Greetings. Another match report for those far flung or financially crippled and not able to attend.

With a tip of the hat to Deadbat ...

Bournemouth. Bournemouth? Fourth division, Ted McDougall, red and blacks, seaside town full of pensioners.

Quite what the flip they are doing vying for a promotion place with former Premier League outfit Sheffield United is anyone's guess. Oh. Eddie Howe. Nice guy. Got them playing football. You never know, season after next they could 'do a Southampton' and be in the Premiership.

Dream on.

We made the car journey over from frosty Gosport in time for us to get parked, settled and ready in the vicinity before kickoff. The website said there was effectively a home supporters bar and a home and away one, so why venture too far when its cold and you can now park in their nice big gravelpit of a carpark for a onner? Trouble is, me, Jnr Pommpey and Little Pommpey never counted on the magnanimousity and benevolence of AFC Bournemouth's groundstaff who bluntly told us to do one as it was 'Home Supporters Only' (points at A4 page blu-tacked to door) 'Oh', I said. 'Where do we get a beer, then?' He pointed at a pavillion in the middle distance across King's Park (think stretch of bobbly grass) which was packed, as we found out. I then asked two local youths where we could get a beer. They pointed vaguely up the street at a distant pub called imaginatively 'The Queens Park'. We trudged there. 'Home Supporters Only', the two Polish doormen explained, to which Jnr Pommpey said, 'That's a bit racist, isn't it?' They didn't catch the breeze of irony.

We were then directed into shitty Boscombe (think Heeley in the 80s) passing anouther 'Home Supporters Only' pub (are they Man United these wankers, or what, I mused) and found solace in a Wetherspoons called The Sir Percy Florence Shelley. Why not just call it The Town Full of Bellends? Anyway, we quaffed with other Bladesmen, one of which almost asked me for a light ... I think ... not sure because I haven't seen him since Reading some years back ... it was Brownie?

Anyway we then hiked the mile and a half back to the Jizzlobber Stadium, a nice, hastily-thrown up ground of three sides, the traditional away end missing and open to the brisk breeze blowing across the faces of some 1200-odd Bladesmen, hemmed into the end of one of the stands. Our seats were in line with the 18yd line on this open end, halfway up. In front of me (I discovered) was SUISA and BUVPs Dorset Blade and his missus, and at half time I bumped into Greenwich, still mad-as-a-fish and likeable as anything.

We played in white, Bournemouth included one Simon Francis who me and Jnr Pommpey last saw playing (with J Forte) in a Weymouth vs SUFC pre season some years ago. Back then he looked about ten.

Line up seemed to be 4-4-1-1 with Kitson as target and, surprisingly, Robson as his foil up front. Everything else was 'as is'.

First few minutes were pretty bog standard, but on three minutes a punt up the park found the head of Kitson who defected it round a defender and onto the foot of Robson on the right side of the penalty area. He was effectively clear on-goal but opted to send a lob over the keeper which from where we were sitting a million miles away, seemed to be heading over but dipped at the last minute and thudded off the top of the crossbar.

A bit like us earlier on in the season when Pompey struck the kop-end post earlier on at home, Bournemouth went 'shit!' and started to panic a bit. Then, United started to (get this, fellow forummers) play football - yes - and stroke the ball around a bit. Okay, gaps are still present i the midfield but we pressed Bournemouth up the pitch and kept them pinned forward. They seemed not really able to move past us without a (get this again ... ) tackle going in and someone with (oh ... yes!) putting their foot on the ball, looking up, and finding another red and white shirt. It looked so good!

One one of these forays, their left side defender was robbed of the ball by a swift attack by Murphy and suddenly he was past him, on goal and sidefooted it to the near post. It struck that post but, him being him, MURPHY pounced on the rebound and the confusion and sent the ball back into the net. Twenty minutes gone. One nil!

