It’s hard to see anyone who has a better year for the Blades this season than Paul Heckingbottom.

His numbers stack up. 93 points over a Calender year and we find ourselves 11 points clear in the automatic promotion slots.

His signings this year have been on the whole excellent and improved the squad no end. His biggest money signing was £3m on a relatively unknown Centre-Half from Sweden who has been a revelation and looks tailor made for us and the PL. The two lads on loan from Man City and progressing nicely and have improved us. Clark has shown why he has spent so long in the PL. The only dud has been Khadra so far.

He has resuscitated the United careers of several players. McBurnie looked like a busted flush but he has reined him in a bit, showed faith in him and built his confidence back up and before his injury looked a £20m striker. Norwoods form had dropped off a cliff but he got him playing and according to the metrics he is the best midfielder in the Championship and is the player who makes United tick. Max Lowe is another player who looked on his way out as well.

It’s clear that he has set off the standard of what he expects, that is hard work and discipline. We look like we have got a squad without any bad eggs in it and whoever comes in has got the right attitude and cracks on with it

Whenever he speaks to the press. He is very matter of fact, open and honest but doesn’t seem to over egg anything and doesn’t allow himself to be drawn in to saying anything that doesn’t need to be said.

Whilst there is some criticisms of Hecky, it is hard to say that he hasn’t been an overwhelming success so far and he is the right man at the right time for the Blades, and we are fortunate to have an up and coming manager who I think has the potential to become a top, top manager

Spot on 👍🏻

And I doubt many thought Khadra would be this far away from a regular starting place.

He's been brilliant ,we can all have a moan sometimes at substitutions and the odd team selection ,but overall nobody could have done a better job .he keeps it real .

Superb post, sums up my thoughts and sentiments entirely. He's done a superb job and we're lucky to have him. His hard work and meticulous attention to detail are paying off, and he's a real student of the game - or that's the impression I get, hearing him speak.

Late entry for my post of the year, this.

Doing a great job.. should have got the job full time after Chris went for me.. Still got a few Hecklers though.

I get so frustrated at his in game management but fair fucks his record over the last year is phenomenal and he obviously knows more than me at home stressing out

Disagree.....the club would have receive massive stick for choosing the cheap option.

We were desperate to return back to the PL, so needed to show ambition by going for "the best manager", with money not being any object.
Everyone agreed at the time that based on CV, then Jokanovic was the best manager we could have appointed.
We even backed Jokanovic by allowing him (at great expense) to bring in all his backroom staff from abroad.

It's ironic that "being ambitious " didn't work.
Then we return to the cheap option of letting the tried and tested in-house Hecky steady the boat and it worked really well reaching the play-offs.

Reminds me of when we were relegated under McCabe.
After Warnock's sacking McCabe was determined to bring in a big name manager with a top CV.
We tried to appoint ex England boss Graham Taylor as director of Football, then we went after Kenny Dalglish as manager
Finally we appointed the expensive dream team of Brian Robson (front man) and Brian Kidd (tactics man).

Showing ambition backfired badly, to be honest both Jokanovic and Robson had zero personality, so the fans never really took to either.
We went back to the cheap option appointing Blackwell to steady the ship and initially it worked really well again reaching the play-offs.

The moral of the story is "being ambitious doesn't guarantee success".

I,d like him to make substitutions earlier in the second half...to keep momentum and the opposition on the black foot..other than that...he,s doing a fantastic job.

Game management & injury record are the negatives (that could be mainly down to our medical team & facilities though).

The positives absolutely outweighs this though, his record has been unreal. The only think I would say is that this is a team that finished in the top 10 of the premiership 3 seasons ago, he’s got a good foundation to work on but he’s working with it incredibly well.

As we saw with Slav it’s not just about having good players

Oh absolutely, and he has fair criticism levelled at him on certain points - but I think they're maybe beyond the sentiments of this thread? I am a fan of Hecky but recognise and agree with those criticisms btw.

Definitely this, it was about appearances. Hecky wouldn't have received any patience in those circumstances, IMO. I'm also not sure he'd have got the deal for MGW over the line.

The circumstances in which he arrived were ideal, and let's be honest, the first gaffer post-CWAK was almost a throw away job, a poisoned challis after our most successful period in many, many years. I said at the time, it's the manager after the next manager that will get a better crack at it. Hecky's had that, but he's arguably exceeded our expectations with that chance and fair play to him.

Final point, the trajectories of Slav and Hecky's careers only further backs up Barney's bell curve theory. Slav had been successful, and had them settled for a cushty and well paid job abroad. Hecky was hungry to make a name for himself as a younger manager, and still is.

Yes, I had no problem with Slav, but wouldn't have had a problem with Hecky, but agree many would see it as a cheap option, and as Kozzy said, Slav got us MGW who probably wouldn't have come otherwise.

He's great. No airs and graces, no bullshit about "passion" etc etc....he's just a very good manager, who has made us into a very good team. I sometimes wish he'd make subs earlier in games than he tends to...but then what do I know? What he's doing is working. We're 11 points clear of the chasing pack at new year.

Can't wait to see him have a proper crack at the big time next season. He's earned it.

Heckys been a revelation, think he,s handling the players excellent,a real united unit. Long may it last. Potential new owners hopefully keep him too. Nothing can deny his impact the past 13 months.
