... we can play better than last night and Boro can play worse?

We might be wanting to panic at some point but not yet, and don't throw the look at our fixtures card.
If we fluff it it's our fault, so lets not.

Let's be fair here Boro deserved the win no doubt about it.
I do think the way we played last night made Boro's performance look more impressive than it was, but I take nothing away from them either.

Yes Hecky is right goals change games and before they got their 1st we could have conceivably been 2 or maybe even 3-0 up with the chances.
After the 1st half I felt it was fairly even but we were surrendering possession far too cheaply and we needed to get a grip on that.
This is what was feeding Boro 1st half. Us giving up possession either under pressure or actually not under pressure and often the locations on the pitch that we did so.

2nd half Boro were the better team but they got a great and fortuitous start with Norwoods tackle more or less inch perfect for Archer to smash in.
After this I felt we tried to force the issue and Boro were slowing the game down, whilst also trying to catch on the break which they did to good effect.
The problems from the first half again was that we were giving away possession too cheaply.
At the time I felt the ref made a big mistake for their 3rd goal but watching it back, McAtee passes to Jebbison who then tries another pass and we lose it. Yeah I reckon some refs would have pulled that back but technically he let us play on for a few seconds then that was that.

The 3rd goal knocked the proverbial stuffing out of us, we did a bit of huffing, Jebbo could have scored a few times but that was about it. You could see the players looked a bit dejected and Boro looked elated. It's what happens sometimes.

For me it's not a night to forget, if I were the management and players it's a night to respond too. We need good performance and win ideally come Sat.
There were many areas not just giving up possession that need reactions too, too often the decision making going forward was just a bit to pot. Taking too many touches on edge of their area, trying to beat one man too many when a delivery would have been better and the midfield too easily got stretched and that again was large part down to needlessly losing the ball.

We shouldn't panic, or be too downbeat. Let be clear here that's our first defeat since November or in 10 games.
We need to take each game as it comes as it is still entirely in our hands, it doesn't matter what Boro do to a large extent and who knows Luton aren't out of the equation either if Boro are now in it.

Last night is one of those games that might be a bit of a character defining one.
It might galvanize us or it could give us a bit of a wobble short or longer term.

I am reassured because I had totally forgotten we have a game in hand. 🤦‍♂️

Michael Appleton the well known football sage said on EFL highlights summing up...........the next two games will tell us all we need to know whether Boro will catch them

We have
Millwall away
Watford home.

Boro have
QPR home
WBA away

I think the gap after those games will be 1 point plus we have a game in hand

No doubt about it we have tough matches for both and beyond this.

WBA ain't so easy though for Boro and we are forgetting what this league can be like.
QPR are in poor form but could easily go and get a win or draw on Sat, whether flukey or not.
Yeah you'd fancy Boro but still.

I met a Middlesborough fan on holiday a few years ago. After the game this was part of the text he sent me - the only part which refers to the game:-

"I thought after 10 mins we got into the game. That was as good as I have seen us."

Don't think we should lose heart. We did the same to Burnley. We needed to be on top of our game

Seems a lot like our game against Burnley where everything just clicked for us. We could have been 2 up after 15 minutes last night as well. The most worrying trend for us is that we are starting to be consistently wasteful in front of goal, which is fine against teams like Swansea but there’s plenty of teams in this division that, whilst limited in terms of quality, dont give up many chances.

I actually think Millwall might be a decent game for us to bounce back with. They will be really up for it meaning that we should be as well but they dont have that same quality that Millwall do. Those are they types of games that we’ve been at our best in this season.

We didn’t play well last night but we still had a shed load of chances all might click at Millwall and I expect nowt but a win

Created enough chances despite being quite poor especially in the middle of the park.

Let’s not fall into the narrative being put out by those who have in interest in trying to build up pressure on us, that somehow our upcoming fixtures are more difficult than Middlesbrough’s are.

Millwall are a side who rarely score more than 1 goal in a game, lost in midweek and drew their last home game. Watford, meanwhile, are currently 5 games without a win, which may well be 6 after their weekend fixture with WBA.

Middlesbrough meanwhile are supposedly going to roll WBA at the Hawthorns, where prior to last night’s draw with Blackburn, WBA had not conceded a single goal in the course of 7 consecutive home wins, since we beat them in October.

There’s an awful lot of hysterical nonsense being put about in the wake of a first defeat in 11, in a game which, with some better decision making in the final third, should have been done and dusted with us 3-0 up after 15 minutes.

Can we play better ?

