Michael Tonge

Completely agree that he should do better in a passing side (so surprise at all that it hasn't worked at Stoke), but surely there are better options available. We could either do with some pace & trickery on the wings, or with a Doyle-esque solid player that's able to pass the ball competently while doing the defensive work required. Tonge would be a poor fit for both areas.

He's played 60 games in the 4 years since he left. Eleven goals in the last 8 seasons. Not for me, a good youngster in his first three seasons but never pushed on. We need to look at a good wide player who can cross a ball. And also we need cover for a month for Doyle

Need a replacement for Doyle, yesterday has been coming for him since the start of the season, he needs to sort his head out or fuck off for me. I think tonge could play his position but hopefully whitehorse will be fit soon

Seriously. Why do we always have to go backwards??

He couldnt do it for us before he left for Stoke. hes older and slower now. whats going to have changed?

Hes not exactly the quick & strong winger that people have been crying out for is he?

No. Wrong type of player, not a replacement for Quinn at all, more like KMac. Definitely cannot replace Doyle, I don't think I ever say Tonge make a tackle. Older, slower, not playing - Recipe for a waste of time.

you cant have seen him play much then

And why do we always have to think to formula?

If he played for us before, then he must be shit now.

If he never played for us, then there's a better chance of him playing well.

For what it's worth, I want another central midfielder AND a pacy winger.

I think we'd all agree he's no midfield battler, no?

for what its worth i thought that tongey was our most influential player in the premier league giving us a gap on the bottom 3 of about 12 points ,he did plenty of tackling in that period against good teams and one game in particular at home v fulham he had micheal brown in his back pocket but granted hes no nick montgomery

That's football, opinions. I thought he was putty in the tackle and his style is most similar to McDonald who is, I think, a far better player now - but not someone we can really afford expensive back up for. And if we're after a winger, I'd prefer some pace - Tongey had none.

Club's gone backwards (I know the playing style has improved) so it makes sense, no? If he potentially add some value what's the harm? I don't know what other options Wilson has available to him.

Yes, because if you want someone with more pace that the lightening quick Michael Tonge, you've got to be looking at those in the class of Ronaldo.

White lightening / Sunday drinking, eh?

I'd have to say no, Tonge is too much of a footballer for the Blades fans who for years have got used to the hoof it style, nah bring Monty back or better still just lump it over midfield.

I wouldn't have him back at the club if it was up to me. I like the lad and he was awesome when he first broke into the first team, but went backwards once browny left. He started playing really negative passes and wasn't creative at all. We ended up playing crab football with him in the side. It was so frustrating. And, as his defensive game is non exsistent, what's the point? It's hardly like he's been having much match practice to find the confidence and performances of his youth either. He's been at Stoke for godsake. Hoofball merchants. He might turn up with his neck in a brace!!!!! Seriously though, i'll always remember his goals against Liverpool in the League Cup semi at the Lane, so don't come back and spoil those memories. UTB

Those of us still supporting the blades are very happy with the current style of football. And we see how we currently play, and have valid opinions about what we need and don't need, though they're clearly just opinions.

And then there's those armchair types who give nothing, see nothing and experience nothing - but know the answer to everything.

Eh? We've played more passing football than any other team in League 1 since DW arrived. At times we've overdone the passing - but we can't be accused of hoofing it.

I see you have completely missed the sarcasm in my previous post. Or maybe you do crave for the Monty type of player

We do not need Tonge and we didn't really need Tonge when he was last here.

The way I see it is if (and its an if at this stage) he comes back then clearly Wilson will have a plan for fitting him into the team.

If we play the diamond formation in midfield, the width is (in theory at least) offered by the full backs, so pace is not a pre-requisite for playing on the left or right of that diamond.

What Tonge is, is the type of footballer that would fit well into our side. Generally composed, wont hoof it and will look to retain posession.

Summary:Might be a square peg in a square hole, so fine by me.

He was always a handy player. He fell foul of style of play in the latter days chiefly evidenced by his dip in form when Macca and Brownie left/retired and he was left being the only man on the pitch capable of putting his foot on the ball.

He also seemed to struggle at times with his confidence. I think dropping him back into an environment he knows and is comfortable with, at a level he's capable of pissing, and in a midfield that will suit him well then there's a decent chance it could click.

I'd have him back in a shot - and as he falls into the 'scored against the pigs' subcategory of ex SUFC players he should receive a welcome homecoming from all.

I'm surprised that nobody has raised the subject of Ian Ross.

For the record he's now playing for Boston United - currently mid-table in the Blue Square North league.

Oi - RedWhiteRev - welcome but that's my Avatar ! Guess I need to start posting more often.

Have to admit to being one of Tonge's biggest fans. Very underrated 'continuity' player who always makes himself available and rarely gives the ball away. I think the Wilson style would suit him very well - can't understand why he chose to go to Stoke, he was never going to fit into that type of football side. I'm sure he'd admit to not 'kicking on' from his early promise. I'd be very happy to see him given the chance to start again.
