How on earth can you say that Palace, Wolves and Burnley weren't away ties? Were they at Bramall Lane? To say other wise is pedantic in the extreme. The point clearly lost despite trying to make it obvious is that away from Bramall Lane United have never won a play off game. They've also never scored in a play off final. Utter bilge. With only one goal in a FA Cup semi in recent years it looks like we are pretty spineless when facing the big games. Until they do nothing is going to change.

The sad thing is had we gone up automatically I think Wednesday would have made it through the play offs. Can't see the reverse happening at all.

Just for once, doubters, reign it in.

Just for once, players, don't let us down.

Its good to read we are back to doing what we do best, having a go between ourselves, this time its on line, at MK dons it was in the stand. Everyone has a valid right to an opinion on here, we dont have to agree with it, but lets at least respect the right to our own opinion. Its know use getting all angry on here, its an internet forum. Also I should point out, realistically there is little any supporters can do one way or another, we are spectators. Its down to Danny and the players available, lady luck, a neutral referee, I could go on.

My own view is we will not beat Stevenage. But I hope we do and go all the way. I have two season tickets for me and my lad and come what may we will be there for our first home game (no doubt on a Tuesday night).

For what it's worth, Danny Wilson was in the same pub as me last night. He exuded confidence, as you'd expect, but to get it from the man himself made me feel heaps better about our chances. If he gives those vibes to the players, they WILL believe.

Also, he was very pleasant generally.

I think what gets on people's nerves is when other fans tell them how they should feel.

There are a number of factors to consider when trying to predict the outcome of the play offs. If it was easy we'd all make a lot of money on betting. A lot of Blades' pessimism seems like a defense mechanism trying to prevent themselves from getting too disappointed again. Then a lot of Blades seem to react to this by being overly optimistic.

It'll be two tough games, then hopefully another one. I will be nervous and excited and don't think anyone can convince me that the outcome is completely unknown.

I always imagined managers / players / Refs to live on another planet when it comes football and how they are performing. The amount of times when they see a match differently to the rest of us or that they think the team / them self or a player is doing well. I've met NW a few times and always thought he's a great guy to be a round with yet many on here have different views. But i guess the main thing is that DW made you feel better regarding united's chances in the PO's

Certainly did - gave me a buzz, actually.

I'll be the same as most going to the matches - fearing the worst, but getting right behind them and hoping for the best. The worst thing is when the first misplaced pass is hit and half the crowd start to moan. When confidence is high amongst supporters, that same pass is greeted with applause for trying it, encouraging shouts to help the player get it right next time. It's got to make a difference, even though, as you said mpjacko, the players live on a different planet.

I smashed my hand on the overhanging structure just above my head at that horrible, impersonal Wembley when half time whistle went at Burnley play off final. I was so frustrated and feeling sorry for myself. Took weeks to feel better! What a twat I was but that was just a spontaneous reaction to another abysmal non-show from a Blades side at the biggest match of the season. It's not surprising people feel negative.

I just want any glimmers of hope to add up during the week so fans will give maximum support at the games. Not trying to convince anybody else though.

You post this as if when turning up to watch the match we are all moaning! Utter tosh. I am right behind the team, but for God's sake they have really let us down when it mattered haven't they? Simply put Wednesday are better than us. Whether they have better players or the manager is simply better I don't know but he has got them to perform exeptionally - and Wilson hasn't. Now to lose Ched was the hammer blow but shouldn't DW have had plan B? A Jordan Slew type forward who could score some goals brought in in case he got convicted (or was that Beattie)?

You answered your own questions, Ched thing was a hammer blow, plan B got injured and went back to Brighton. Plan C was out of necessity Porter, then Beattie. The team was set up to get the most from the talents of Evans and it was working very well, re-shaping the team, style and tactics at that late stage was always going to prove difficult. Had the S6 MASSIVE lost Madine for the last 5 I dare say this place wouldn't have heard a peep from you, MpJacko and the other closets. Never seen 90 points and 90+ goals not get promoted before, so not really sure where you lay the blame for that level of 'failure'.

What a complete load of crap!! Do you enjoy failure uh? The point is when the going gets tough the tough get going. If you like mediocrity go and follow Southend, they are obviously close to you.

When it mattered SU couldn't match Wednesday. So long as Wednesday beat us into 3rd place we just weren't good enough. End of. Dear boy if we couldn't live with Wednesday (as we clearly couldn't) it didn't matter if we go 100 points if they got 102 and Charlton 103. Being unfortunate isn't good enough. On this occassion neither were we.

And as I have probably been following the Blades longer than you and from more difficult locations than sarf Essex I don't need lectures from you. Clearly for fans of your ilk just seeing the team is enough. Personally I'd like them to win something for once, and 3 play off final defeats and no wins away from Bramall Lane in the competion hardly bodes well. However, one can live in hope.

I don't doubt he is a top feller, and for all the 'Agent Wilson' labels, actually 100% for United to succeed. Who wouldn't?

But for me I see our failings at higher levels. The upcoming court case was as prominent for us as Wednesday's slowly deflating challenge under Smegson. For them, Milandric was canny enough to give the ginger shit his P45 and drafted in one hell of a manger (at this level) with PL experience and a bucketload of contacts to enable players to be brought in and make the team function. And he was backed by Milandric doing this. I'd have loved to have believed that at one of the weekly/monthly board meetings, the possibility of us being without Evans at a vital period of the season would have been broached and a more significant acquisition made, rather than Brighton's out-of-favour gadjie or someone so green he'd be pressed playing on pitch number two at Graves Park on a Sunday afternoon. There are plenty of PL targets to aim for, and ones for whom the extra investment would have been seriously worth it. The Blackpool pairing we had made such a difference in that manner. I am disappointed we are now left with fuck all to make Stevenage work at - instead they must be relishing us going to their municipal shithole for a decent day running us ragged with their obviously threatening, well organised style of play. That puts so much pressure on us and let's face it, we respond dreadfully as we did against that very team a fortnight ago.