Because we haven’t played better than that many times this year

Good job we don’t play Boro every week

Agree....anyone remember the 3-0 and cruising game away at Aston Villa.
Villa were terrible that might and totally outclassed. However they pull a goal back 5 minutes from time to score an unlikely consolation goal.
However incredibly on 90 minutes they score a 2nd goal to make it 3-2.
Then deep into injury with seconds to spare, they score again to make it 3-3.

That result was like a dagger in the heart. Apparently Henderson had a massive argument with some of the players in the dressing room.
The team unity and confidence could have fallen apart but we actually become stronger and better after than result.

We have plenty of experienced players, so I'm sure we'll react well to this setback.

Agree with all that you've posted.

BTW do you ever post short replies on here pal? 🤣🤣

Disagree we haven't played better than that many times this year.

2nd half we were possibly about as bad as we have been this season.

Have our games always been stellar performances... no but they have got the results.

I think the game was lost in the first half before they scored
We were One up, but our ball retention was awful, far to many 50/50 balls giving away possesion
We let them back into the game by constantly givng them the ball and the midfield not protectinng the defence.

For the1st goal [not for the first time] our left back was compleatly isolated with no one with in 20yds of him

Absolutely.

We had 2 warning shots (both over the bar) that this was an area of weakness which Middlesbrough were looking to exploit, before the attack that led to the 1st goal. It was glaring to the fans - being right in front of us South Stand Gangway C patrons - so it should have been obvious to the coaching staff. Nothing was done to plug the gap though.

There is a definite problem when Fleck and/or Doyle are not on the pitch, that nobody from the midfield or the strikers provides any cover in front of the left side of the defence. Burnley exploited for their goals and yesterday was like watching a re-run.

We play like that every week just that we dont play boro every week

We were very good for 15 minutes but it seems we can only play for 15 minutes

10 shots on target to their 5. We had the chances to make that game 5-3 like we did V Burnley.

No doubt Boro played well but let’s not forget we could’ve buried them.

Blessing in disguise at the right time. Just like us spanking Burnley was for them.

That’s the spirit

The amount of times we've had games in hand and they've come to nothing, you'd think we'd realise it's no guarantee of anything, a game in hand we can win draw or lose.

Despite us fans being in meltdown the players absolutely won't be. They'll know they're a good set of players that just had an off night & it came down to fine margins

Wouldn't say meltdown, we don't take our early chances, they gain momentum thinking they should be dead and gone.

They're overflowing with confidence and belief, we handed that to them last night, no wonder they're flying.

They will drop points though..

"We can play better" - Agreed, but we aren't doing. Against a soft Swansea team aside, we haven't played well for ages. The Boro and Rotherham matches are results finally matching the performances, nothing more.

We had them on the ropes but then allowed them back in the game. McAtee was allowing them to break down their righthand side too easily, there were loads of things that just didn't go right & I'm sure the analysts are going through it all with the players over the next few days.

On a positive until they scored 3rd goal I really felt like we were in it & created a fair bit. The problem was not tracking at the other end.

Despite our 2nd half display we were in it up till their 3rd.
Boro instantly started to slow play down when they went 2-1 and we were getting forward without creating too much clear.

But we did keep getting warnings at 2-1 of them on the break and eventually they paid off for them.

Yes, we were beaten by the better side on the night last night, and admittedly, played no where near our best.
But reading some of the tripe on this forum, from wannabe managers and pundits, makes me feel even worse than I did last night.
Come on now, we’re still in poll position.Boro have it all to do, and if we hold our nerve, we are more than capable of getting there.
Let’s get behind em, instead of all this slagging, from those who quite frankly don’t know better.
I’ve no worries about our away fans, getting behind us on Saturday, but worry about the home crowd these days.
Here’s a thought. When we’re not playing well, and passes start to go astray, do you really think it helps to go silent/slag off the team, or leave in droves when the third goes in.
It’s always the same at the Lane, it’s the team who have to lift and rouse the supporters.
Just for once next home game, let’s get behind em for 90 minutes, even when things aren’t going well.If the team still loses fair enough, but before pulling the knives out try and give some support first.
I’m always proud to be e a Blade, but it’s not the team who are re making me cringe, it’s a lot of our so called fellow Blades.
Go and support City, if you want it easy all the time. We’re Blades and you’re never gonna get that with this club.
Get behind em.We’re not as bad a people are making out, and Boro aren’t as good.It was a bad day at the office.
End of!

The game was on a knife edge at 2-1 and I felt like we were having a good go, Jebbo looked sharp albeit a bit rushed with his eagerness to score. If we can play like we did in spells of the game against the rest of the league will win more than we lose
