I'm up for it!

It won't happen!

But I'm still up for it!

I'm more confident (which obviously isn't very much) than if we'd gone to Exeter with it in our own hands in which case another legendary last day Blades cock up would have been assured.

Still plenty of scope for a cock up.

Imagine the scenario. Baking hot May 5th, like Lecester 1990.

Blades go 1-0 up early doors through Cressie. Wednesday are battering Wycombe, but haven`t got the breakthrough.

HT, and we are heading up.

Blades get a second, and all eyes turn to Hillsborough. Still 0-0.

70 mins gone, Exeter get a goal back. Nerves run through the terraces. News filters through that Wendy are 1-0 up.

80 mins gone, exeter are pressing. united look a shadow of the team that was there for most of the season.

87 mins gone, the terraces at (3/4 of) Exeter erupt as news of a Wycombe equaliser comes through on 5-live. Beevers is sent off for deliberate handball and Wycombe score the penalty.

93 mins gone, Wendy pressing for a winner that sees them up, but the referee blows for full time, they have drawn 1-1 and must hope Exeter do them a favour.

95 mins gone United clinging on to a win that will now see them up. Quinn takes the ball into the Exeter corner and sheilds the ball. The ref gives a free kick to Exeter for obstruction. The keeper launches it long, all of a sudden the Exeter striker has a 1 on 1, Maguire and Collins are 5 yards behind him. They won't catch him. Simondson closes him down, he shoots....

...I'll leave you to work out the rest...

Put me down for some of that!
Ball hits Simmo square between the eyes and ricochets all the way back over the Exeter keeper and in to seal promotion!!!!!

More likely given our luck...

Ball hits Simmo square between the eyes and ricochets back towards Maguire. With no time to react, the ball bounces off him and loops agonisingly towards goal. Lowton is running back to try and clear the ball, when it rebounds off the underside of the bar, hits Lowton smack in the face, and agonisingly trickles over the line...

Even more likely that when the ball hits the underside of the bar it bounces out and clear, but the ref gives a goal anyway! Like the Kyle Naughton own 'goal' at Hull. Which they then proceeded to replay on the big screen just to rub it in!

I no it won't happen but been dreaming all day what if? Strange things do happen but never in our favour. Just for once I'd like it to go our way .

In my history of watching United, I don`t think I've ever seen us "sneek" into the playoffs or "snatch" auto promotion, or "escape" relegation due to an unlikely set of Results on the final day. EDIT: except 1998

1990 - We win at Lecester, other results immaterial
1991 - Safe prior to end of season
1992 - Safe prior to end of season
1993 - Beat Chelsea 4-2 to stay up, were safe beforehand barring an unliklely set of results
1994 - We lost, Ipswich Drew, Everton Won, Southampton drew (I think)
1995 - out of the Playoffs by the last day
1996 - Kendall saves us, out of the playoffs by teh last day
1997 - qualified for playoffs by last day, never close to Auto promotion in run in
1998 - Lost our game, but birmingham only drawing meant we stayed in the PO place we had at the start of play
1999 - Mid table mediocrity
2000 - Mid table mediocrity
2001 - Mid table mediocrity
2002 - Mid table mediocrity
2003 - Qualified for Play-offs by last day, never close to Auto promotion in run in
2004 - Drew at Prerston, other results made our result immaterial
2005 - Lost to Wolves, other results made our result immaterial
2006 - Promoted before last day
2007 - We lose to Wigan, West Ham win at OT
2008 - We lose at Southampton, other results made our result immaterial
2009 - We draw at Crystal Palace, other results made our result immaterial
2010 - not in contention on last day
2011 - Relegated by last day
2012 - ???????

One correction - 1997 - we sealed our play off place in the 1-0 victory over Stoke at the Lane in our penulimate game.

Which is not an unlikely set of results on the last day of the season, is it???

My point is, barring 1998, other results tend not to go for us to allow us to benefit.

We either do the job in hand (1990, 1993), or we don`t and get relegated. We never seem to benefit from a last day turnaround.

Indeed, maybe it is time for an unlikely set of results to go in our favour..... (mind you, we only one unlikely result - Wednesday to fail to beat Wycombe - this is not a 1994 or 2007 situation!)