I am still taking painkillers regarding those cunts at S6 going up.

You are right in all you say. Dare I say though, that much as it is painful to accept, Wendy are now in a different league from us again metaphorically as well as literally. Ye,t we’ve got a great chance to go with them.
DW said that a new season starts on Friday. I (me, not DW) could easily punish myself by thinking, “We were 17 points ahead of Stevenage and now we’re going to cock it up!” No, it all starts on Friday, even Stephen, except we have the advantage of having the second leg at home. Remember that Forest semi-final?- I wouldn’t have missed that for the world (yeah, don’t remind me what came next).
Anyway, I’m going to stay positive.

It's quite simple really - because they were not away ties. To be an away tie they would have had to have been played at Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton and Burnley. For a tie to be away, there has to be a home side. Not being at Bramall Lane does not make it an away tie. All of those matches were played at neutral venues. The other side did not have home advantage, and by the same token we did not have away disadvantage.

So basically we cant win away or even score at a neutral venue!
Woof woof woof. I refuse to be a grumpy old man like you. Some good points in another opening thread but no solutions. You've been through it all before so what do you expect? Its took you all these years to vent? if your fed up with us and your present club - well make a positive move either within or elsewhere.

Why are the doubters steaming into the team at the critical moment? If i'd said to u, with 1 game to go, ud have a chance of auto promotion, would any of you not have taken that?

they've done well. they've played better football than we've seen for years and years. they've given everything. yes they missed out on a great chance late on to seal automatic, but give it a chance.

we are the second best team in the division. we finished miles ahead of the chasing pack. saying 'we always mess up in the playoffs' is like those commentators that say 'Sheffield United lost last time they played at Accrington Stanley..... in 1945.' it means nothing.

different players. different manager. a midfield that can tear any team in this league apart. we're going to Wembley, we're doing it the hard way, we're going up.

Football is for entertainment. its meant to be emotional and exciting. dont act like we have a divine right to win. get yourself to the game/s and lets do them all.

its not like you're going to give up on the Blades after all this time anyway, is it? :)
i take your point, but even after the `CHANGES`the outcome has remaind the same, only utd could amass a points total like that and not get promoted-only utd could house a sex pest and get caught out-only utd fans HAVE to put up with this shyte constantly-we are glutons to punishment, and to be honest with you its starting to wear a wee bit thin.

It's like a cat fight on here. Afraid some fans are positive and some negative. They all see things to suit there own views. Now stop moaning and get behind the boys friday and back at the lane, if they blow it, then whats new thats Blades for you. We'll all go away for the summer and come back in August thinking we'll go up (or go bust/relegated depending on views).

As I said we were a one man band Lost, Drawn, Drawn. without him 2 points from 9.

We have actually played 14 games without him this season, not just 3. We have only lost two of those, one of which was away at Everton in the League cup. We have only failed to score in one of those 14 games and have scored 26 in the other 13 games.

people seem to forget the start of the season. Theres a reason Porters not looking so hot atm, he's been warming the bench since October. He was in good form at start of season. Lets see what happens before writing seasons obituary

The last away play off defeat was 14 years ago.

It isn't defeat's that matter it is winning.

Good old Wigan tonight. Got goolies when it matters, (don't we know).

Put it another way, why does the pattern keep repeating itself? I don't know. I'd like to. Each time when it is a major game (semi-final/final) we just can't deliver unless playing at BL. I do remember the Ipswich game. That was incredible, I think bettered Forest as it was away and the ref played something like 8 or 9 minutes of injury time. Of course the away goals rule doesn't count anymore.

Don't patronise me you jumped up chuff. Makes no difference how long someone has been supporting a team (42 years and counting for me, Grandad!) or their location. No lecture from me, but definitely one from you, and you would see if you cared to read it, I was merely replying to your suggestions as to why we failed which were actually wrong. Beattie was never the stand-by for Evans, Hoskins was. So who's talking crap? Never said it mattered on the points total, merely pointing out it's never happened before. No teams has amassed that many points and goals and not been promoted (it would be us that gets it). Go on, tell me at the start of the season that you would've dismissed 90 points as not being good enough? We blew it in a court in Wales on a Friday afternoon. That not only removed the leading scorer, but psychologically affected the whole team. That is why we failed to secure 2nd place, end of! What happened after that was typical of SUFC.

And for what it's worth seeing the team has to be enough, because I'm already resigned to the fact that I'll never see us win owt. Would probably weep buckets if we ever won anything of note, but don't think we ever will. Always hope, but 40+ years of almost total failure, dampens the expectations somewhat. Doesn't cloud the reality of failure with blinding negativity though!

52 years and counting - first Semi Final 1961, last suicide attempt after Blackwell's Wembley fiasco.

I'm going Monday, and to Wembley if and when we win, so get your collective arses into gear.

Your attitude is as impressive as your alias.

I bet you love proper football; hate hoofing; drink real ale; play golf and listen to Miles Davis, Steely Dan and Billy Bragg.

Actually, any two of the above will suffice!

:)
