I don't think United helped. The Last Post should be played (that way the crowd would naturally fall silent) immediately followed by the minutes silence and the ref. blows his whistle to indicate it's over. No need for the over-complication by adding 'Reveille' at the end (which is used to wake up military personnel at sunrise). It might help if Sinclair learned how to pronounce it.

Instead we start with the last post and when it ends try to start the minutes silence, but unless you were there half an hour before kick off to hear GS explain all this people automatically assume it's over when the last posts finishes and start cheering.

I agree. We've got the bugler, then the silence and then the bugler and then it's over. Far too complex to expect 30,000 people, many of whom don't know the drill to follow that immaculately. It does feel like a Gary Sinclair special, doesn't it

The point of the tribute is to pay respects and show the right sentiment and I think the vast majority of both sets of fans were in the spirit of it. In future lets keep it simple, allow the fans to pay respect and then get on with the game.
 
i was coming up the steps and most people (me included) couldn’t understand the blockage as we thought we’d missed the start..we couldn’t see what was going on inside the ground obviously
anyone making a sound was quite aggressively shushed
united are also partly to blame they should have stressed what would be going on not having an announcement to a half empty stadium

That's what I thought Pommpey. The croud noise was clearly pre-recorded. If you listened very carefully it looped. It's what Sky use to drown out chants they don't like. I think they used it when Leeds were chanting abuse at Sky.

Perhaps it's my army background, but anyone who has ever been at a Remembrance Sunday service knows how it works. I'm staggered that so few seem to know. Last post, silence, reveille.

I was on the BLUT and the announcer said the one minute silence would start and finish on the referees whistle but I heard neither whistle, suspect by their reaction it was the same around me and nobody was sure if it had started for a while. Yes my hearing aid was on full.

He said the bugler would play The Last Post, then there'd be a minutes silence, then the bugler would play Reveille to signify the end of it. It's been the same for a number of years. So many fans getting it wrong was embarrassing.
 
The same set up with bugler followed by complete silence impeccably observed in the Cardiff game. Certainly not reacted to with fucking applause.
 
No kidding about it being confusing, us Blades struggled, but Wednesday fans only broke their silence 80 minutes into the game!
 
The Ceremony should start on the ref whislte, and the finish on the ref whistle

Firstly, it was a massive cock up by Sky. The OP is not referring to the outburst of clapping which quickly subsided. The bugling could not be heard at all on the telly. It was an odd crowd noise that drowned it out, but a generic crowd sound, like white noise. At first I thought "what the hell?" but then quickly realised it wasn't coming from in the stadium.
Sky need to make a bigger splash with their apology - everyone will think the people of Sheffield are disrespectful. If the crowd really did do that, it would probably make the news, so why should Sky get away with it? The club should say something.

Secondly, why does it have to be so complicated? I don't like the way everyone these days tries to outstage everyone else in rememberance tributes. It's not a rememberance ceremony, have a respectful minutes silence, with some representatives of the armed forces present, then get on with it. No one will be slightly confused and Sinlair and Sky won't be able to bugger anything up.
 
Has anyone got a clip from sky? Can't seem to find it anywhere and curious to know just what was shown/heard

As soon as the bugler started to play, Sky overdubbed it with looped soundfile crowd noise. As first I thought it must be some studio producer who was objecting to this supposed/assumed glorification of war and was being a cunt about it. Well, I hope it wasn't that anyway. It wasn't as though it was a fuck up as well, because the dubbed crowd noise ceased as soon as the bugler stopped, so someone consciously did it.

Needless to say, the impact and poignancy was totally lost. Well done, Sky Sports.

It shouldn’t really be necessary but they might as well put “Silence Please!” up in big flashing letters on the big screen.

Wouldn’t have helped with the Sky problem but would have avoided any confusion inside the ground.

As others have said the noise after the “Last Post” wasn’t deliberately disrespectful

However, when did we get so feckin political that we start doing minutes silences for victims in Gaza and Israel? It’s a football match where I go to escape the torments of the world around me, a couple of hours respite. How did this get sanctioned?

One non football event I wholeheartedly support is Remembrance Day. Without our forefathers we wouldn’t be at BDTBL.

The whole thing got a bit mixed up. We had the Tommy Hoyland tribute (which a lot of the entitled cunts in the away end totally ignored) followed by a round of applause. Then we had the announcement about Gaza and Israeli victims, which apparently was a Premier League wide thing with the Sir Bobby Charlton tribute awkwardly tacked on to it.
 
The catch all, cast of thousands, grief industry interlude at Bramall Lane on Saturday meant that Palestinian flags were raised in The Lane End, as a wreath was laid for Bobby Charlton and I quietly recalled my days in The Sheldon when Tommy Hoyland was Landlord.

I honestly thought we were doing some clapping for Bobby Charlton whilst his accolades were read out, and then we were going to get a proper minutes silence for him. But we just clapped then cracked on. Bit weird.

Funnily enough the away end rang some boos when Sinclair mentioned the Israel-Gaza war
 
On Saturday, the clumsy (to be generous) amalgamation of the various ‘tributes’ meant that the ‘moment of respect’ for the dead and bereaved in Israel/Gaza … ended up expressed in a minutes’ applause.

Not Gaz’s finest hour, to be fair.
 
Football is one of the last places we can lose ourselves. Silence in grounds is alien and uncalled for, the long standing tradition of Armistice Day aside.

The passing of football people - Maddy, Tommy, Bobby - should be marked in the same way we marked them in life. Loud. Raucous. Celebratory. That is the football way.

And, there should be no acknowledgement of un-football-related deaths, disasters or geo political events. Go to the vigil outside the Town Hall for that.

Commemorations after kick off - eg applaud in the fourth minute - are particularly misplaced. The games on. It's like a TV series - PA eulogy before the teams come out, silence or celebration as they line up, applause in some invented minute. Why must we keep returning to what we've already marked?

Football fans are now trying to outgrief each other. Evidence the criticisms on threads that - the other team's fans didn't grief right. Fans being called all the names under the sun for incorrect grief.

The current grief industry regulations dilute the message and true feelings.
 
Sadly, the minute’s applause has come about to accommodate numpties who can’t stand in solemn, respectful silence for one whole minute.
I don’t like it and never have, but I suppose for people like Bobby Charlton and Tommy Hoyland etc, who’ve had a full productive life, it does seem quite appropriate…