I'd settle for one unlikely result this time round...although arguably us winning at Exeter is an unlikely result given the thoughts of some on here

Of course, the probable outcome will be that Wednesday draw and we draw as well :-(

This pessimism is infectious...

Cheers Kenilworth!
I like your attitude Brampton, that pair of results will do me fine. Keep positive and we can make it happen. UTB!!

Well it's gotta come good for us sometime! Maybe the football gods are toying with the pigs for a change!

We can? Has Wilson picked me up front in place of Porter? If so, I best get some training done; I'll need the fitness and energy to get on the end of those balls into the box. Or maybe I'll just not bother.

1984 was probably the closest thing to an unlikely set of results working in our favour.

We lost our second last game of the season 3-1 at Bolton. If the internet had been readily available to all and football forums up and running in those days I think the mood would probably have been similar to now. That result left Hull just one point behind us with 3 games still to play.

Incredibly, they went to already relegated Port Vale that night and lost. However, they were still only one point behind with a game in hand.

On the last Saturday we beat Neport 2-0 and Hull could only manage a draw against Bristol Rovers. They now had to win their last game by 3 goals to go up. They only won by 2 and up we went on goals scored.

Plagiarist - especially the internet reference :)!

After Hull's defeat at Vale, I was strangely confident we would do it. Bristol Rovers still out an outside chance of promotion if they beat Hull and we lost to Newport, so I knew that would not be an easy game for Hull. And when Hull had to win their last by 3, I remember Howard Wilkinson helpfully telling the Star (as the smug already promoted Wednesday manager) that no team had won by 3 away that Saturday and he fully expected United to go up.

Still live in hope. Hope all going down there have a good day out regardless.

I didn't need to plagiarise as the events at the end of that season are burned into my memory banks as emotions swung one way and then the other, with hopes of promotion looking all but certain, then impossible, then possible again! I could also have added that we lost the game before the Bolton game - 2-1 at home to Wimbledon. But I can't remember how Hull got on that day. I know they didn't lose. Anyway, we lost 2 of our last 3 games and still went up with an unlikely sequence of results going our way. I didn't really think we stood a chance until Hull drew with Bristol Rovers (I think Hull were at home in that match as well?).

From what I remember Burnley had a very good team on paper, but had very much under performed that season. With the side they had, they should have got promoted with ease. I felt promotion was very much in the balance. Hull had to go for it and Burnley had nothing to play for except professional pride. I was on holiday in Tunisia when the match was played and spent much of the following morning desperately trying to find an english newspaper.

Aren't we the Hull City in this scenario of only needing 5pts form 3 games and blowing it?

Well I think we were making a pretty good job of blowing it ourselves and the likelihood of getting automatic promotion going into our last game was pretty similar now. The season is a bit different because all teams didn't play their final game on the same day in those days. But on that final saturday we neeeded to win and hope that Hull didn't.

We've managed to pull clear of Udders and MK over the last 6 weeks, it's just been unlucky that Wendy got a shot in the arm at the right time and have kept with us. I'm 100% sure that if they'd kept Smegson we'd have had it sewn up 3 weeks ago.

Whilst it's not over until 5pm Satdi (and by their own admission, they've been lucky in the last 2 games), the problem now is that we've hit a bit of a slump (compared to previous form) at the wrong time going into the play-offs and as has been said elsewhere, we looked a shadow of the team we have been against Stevenage. Mind sets change and maybe we'll be able to play without pressure on Satdi and get the flow back and I'd still be confident against any of the potential semi-finalists over 2 legs. The problem then is the one-off game, nuff said.

As we've seen to our cost though, anything can happen in the final game and Wendy will be more nervous than us now, it's theirs to lose and that's a different scenario than they've had for the last few weeks.

I feel more confident about winning a one off game rather than a two legged affair. More time for us to mess up in two legs!

But like you I haven't given up all hope of automatic promotion. Obviously it is very unlikely, but there is still a chink of hope. It is now Wednesday's to lose not our's, and as you say this could alter the mindset of both sides. Unlikely scenarios do sometimes happen on the final day and you never know, for once we could be the beneficiaries!