Course, we wanted two. Another attack saw Bournemouth under pressure and the ball came out to our own Rivellino ... Mcmahon swiftly sending it way over the crossbar into the crowd from about 25 yards.

Then Bouremouth had their own spell, exploiting the yawning gap that appears around the centre circle when we are on the defence. Their attack advanced and a ricocheted shot brought a very good save from George Long. More pressure saw Maguire coolly find Mcmahon with breathtaking aplomb when they seemed like scoring and we defended very credibly. Just before half time one of our players went down injured outside our box and Long punted it long and diagonal, hoping to find touch. Instead one of their players unsportsmanly retreieved it before it found the line and play carried on, much to the anger of both Maguire and Mcmahon, whom I though was going t take the top of his head off when the ball finally went dead.

Half time came, and we seemed comfortable.

Second half Bournemouth were set to come at us more and we settled into a pattern of play I saw late last year at Crawley which saw us defend deep, not venture out much and force the oppositioninto a predictable pattern of passing across the field to wingers to centre and find the head of our two central defenders. One worrying foray saw them shoot and the ricochetted shot pop up and trouble George Long but to be honest, apart from Mcmahon and Long winding up their irate fans, a spectacular feigning of Collins assaulting by one of their players, a disallowed goal by Flynn because Kitson fouled a defender when it was easier to score, we didn't win pretty in the second half, but we won anyway.

Long 7/10. Not high marks because although his handling was good and he pulled off one good save, he didn't have that much to do.

McMahon 7/10. Impressed by his workrate today and his professionalism. He showed good insight at times and grafted hard.

Maguire 9/10. Awesome. Cool on the ball, composed, moves well (with the turning circle of a bulk-freighter) and it seems that the opposition wingers are crossing the ball to him in the box. If we don't go up this season, he is gone.

Collins 8/10. Another good performance. Him and Maguire are the most impressive elemt of our team, and that is the secret to success.

Higginbotham 7/10. Another impressive ingredient to a lean defence. Experience and at-times level headedness shows up, even if he did get skinned a few times.

Murphy 7/10. Well taken goal, but seemed to vanish in the second half save for laying on the disallowed goal.

Doyle 6/10. 'workmanlike'. He does allow too much space and time for the opposition to get organised in midfield.

McDonald 7.5/10. The only player in our team who possesses any form of skill, but you all knew that. He does start attacks off and lays the ball into areas well.

Flynn 3/10. Guys. You are deluding yourself if you think Ryan Flynn is anything more than a FL1 squad player. I have heard the arguments on here, both for and against. Last time I saw him (at Crawley) I said he was a lightweight and this time he is exactly that. He is a winger. Wingers are meant to be fast, rangey and hungry to get the ball past the player to the by-line and across onto the heads of the advancing attack. Today he ran about like his fucking head was on fire, did not get forward enough and titted about when he got the ball. Don't make him this seasons - or next seasons Mongomery.

Robson 8.5/10. Well impressed with him. Looks a half a stone overweight to be honest, but he was a constant pest for the Bournemouth defence and midfield. Looked knackered when he went off.

Kitson 8/10. Aside from his only goal opportunity miss, He played well and got involved.

Subs

Poleon (unmarked) Looks good. Chased things down and took the pressure off a bit. Unlucky late on with a tricksy overhead to run onto.

Bournemouth: Didn't deserve anything out of the game. Niggly, bestowed with grandeur (and a nosebleed from the altitude) and expecting Uncle Eddie to get them past Sheffield United. Great expectations, indeed.

Ref: Decent. Despite their whinging bunch of wankers, they got away with murder. 'One-nil, to the referee' indeed.

Crowd: Us = 90 minutes of singing. Them = mardy arsed fucking bastards. Har-har. You lost. Deal with it. We are top of the league, you know.

Me, Jnr Pommpey and Little Pommpey will have to go to more away games, you know. That's twice we have seen them go top!

