No probs. :)

As an offshoot from my post. That page was from the SUFC v. Bradford City programme from 4th April 1988. Bassett had come in, in the January and it sits in the period of the end of one era & the start of a new beautiful one.

We'd lost the previous match away at Boro 6-0. The away game before that we'd lost 5-0 to Leeds. We lost that match v. Bradford, lost to Birmingham (Withe scoring the winning goal), beat Plymouth, drew with WBA, lost to Reading & beat Huddersfield, before losing over 2 legs in the PO's to Bristol City from the league below. We finished the season 3rd from bottom on 46 points and minus 29 goals. WBA were 4th from bottom with 47 points & minus 19, and Birmingham 48 points and minus 26 goals. The two shellackings v. Leeds & Boro, the 1-0 away loss to Birmingham with our loan player scoring the winner and the 0-0 home draw v. WBA, did for us. We were poor that season, but 4 games dictated it. We also had the final indignity of losing to Bristol City.

Wally Downes picking up 2 reds in 9 appearances in that run in, I think.

Villa had won the European Cup & European Super Cup six years before.

Andy Kennedy scored the Birmingham winner. Withe scored twice at the Lane earlier that season.

Downes was sent off very early re Bradford. Something happened in that game I have never seen before or since: the ref blew for half time just before the ball entered our net - it was a shot from Stuart McCall. No goal. They still won 2-1 though. Bradford’s only League win at the Lane since 1934-5.

The WBA game was a disaster. Both teams were awful and we could not put the ball in the net. That sank us.

late 80s, when the electronic scoreboard was installed? I remember when it was there when I started going more in the early to mid 80s and seeing the old man, stand up, go through the numbers to get the right one and the groans when he walked past A.

Soon replaced my LATEST SCORE flashing on the scoreboard
Scond hand scoreboard from Darlington if I remember correctly 🤔

I bow to your superior memory/knowledge! :)

It think it's a mixture of a knackered memory & getting my loanees confused. Kennedy had been on loan to us from Birmingham hadn't he?

Went to both the Boro 6 0 and the Leeds 5 0

Can’t believe I put myself through that pain at 16 years old but that’s life as a Blade I suppose.

Wasn’t the Boro defeat the one where Brian Smith played in midfield. Now Brian was a fairly limited but fairly quick centre half but midfield player he certainly wasn’t

Yes, the season before. His only goal was that fabulous run and shot when we beat Blackburn 4-1.

This may not be the appropiate thread but on the subject of the electronic scoreboard, why can't it show the extra minutes beyond 45.00 at half time and beyond 90.00 as we approach full time?
Also, it would be really useful if the teams were displayed on the scoreboard at the start of each half.
