I'm of the same mind.

But then the ghost of Andy Taylor crops up in my mind as a lower league full back we thought was full of promise upon arrival...

Tranmere fans weren't too bothered about Taylor leaving. At the time they had another left back coming through who they seemed to think were better. It's not usual to see such bad reviews as the ones you've mentioned. Were there anyone who rated him at all?

I think they are slating him because he wouldn't sign a new contract. Seen some glowing reports of him.

So why did he lose his place in their team then? He's their 2nd choice full back. Even in our dire position we've got to aim higher than that.

Not getting at you Pedro but posts like this must give Monty lots of confidence. He seemed better than o.k. during our season in the Prem. As the porter said to George Best, "Where did it all go wrong? for Monty that is?"

I have never really slated Monty and up until last season I thought he did an OK job , he wasnt very good last season . My big problem with Monty is that we need to get rid of him because of the wages he is on, they are stifling our recruitment for next season.

he is no worse than Cresswell, Morgan and Quinn who are all paid to much for this level, Quinn being the only one of the four with any real worth.

Strange how they all think he is rubbish when he got young player of the year for them when he broke into the first team.

See what happens if he signs.

Point taken Pedro and thanks:)

Found this article, like Lowton he seems good going forward, likes to get involved in attacks. Walsall fans criticised him mainly for being too weak and poor defensively. I read in another article that he'd worked hard on his strength over the summer, so maybe that's something that have improved already. Fingers crossed!

DARRYL Westlake has revealed the secret behind his marauding forays forward – he used to be a striker.
The Walsall right-back is regularly in the thick of it when his side are attacking and is keen to add to the one senior goal he has to his name.
“When I started off I was a striker,” he said. “I love getting forward and creating chances for people and scoring goals.
“I used to score loads of goals for Beacon Colts and Barr Beacon when I was growing up in Great Barr.

“When I was at Barr Beacon we had a good team with a few players who played for Albion and Coventry. We won a few cups and scouts were watching us.”
Indeed Westlake was picked up by Wolves as a youngster and converted to right midfield.
When he was released the Saddlers came in and former head of youth Mick Halsall tried him at right-back.
“It was strange to move but I think I have done okay in that position.
“I got my first contract last season and was thrown straight into the team which was a big boost for me.
“I played about 20 games last season and have played 30 games this season so it has been a good two years for me.
“It was a big leap and when I was playing in front of 20,000 at Elland Road it was a dream come true.”

Like he says he started off as a striker.

So he will be still learning the defensive side of the game and at least he is still young enough to learn.

Id be worried if we signed some late 20 something who had done bugger all.

If you read the quotes Houso has found then this one seems to solve your strangeness perfectly.

"Shame about Westlake looked a good prospect when he first played for the 1st team but lost his way and never developed the way he should have. I guess he will join someone like Kidderminster where that's about his level."
I'm with Houso on this (which is extremely disturbing in itself), in that he sounds just like Andy Taylor and he was just dire.

Oh well at least he is bigger than Taylor.

a sky sports news journo, amongst others, is claiming this is a done deal. 3 year contract.

Sky Sports understands Sheffield United are poised to make Darryl Westlake their first permanent capture of the summer from Walsall on a three-year deal.
The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with the Blades and is set to join the South Yorkshire club after his Saddlers contract expired.
Due to Westlake's age, United will have to pay League One rivals Walsall

a compensation fee for his signature.
United manager Danny Wilson will view the highly-rated right-back as the ideal replacement for Matt Lowton, who departed Bramall Lane

for Aston Villa

earlier this month.
Westlake has spent three years with Walsall after beginning his senior career with the club, notching up over 70 first-team appearances.
Should he complete a move to United he would join new arrival John Cofie at the club after the youngster signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United

last week.

Who cares if he isn't good enough for Walsall......he's cheap & that's all that matters isn't it Kev?

We had a triallist tonight who looked very much like a man discussed on this thread ;) ;) who played a while second half... Did fairly well.

Why on earth are we looking at Luke Foster ? I know things are bad but Luke Foster FFS

nothing wrong with taking a look at someone - see if he can do a job for us or not. would rather see us looking at potential signings than do nothing at all. we are in Div 3 and need to cut our cloth accordingly!
look at the number fo players who have been poor for us and gone onto better things..Leon Britton is a classic example

that Britton was "poor" for us but is being talked about as an England player and had aa great season in the PL last year speaks volumes about the tactics involved at the time

I genuinely never thought he was poor for us. He just wasn't doing what the rest of the team expected. :)

Anyone see the game last night, anyone stand out?

Whitehouse got a good report from The Star:
"With United expected to rely heavily on home grown talent throughout the forthcoming League One campaign, Wilson will have been encouraged to see Elliott Whitehouse emerge as arguably the evening’s most accomplished performer.
Solid in the tackle and assured on the ball, the youngster did not look out of place in a midfield containing the likes of Nick Montgomery and Erik Tonne."

Is it a good or bad thing not to look out place alongside Monty?

Seems to me that Wilson is quietly going about filling the gaps that he (and most Blades) see in the squad. I'm looking forward to seeing how these players perform for Wilson.

How does this work then ?

"Although Westlake’s contract expired at the end of last season, Walsall are entitled to compensation because they offered him a fresh deal."

Since when do clubs get compensation when a player is out of contract ? Would we be entitled to compensation as and when Willo and KMac sign elsewhere ?