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion etc, but you have got to be absolutely kidding to give Robson 8.5 and Flynn 3. Robson had some nice touches but looked off the pace for much of the game, and an early balls-up about a minute after he hit the bar where he needlessly lost possession led to Long having to make an excellent save 1-on-1. He seemed to be left on the pitch today more in an attempt to raise his fitness than anything else - it was clear for about half an hour than he should have come off, looked exhausted.

I just cannot understand your mark for Flynn. Worked hard, made decent runs, unlucky to have a goal ruled out, and kept possession well. It was the sort of attitude he displayed that epitomised the performance.

Thanks for your report, good stuff. Its much better than the BBC one. Did you write notes as the match progressed?

Sorry Pompey but with the marks for these three I am doubting you went....or you watched a different game

Higginbotham was our best defender by far(out of an excellant performance for the back 4). Never missed a header.tackling excellant and good distribution. I would swap his mark for Harry's

Robson's experience showed at times but her ave the ball alot today and often lost the ball in possession. His movement was excellent though and dug in when he had to but no more than 6/10 for me.

Flynn...he was outstanding today. Breaking forward, linking up play. making runs between the full back and centre half on numerous occasions which Murphy and Kmac spotted and were trying to thread him through. He is not a winger but a wide midfield player(yes he there is a difference) and to say he wasn't getting forward enough is beyond belief as he was our most attacking midfielder today.Tracked back and defended and closed down. For me only second behind Higginbotham for MOM.

Very good report Pommpey but I too, can't agree with your rating of Flynn. The workrate of all of the outfield players today was superb. We never let their players settle or have too much time on the ball, we kept our shape and from where I was sat,we always looked dangerous on the break.
TBH, one nil flattered Bournemouth who could be playing until this time tomorrow and wouldn't score. I had a feeling that we could go there and do a job today and the only disappointing thing is that we didn't get the second goal we deserved.
Solid performance, tactics that worked a treat and awesome support equals a fuckin top day out in my book.

Just to echo the thoughts of LoughboroBlade Blackheath Blade and bartman while I agree with your report pommpey I definitely can't agree with your marks for Flynn and Robson. Robson's lack of fitness and mobility led to us being pinned back for most of the second half and his substitution was 20 mins late...typical Wilson.

At half time Eddie Howe pinpointed Higginbotham's lack of pace hence the change down their right. It was Flynn's covering which prevented that being a problem and I wonder how much his defensive work impacts in his attacking influence. He covers way more ground than anyone else in the team.

For me it would be Higginbotham 6, Robson 5 and Flynn 7.5.

Very entertaining report initiating a nice thread all round. Thanks pommpey.
Sounds like today was a classic away performance. The team is beginning to gel at the perfect time. Bringing in Robson was a masterstroke by Danny Wilson.

perceptive point
flynn 'is' the new montgomery..works hard.. puts in a shift blah blah woof woof.. wouldn't stand a knockabout in a school playground

