James McAtee

Also, mentioned a few times in this thread, Doyle had to be a purchase. We want McAtee and can only get him on loan, so Doyle needed to be a buy. Hecky decided to save the money and put it towards “the very top of the pitch” and get Davies in midfield instead, who isn’t exactly an unknown.

I hope Davies plays really well as I fear he will be a scapegoat if not. People will see him as the reason Doyle isn’t with us.
Yep just my own wishful thinking, probably. I do think we'll get one of them on loan.

If we want to play last season's formation (two attacking behind a striker), then with Souza and Hamer in the middle (which I think is probably our strongest at the moment), any other central midfielder is probably backup to those two, or more likely someone to bring in off the bench if we're defending a lead. If that's the case, then Doyle would be a very expensive bench warmer and when Davies was playing regularly, his defensive stats were better than Doyle's last season, not to mention he was free. It's unfortunate as I reckon Doyle is a great player, but I just don't see how we can pay huge sums of money for a position that now we really don't need

The one thing with Davies is he wasn't free .will have picked up a massive signing on fee

Massively more than most and definitely more than your guess?

However, I just searched his tweets and couldn’t find a reference to the £1m, but I read it somewhere 🤷🏼‍♂️
Darren's bitch 😂

My interpretation of the Davies signing is that he was an opportunistic signing, not necessarily a Doyle replacement.

On the other hand, Davies will want to play. Otherwise he may as well have staid in Everton.

I definitely believe Doyle has the higher upside at this point. So if I had to choose, it'll be Doyle any day.

Can't we get City to "sell" Doyle to one of the "City group" teams, and then loan Doyle from them instead? Get McAtee from City. Job done. 2 loans. Creative.

Bend the rules!

I would still want United to try and bring in Doyle on a permanent deal even if McAtee was to come in on loan. Im thinking maybe this is something they would look at.

Possibly it's a case of they could get Doyle on loan tomorrow, but as we can only have one loan from any one PL club we are wanting McAtee as first option a d if that works out then we know it's a permanent deal for Doyle or nothing (and so does he at that point so he might be willing to compromise on any wages issue). I think this is what PH was driving at when he said we can get deals done now but we are wanting the best possible outcome at the end of the window.

yes think your right weasel signing tom davies put tommy doyle 2nd in our loan preference from city imo and mcatee is the bigger priority now i think but if pep doesnt let mcatee out again doyle will be the one

This is the problem though.

We have a budget.

Choice was more likely:

Get Doyle on loan but you then can't have McAtee ❌
Get Doyle permanently but then you don't have the money for Archer ❌
Get Doyle permanently. Get Archer, but then you can't have either Souza or Hamer ❌

We don't have an infinite money tree. There has to be some give and take and it looks like Doyle missed his chance so United had to move elsewhere.

Makes complete sense. It really looks like Doyle's only chance now is if a loan deal for McAtee falls through.

Do you think there's still enough funds available to buy Doyle and give him the contract he'll command?
I hope so Hecky has said he wants more signings so who knows.

From what I have seen we have a real fighting chance of staying in the league we need to back Hecky get McAtee and Doyle back at least and I think we will have a big chance.

If we signed both McAtee and Doyle, where do you see Doyle playing (bearing in mind the other players we've signed like Hamer, Souza and Archer)?

The only way I can see Doyle fitting in is next to Souza in the middle, with Hamer and McAtee playing attacking midfield behind a lone striker, but then that means only one of Archer or McBurnie. To be fair, I think that could be very good, with Souza covering and Doyle dictating play in a similar to to Norwood. But then again, why not play Archer or Traore in that advanced role on the right and let Hamer take that role in the middle if we've already paid for them?

Whether we can afford him or not (we apparently couldn't/wouldn't pay more than £8m for Akpom who eventually went for £12m, and we couldn't afford £18m for Archer without the relegation clause, so not sure where the money is coming from to sign someone who is likely to cost between £10m and £15m), it seems like a lot of money to spend on someone when we already have decent cover in the areas that would accommodate him.

I want both of these 2, people are saying where does Doyle fit in with the players we’ve signed but we need a squad with injuries and game situations. Bringing on Basham, Brooks, Hackford etc isn’t going to help our chances staying up. Doyle is the perfect long term Norwood replacement, McAtee is a brilliant outlet as we know. Some games we will try and counter teams and other games we might try and control it more. Both of these 2 give us options

From the team that played today Doyle would start for Norwood, McAtee for Traore, and Archer for Osula. We are still having to bring Basham on for cover for Norwood so we certainly need strengthening in this position.

We bid £10m for Archer without the relegation clause, so it's reasonable to expect that we have something left in the pot.

Personally would like to see us sign McAtee and Balde (LTB) on loan deals, use a little bit of budget to buy a player that can play LWB (maybe Jonny Otto?) and find someone to play LCM.
