting to watch.
I am not nailing any colours to any masts but just wondered why he seems so disliked

Mind you, I could be wrong on the cheap front. One assumes he has got a massive pay off from Wolves, so he could just sit on his arse and play football manager all day. It depends how much he wants to pursue a career in real football management. Given his record at Doncaster and Wolves he is not going to get a job in Division 2 and, despite how relatively shit we are - Wolves apart - we are the biggest club in the third division. If he wants to resuurect his reputation he should jump at the United job, even if we offer him peanuts.

My humch though is that Saunders will feel it beneath his dignity to accept peanuts and will just sit at home and eat his Wolves' gold if we don't match his "expectations". Which would be a good thing, all told.

Harry Haslam was very good at Luton (their average attendances were terrible) and you know how he did with us. No thanks to Gary Johnson.