I'm not going to start a new thread, these are a few of my points for today:
1. You should've started drinking in the cricketers, down the road from the ground about 10-15 mins walk. Good ale and a decent mix of blades and cherries.
2. You were harsh on Flynn. He isn't a fast winger who will beat a man when he gets the ball - I agree with Bartman, he is a wide midfielder. Part of a midfielder's job is to support defence and that is pretty much what he did and did well. I'd have given him a 7 for sheer work ethic. I'm not a massive Flynn fan and I do agree through that he does need to offer more when the ball is at his feet, this will have to improve if we go up.
3. I was disappointed with Robson. First time I have seen him and I expected a little more and throughout the 2nd half he was a passenger. Absolutely knackered and as a result we were playing with 10 men for a long time. You can see he has quality but his fitness is a major concern.
4. Kitson lead the line well - I've never seen a player win so many headers without having to jump. Sheer brute strength. However, there were times when he went out wide to win things but it left us with absolutely nothing in the middle.
5. The general overall performance was solid. However, when we had the chance to break (which happened several times in the second half) there was no one to pass to and from a promising position we had to pass backwards. This just consistently invited pressure.
6. I had the same conversation with some Bournemouth fans that I had at Crawley:
Fan: who is that number 5 at the back for you? He is massive and won everything.
Me: Harry Maguire. He's only 19.
*At this point, 2 other blokes butted in*
"NINETEEN??!! He won't be with you for much longer, he was a class above"
7. What a tosser their left back was for chasing that ball down in the first half when Long (albeit poorly) tried to kick it out so that Murphy could get treatment. Very poor sportsmanship.
8. Took an Arsenal supporting mate with me who thoroughly enjoyed it. Good to get a neutral's view: he said we played well and he was pleasantly surprised with the quality of football on show. He's already looking forward to the trip to Portsmouth in April. When we parted company in the evening the last thing I said to him was: "You're one of us now".
9. Loved the passion on show today. Evident at the final whistle between the players.
10. This is the day I am convinced we will not only go up but we will top this league. We have the necessary quality and with Forte yet to return and Poleon blending in there are more options to us. The defence is absolutely rock solid and the addition of Higginbotham adds a a calmness that rubs off on others - one thing to note is that he never shuts up.

Cheers Blades.

That would probably have been me who asked you for a light!

We got a couple in the Queens Head at 12 o'clock. The landlord saw us outside and invited us in provided I put my scarf away. He was a decent bloke, but we was there before the bouncers came on, then headed off to the Spoons.

I was surprised by Bournemouth being a bit of a shithole, well the bits I saw was.

Steady on, I'm getting giddy. The only thing we've won in my lifetime is the Div4 title, and that was no good as I was a mere squidge.

What have the Gods got in store for us this time? Flood? Famine? Pestilence?

Not only will we win the league, we'll do it by at least 6 points as well.

Great report, cheers.

Was very giddy at the full time whistle, looking forward to attending Boundary park next week!

I am a Flynn fan (and boy do I take some stick for it) but I thought he was a bit below par today. He wasn't dreadful, but he certainly wasn't a 3/10. I do wonder what some people expect from players.

And as has already been pointed out, he's a wide midfielder, not a winger. He gets instructions to defend as much as attack, not to fly down the wing at every opportunity. He gives us defensive solidity, which is especially handy when he's playing in front of a slow full-back (like yesterday).

To respond to replies:

Flynn. To be honest, we are playing 4-4-1-1. Even if we are playng 4-4-2, Flynn's role is not 'wide midfielder'. He has a specific rectangle where his role is most important, from, our 18 yard box right up to the opposition goal line, in from the touchline to the 18 yard boxes. That is how the 4-4-x system works. If he is a 'wide midfielder' then he is playing in the wrong team, using the wrong system. Unless we play 4--1-2-1-2 with a 'diamond' in the centre, his patch is narrowed into the 'wide midfielder' role, in which case, we have to forget attacking from the wings and start playing much closer, ball-to-feet wrok, stuff that I don't believe we have the capability to produce.

It's difficult to pin down exactly what our attacking style is. It's still frustratingly direct, and I believe this is because we lack the trust in Doyle to carry the ball forward and (from what I saw yesterday at times) lack of players' understanding to drop into space and receive. Flynn also has a tendency to bury himself behind opposition players instead of moving into space, he lacks basic ability to make effective runs and either receive or draw players with him to open up gaps. He's small, agile and not without skill but I feel his 'connective play' - the stuff where he understands we are on the attack so he needs to move quickly or even when he has the ball and needs to be more creative, is a real weak point in our attacking philosophy. Too many times he allowed their defender time to get the better of him - the one time in the second half where he tried to beat his man he made such a poor decision not benefitting from an early touch past him and telegraphed his intent so it was easy to block his run past. For us to capitalise on having one of the best penalty area poachers and headers of the ball in this division in Kitson, our style does have to lean toward wingplay and getting the ball round the back of the defence and into the area. The development of Flynn, McDonald and Murphy as our top goal providers must be given more priority in my opinion. McDonald has such ability and vision but lacks the output; Flynn, undoubtedly not without some talent needs to consolidate his role and we will just have to see what Wilson eventually does with Murphy.

Brownie - I KNEW it was you! Joe - my lad - said 'I recognised him straight away and knew he recognised us' (we were sat in the smokers area at the back of the Percy Thrower pub). Think it was Reading 2004 pissing up in the station the we all jumped into the taxi to the Madjeski where we all me last time (he was 14!)

Thanks for the responses - accept we differ in opinion regarding one particular player (and it is no different from Monty in seasons past). I want Flynn to do well and want him to be Gareth Bale. Nowt wrong with that, is there?

Top day out - and for the avoidance of doubt I did have a mate with me.

7.18 train to Basingstoke, change for Bournemouth, arrive just past midday.

Taxi to Goat and Tricycle. A couple of very decent pints and some food. A few Bournemouth fans in.

Taxi to Cricketers, Very enjoyable boozer, good mix of fans. Supping London Pride.

Walk to game. Long save was outstanding. Back four were magnificient, hard to differentiate between any opf them in terms of marks out of 10. 4 x 8.5 for me. Harry looks alot better after what I thought was a really poor run of games from him.

Thought Robson and Kitson were also excellent. Can see why they would frustrate home fans but not our problem. Doyle and Kmac did everything we could ask in terms of keeping it tight and holding the lead and the Jocks kept running and running.

Polo's overhead kick near our section was very strange but he is very lively.

Shame we didn't cause them more problems on the break but we didn't really need to such was the ease with which we kept them at bay.

And finally - one to annoy you all - I blame Long totally for a stupid, fancy Dan slice kick when he should have simply chucked the ball out to allow our player to receive treatment. No blame at all to the Bournemouth player. He is paid to play football, if he dopesn't want to kick it out then tough luck - have a go at long.

Walk back to station - 17.46 to Birmingham. 21.05 to Sheffield. Top stuff

We were a lot more up for it than them in the first half, and they looked as clueless as we did against Yeovil at the Lane. Second half they just couldn't find a way to open us up, we defended deep and the back four sweeped up everything.

Flynn worked very hard defensively and stopped Simon Francis from getting forward while also helping out with the winger. This meant Bournemouth's highly rated right hand side never got into the game and Higginbotham usually only had headers to challenge for, which he is tailor made for. The way Flynn helped protect Higginbotham is a bit similar to the way Chris Armstrong helped out David Unsworth when we were promoted to the Premiership. Having said that I'm not Flynn's biggest fan when it comes to attacking attributes, but with the early goal it was his work rate that was needed the most.

Robson is a bit clever at times and showed a couple of good touches, but he gave away possession even more than against Colchester. I'm surprised to see him receiving high praise for that performance. He needs to improve a lot to keep a starting role.

Completely agree. He's clearly got a decent footballing brain, but he's visibly lacking in fitness. I think he can probably be accommodated out wide, but in the middle, and particularly in the role he played behind Kitson to support the attack, his lack of pace was a hindrance on quite a few occasions Saturday.

That said, in the few minutes I saw Poleon play he seemed to be the exactly opposite to Robson - loads of pace, but no brain. But headless chicken running around was sort of what we needed at that stage of the game. Hopefully that wasn't representative of his talent.

Poleon didn't do a lot against Colchester either. It is too early to judge, but hope he's not another O'Halloran/Cofie.

If he keeps giving the ball away, as a matter of routine, for the next ten years, he'll not only retain a starting role, but achieve legendary status.

Fortunately for Robson (and us) DW knows a quality player and he will be picking the team.......

Like that alot Pinch - top posting.

I thought Barry did pretty well on Saturday and added some moments of class which we so badly need.

We really need Forte back though to work alongside Kitson and give Kmac/Bazza some options when in possession.
